Ah, Magical Puzzle Popils. Probably my most played Game Gear game. No idea why 6-year old me had any interest in giving it a chance based on the box art and conceit but I'm glad I did. I can confirm the map creator is just as good as you probably think it is. I'm glad to see somebody discovering it all these years later. Happy 50th issue!
I'll level. I didn't realise that either. Not when I did the Tiertex series. Not when I'd worked Tiertex into the video introduction. I discovered it exactly the way I did in the video. Like I say, what's the point in writing fiction...

Happy 50! =) My only experience with Outrun outside the Yakuza games were on the Game Gear and the nostalgia is so strong that the arcade version is the exact same in my head. Wonder how it would be if I played the GG version now! xD
Props for mentioning POPILS (I pronounce it POP-ILS). I'm the guy that discovered the final hidden stage, amongst other stuff, documented on TCRF. Oh, and the Japanese manual has extra levels from the creators that you can enter into the editor. Cheers!
My best theory is it's related to the game not actually being "Licenced by Sega Enterprises Ltd", because it feels like an own goal. Like how many people in that WH Smith mistook it for a SNES game?
@@Yesterzine True, but, Accolade made the Bubsy games too and those were in plastic boxes. BTW Your Master System Tiertex video... Did you see the footage of The Godfather game they did that I put on Twitter a few weeks ago?
That's why I wonder, those were licenced, as was Combat Cars. I've seen some footage from it so chances are it was via you. Actually looks fairly promising I'd say.

I'm debating a "50 years of YZ" special :D The James footage is actually old, it's from episode 17 where there was a feature on games marketing. He was kind enough to let me reuse it.
Brilliant video this one, an excellent 50th for sure. At first I thought you were being a bit hard on the Mega Drive version of OutRun, but, yeah, actually, you're on the nail.
The thing is It's fine. But a Sega arcade port to its fancy new console it's trying to make you buy should not be "Just fine". Graphically at least they made exactly the same mistake with Daytona USA.
I rented that version of Test Drive 2 back in the day (possibly more than once, it was one of the cheaper options in Tolworth Blockbuster!) - one thing I liked at the time is unlike most MegaDrive racers it was happy to let you drive around without any of this "time limit" or "you have to race the loon in the Porsche who's tearing about upsetting the police". Yes, I was that kid who liked picking up a racing game and just going for an ordinary Sunday drive. I wonder if the lack of expansion data was trying to keep the cartridge ROM size down... a lot of these driving game ports seem to suffer from attempts to get them done on the cheap.
That's a good theory actually. I mention it only in the secret note in the video description but the game is actually an unlicenced release. I wonder if there was a limit to the size of cart they COULD make.

Gotta check out Popils. I've been doing some deep diving in the library but something named Popils is probably going to be looked over thinking it's something stupid and cutesy.

If you find yourself in emulator world it's worth trying the first few levels to see how it fits together but yeah as a whole package it's not gonna convert you. Did you notice the sneaky inclusion of Choplifter 3 btw? :)

It's a complete coincidence as well. I had no idea it was Tiertex when I picked the magazine, they're not named in the pages.

Chances are the GG one is literally that SMS one down-resolutioned and up-coloured a bit so your experience should be very similar.

Popils is an absolutely lovely game that I wasted many a happy hour on just messing around with the level editor.

Love the look of Popils and its style but I do not get on well with puzzle games so I know I'd lose interest on it
