    Another belting issue, Dudley. At least the bored tomb raider lady had done her hair in a nice plait. Knights into Dreams does look ace!

      Another commentator pointed out the guide and the model might be reused from one of their playstation mags, which would explain a hair budget :D

      @@Yesterzine That would make perfect sense. Also the guide misses a pickup on the first level.
      I remember I had a walkthrough for TR1 and 2. Nell McAndrew was the cover model. She also seemed to have had an allergic reaction to something that day or something.

    Nice Video. Just one thing about Mario Games being Lanch Tiles. Nethier Sunshine, Odyssey and Galaxy (one of the best games ever made) where Lanch Tiles. The Gamecube Lanched with Luigi's Mansion (Sort of a Mario game, Maybe?) and both the Wii and Switch Lanched with Zelda Tiles.
    Also, Impact Racing getting a higher Score than Command and Conquer seems insane to me.

    • @Yesterzine
      @Yesterzine  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sunshine was in the UK, taking the launch window as the traditional 6 months but you absolutely have me on the other 2. I can use Wii Sports as a defence for Galaxy but you'd really think I'd have noticed waiting for Odyssey given that's when I bought my Switch and I didn't get it dead on launch.

    Did you know that Virtua Fighter Remix was ready before the Saturn launch in Japan, but they still opted to launching the glitchy, uglier version anyways, just because they were SEGA? I didn't believe it myself at first, but it's true, SEGA's leaked docs and even easier to find, the disc files dates show this.

    • @Yesterzine
      @Yesterzine  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm not surprised, the right thing to do would have been to junk the "beta" (as I understand it there's not the gameplay differences of Daytona) but you need to convince management to "throw away" that money.

    Another belter of an episode, Dudley! Saturn Plus is another one I didn't know was a thing until this ep. I can't think of a more tragic mag tho with its speedrunning the decline of a magazine phase. Poor thing.

    Damn you yesterzine!! I have been trying to get my hands on a copy of issue 6 of Saturn+ for literally DECADES!! Also, it may well have reviewed Tomb Raider in issue 5, but it was VERY late to the Party - the cover date is december/january 1996/97 - Indeed I had completed the game within a month of it's launch and other magazines had started printing in-depth guides (I know, because at this point I had begun trying to complete the game with all the secrets!!). Indeed, the 'exclusive maps' were obviously done for the Powerstation special from Paragon (as all of the pictures are from the Playstation version of the game). same goes for the photoshoot I'd imagine, because as you correctly summarised, the publisher had obviously already given up on Saturn+ months before!!
    Very valid points for everything covered here gamewise, especially the Daytona coverage - pro-tip for Nights (besides buying a proper 3D pad) use boost more to keep your speed up!!
    Cheers anyway!! Seriously though - I really need issue 6!!

      If you search for "Saturn Plus" on archive.org you'll find all but issue 3, so I can help there at least. I should have twigged that timing issue, and it really doesn't surprise me they half inched the existing guide. No wonder they took their names off the bloody thing.

    Excellent stuff. Very exciting to see the mythical post-issue 2 era I had no idea existed. Breathtakingly cynical stuff, I had completely forgotten that issue 2 reprinted all the reviews from issue 1 and changed the Johnny Bazookatone score though now that you've reminded me I think I was dimly aware that that had happened. I mean, I had both issues so I guess I must have been.

    It's always a sad state of affairs that they tried to make a magazine but couldn't find any of their staff actually willing to work on it to the point the ones that did wouldn't even put their names on it. They were simply fulfilling their obligation. They could have at least tried to hire people that have a genuine interest in the Saturn but it really does show even just a year after it was released in the UK it was already pretty much dead and even the writers could see it was a waste of time writing a magazine that probably wasn't selling.

    • @Yesterzine
      @Yesterzine  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The Saturn died quick sure but it definitely didn't die as quick as Paragon seemed to think. I'm sure the sales didn't help but they seem to have been half arsing this one at corporate level right from the start and I wonder if there's a way to blame Dave Perry somehow.

      I got some of my dates wrong but the DS wasn't part of the list not being a home console. I actually disagree with both yours, the Wii U DID launch with New Super Mario Bros U and in the UK, always the reference for this show unless stated, Sunshine was a launch window game albeit not day 1.

    As a (driving game) casual I always found Saturn Vanilla Daytona a solid 15 minutes of fun every time, especially with the Arcade Racer. I wasn't even aware of the remix; which seems less surprising as it's not available to buy on the X or PS3 stores, and CEX and eBay seem to have never heard of it either. Any idea how one gets to play it (and don't say Steam; I'm running a 386 here... ;-)?

    14:45 Tempted to start adding letters to my name to commemorate things in my life now. After years of having to tell people "It's not Phillip" I can say instead "it's Phillllip!"
    Curious on your thoughts on Galaxy 2 given your comments on Galaxy 1, do you not count it? See it as an improvement? Didn't feel like playing it?
    The only other magazine I am aware of that reprinted the level of content we see in Saturn+ early on is a non-gaming example, namely an official magazine targeting new American viewers to the Matt Smith era of Doctor Who, called Doctor Who Insider. Panini released a best-of special for the magazine... after only four 44-page issues. Like Saturn+ it was not long for this world, being cancelled after issue 9, and an attempted relaunch the following year only generated a single Winter 2012 special that was essentially just #10.

      @@Yesterzine Very enjoyable episode BTW, I do like the Saturn, poor thing never stood a chance, but I liked it none the less. Never did own one, but I did for a brief while own the 3d/2d/sound card based around some of its chips for the PC. Its key selling feature being the Sega games that where ported to it. The Sega games where ok ports, and they did look a lot better than the regular PC ports, but it was not a good sound card, and it was a fecking awful 2d card. They did not include a hardware character generator, so text output was done purely in software, which meant in DOS and Linux displaying pages of text was slow and laggy, and basically unusable. Which given I was doing my comp sci degree at the time, and spent more time in Linux (with bits of DOS) doing work, than in win95 running games it had to go. I wish I have kept in now, as they sell for crazy money on eBay, thanks to it being the only way to run those versions of the games from Sega, and an LGR video bring it to everyone's attention.

      Yeah it's a lovely machine and I stand by the early lineup being mostly better. Just of course as it didn't get the sales, the 3rd parties went away. I frequently have the Saturn plugged in but haven't had PS1 hardware in operation for some time.

    • @RetroBytesUK
      @RetroBytesUK 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Yesterzine There are so many emulation options for PS1 that just work flawlessly, so most the PS1 things I play (and there are not a lot now) I just run on the retropi I have plugged into my TV. The only retro console I have plugged into my TV all the time is my CD32, everything else to gets plugged in for a bit, then packed away.
