Dead on Arrival, the many lives of Saturn+ - Yesterzine 67
Saturn + magazine launched with the best of intentions alongside a near identical sister magazine. But while that magazine still exists today, Saturn+ was dead after 2 issues. And also after 4. And also after 6. We'll unwind just what the bloody hell the publisher was playing at with some of the biggest crimes against magazine buyers in history. And yet, Saturn+ is not a total loss.
Meanwhile Sega bribe their Christmas customers with a special edition and scrabble to try and make up for one of their many, many mistakes but do they risk just making things worse?

I am very slowly getting on top of my Watch Later list and have reached the end of June, hence this super late comment which hardly anybody will see, but on the subject of short-running magazines, from my PS1 magazine collecting journey I can present to you the following: PlayStation Magic with 2 issues (October 1999-November 1999) and PlayStation Sports with a single issue (Summer 1999). There is basically zero information about either of these publications online. I don't have PlayStation Magic issue 1, but I do have issue 2. PlayStation Sports I do have, so can confirm that it was supposed to be a quarterly tome, but I'm 99.9% sure the planned Autumn 1999 issue never released. Of course, I could be wrong and these mags may have ran for longer, but I would be genuinely shocked if this was the case considering the research I've done over the years. There are a couple of other PS1 magazines that had single-digit runs, but the above are by far the most obscure, to the extent that PlayStation Magic issue 1 is a white whale of mine (because I'm a massive nerd). Great vid as always :)

Did you know that Virtua Fighter Remix was ready before the Saturn launch in Japan, but they still opted to launching the glitchy, uglier version anyways, just because they were SEGA? @@Yesterzine Very enjoyable episode BTW, I do like the Saturn, poor thing never stood a chance, but I liked it none the less. Never did own one, but I did for a brief while own the 3d/2d/sound card based around some of its chips for the PC. Its key selling feature being the Sega games that where ported to it. The Sega games where ok ports, and they did look a lot better than the regular PC ports, but it was not a good sound card, and it was a fecking awful 2d card. They did not include a hardware character generator, so text output was done purely in software, which meant in DOS and Linux displaying pages of text was slow and laggy, and basically unusable. Which given I was doing my comp sci degree at the time, and spent more time in Linux (with bits of DOS) doing work, than in win95 running games it had to go. I wish I have kept in now, as they sell for crazy money on eBay, thanks to it being the only way to run those versions of the games from Sega, and an LGR video bring it to everyone's attention.

It's always a sad state of affairs that they tried to make a magazine but couldn't find any of their staff actually willing to work on it to the point the ones that did wouldn't even put their names on it. They were simply fulfilling their obligation. They could have at least tried to hire people that have a genuine interest in the Saturn but it really does show even just a year after it was released in the UK it was already pretty much dead and even the writers could see it was a waste of time writing a magazine that probably wasn't selling.

Curious on your thoughts on Galaxy 2 given your comments on Galaxy 1, do you not count it? See it as an improvement? Didn't feel like playing it? The only other magazine I am aware of that reprinted the level of content we see in Saturn+ early on is a non-gaming example, namely an official magazine targeting new American viewers to the Matt Smith era of Doctor Who, called Doctor Who Insider. Panini released a best-of special for the magazine... after only four 44-page issues. Damn you yesterzine!! I have been trying to get my hands on a copy of issue 6 of Saturn+ for literally DECADES!! Also, it may well have reviewed Tomb Raider in issue 5, but it was VERY late to the Party - the cover date is december/january 1996/97 - Indeed I had completed the game within a month of it's launch and other magazines had started printing in-depth guides (I know, because at this point I had begun trying to complete the game with all the secrets!!). Indeed, the 'exclusive maps' were obviously done for the Powerstation special from Paragon (as all of the pictures are from the Playstation version of the game). same goes for the photoshoot I'd imagine, because as you correctly summarised, the publisher had obviously already given up on Saturn+ months before!! Very valid points for everything covered here gamewise, especially the Daytona coverage - pro-tip for Nights (besides buying a proper 3D pad) use boost more to keep your speed up!! Cheers anyway!! Seriously though - I really need issue 6!!

If you search for "Saturn Plus" on archive.org you'll find all but issue 3, so I can help there at least. I should have twigged that timing issue, and it really doesn't surprise me they half inched the existing guide. No wonder they took their names off the bloody thing.

You're good, Twenty six hundred is the accepted American pronunciation. The Brits lean towards "2-600" and mostly American commentators get really annoyed when you call it that. Not annoyed enough to stop saying "Zee-Ecks Spectrum" mind. I'm childish enough I lean into this stuff which is why in other videos the "Super Nintendo" is not only the "Snez" but also the "Super N Entertainment S", the "Snizzy Nizzy" and the "N16".

Betrayal at Krondor was absolutely freeware at the time, i distinctly remember Sierra themselves used to host the free download on their site (though researching this does reveal it was a bit of a mare to get running well as it was entirely unsupported by that point). I assume at some point it got cleaned up and put back on sale after the post-DOSBOX/GOG era made that an easy thing to manage again.

One little bit you missed in the hilariously complicated history of Commodore-Tramiel-ST-Amiga chaos is that the chap responsible for some of the particularly lovely things the Atari 8-bit micros could do, Jay Miner, was one of the lead designers of the Amiga. What an absolute mess that whole period was. I'm surprised the Atari enthusiast community held on in this country for as long as it did, but I think it came down to stubbornness and a sense of "well, if Atari aren't going to show these machines some love, we certainly will" -- the longest-running mag for the 8-bits and ST didn't finally fold until *1998*, although by that point it had reverted to A5-size fanzine style after a period of being a glossy publication on newsstands in the ST's heyday. Still, 1998 was well into PlayStation era, and they were *still* covering new releases for the 8-bit machines at that point!

Even though the sequence of events explain it, launching a new C64 mag in 1992 is still insane to me, sitting between the releases of Sonic and Street Fighter 2 on SNES. Still, the rabbit hole of Legally Distinct Power Magazine was fascinating!

ARGH! I found it! I knew I wasn't making it up! Game Mania. Issue 1 printed on newsprint in a tabloid format, just as I remembered. Turns out it was multiformat, not an Amiga mag, but otherwise it's 100% the same magazine I remember. Unfortunately it appears it did continue beyond that issue (looks like it made it to at least issue 5, and as promised did switch to a 'proper' magazine format) so it isn't the mythical 'one and done' mag I thought. But my god, it's good to know I wasn't completely mad. If anyone's interested, a copy of issue 1 is on eBay for £30 right now. It's not worth that but the seller has helpefully scanned almost every page so you can actually read it for yourself. It is absolutely extraordinary and very much betrays its origins as a mag written by two kids with a rich dad who paid for them to live their dreams of being games journalists. The channel James Talks Games Mags even did a video on it a few months ago, I now discover.

@@heyhonpuds No it wasn't that, I do remember that though; an absolutely bizarre rebranding, literally removing any fun or any of the things that made Arcade stand out. That only lasted about 4 or 5 issues as well. I did wonder at the time whether it was done because the publishers worked out that producing four issues of the cheapest, nastiest mag possible to send to Arcade subscribers would cost them less than refunding them for their unfulfilled subscriptions. The only real memory I have of it was that it was where I read that the Dreamcast was being discontinued.
