New Master System Games for 2024 - The SMS Power Coding Competition

- It's the most wonderful time of the year and this year the annual SMSPower coding competition has spawned 13 new games for the Sega Master System of a near universally commercial potential quality.

Note since this was originally put together many of the small bugs and issues have of course been fixed. most notably for me in the video.
- Sushi Nights doesn't crash.
- Land on my Base now has fuel.
- Maxim's VGM Player now supports the FM chip
- Goblin Kart Rescue now has sound and a bunch of bugfixes/UI improvements.

You made it very clear and it looks like you enjoyed it :) To answer yours questions : Yes, this is my first competition and there is 10 chapters of 10 board each and the environments changes every 2 chapters ( Dungeon / Cave / Palace / Hell / Cemetary ). Superb. I absolutely mean it, if you could travel back in time to 1990 and stick this in a box, you're getting 80%+ reviews easy. I'll be in line for a boxed copy if you can get one released.

There's some absolutely amazing games in this list. The SMS future looks BRIGHT!
Genuinely I can see myself owning 5 boxed games in a year from these.
That version of bombjack looks amazing. It moves beautifully and there is no flicker. It would almost look like the arcade game in a screenshot and puts the 16 bit versions to shame.
Actually that's a point, there's virtually no flicker in almost anything this year but especially that. I've said it a lot and I'll say it again but if you'd bought that in 1990 you would have been pleased which is some going for a bunch of amateurs mostly single developing this stuff.
What a wonderful selection from some wonderful people for a wonderful console!

Superb work, and if Goblin Kart hadn't had such good updates you'd have beaten it. I'm actually quite pleased how accurate I was :)

Excellent video Dudley. You've covered everything brilliantly again this year, mate. Really enjoyed that. I think you've done all of the entries justice. And despite 1 or 2 not being complete I think it's a really strong competition again this year. I'm still undecided on what will be getting my vote, but I think they are all quite strong contenders from 5th place up. I have really been enjoying goblin kart so far. Still need to try 1 or 2 of the others.

Yeah, Goblin Kart as a complete game would be one of several that could make it a 3 way fight :)
The biggest upgrade with maxims vgm player is that it now supports the FM chip, which is absolutely huge as it means that FM music (and FM + PSG) music made in furnace tracker can now be enjoyed on real hardware ^_^
Previously the only way was to make music using the archaic MSX tracker moonblaster in an emulator which was not only filled with limitations but INCREDIBLY clunky to use with it being 90's software running on an 8-bit machine with no mouse...

It seems like it could have been a decent console. In the USA as a kid in the 1980's we only knew of the NES, I think once or twice I saw someone with an Atari 2600 or Master System, but it was rare when you saw them.
Here is the thing with any system. All you need is some killer games. Once you have the games, then the system becomes something.
The problem is, where is the Master System's answer to Super Mario Bros 3. If it had games that could compete with Mario 3 then it would have been placed more on the map.
Yeah, did not do well in the US, your last game was a half-arsed release of Sonic 1 in 1991. In the UK Sega supported it right up to 1995, 96 in Europe and 98 in Brazil for new licenced games.
In all those territories it kicked the NES's ass just like it was the other way round for you.
Here's my favourite fact, The Master System got a Virtua Fighter game AFTER the last one for Saturn :D

Yeah, I debated where I put that because it's hard to think it could be THAT much better, it's just... 8-bit pinball has some rather inherent limits. And of course it's got Bomb Jack hidden built in. (Set a high score on all tables or use the Konami code I believe)

I'm a bit disappointed with the output this year as 2023 had a lot of great entries. Mai Nurse looks like it will be fun at least.

Hmm I see it on my iPad, thanks, will investigate. The auto generated version is still there if the corruption is disruptive.
Had a look, it's nothing in my file and it's fine when initially uploaded to youtube but youtube then invents these. I don't think there's anything I can do short of stepping through every subtitle manually, and even then it might put it back. Will keep an eye on future videos and I've asked other video makers if it's happening to them.
The computer is the SC-3000, not SG-3000.

I can appreciate a competent reimplementation but clones don't deserve to win a game competition as much as an original game. Naarshakta had to think harder and use his/her brain more to come up with an original game design that could easily have been a disaster...Lunoka didn't need to put anything on the line or risk anything because the game design was already finished, so it's just not as exceptional. Naarshakta gets the higher mark for daring to do something original and it wasn't even a design we've seen before in many places. I would feel so disappointed if I worked hard on an original game but then lost to someone with a clone, that's just cruel.
Yeah I went backwards and forwards on it but settled on which I just had a bit more fun with. Naarshakta is in these comments and seems ok with it. You make a good point and that game is indeed a tremendous achievement. Eruiz has won the competition with both clones and original games.
That said, in the actual competition, your vote counts for exactly the same as mine, so there's one good other place to make this point.
Thank you for the comment ! But don't worry, I made a game because I liked it and I will continue too. The competition is just here to make my game being noticed and played by people who ( I hope ) will enjoy it. There are other strong competitors this year and if I don't win, it's not a big deal ^^^. I am still gonna release my game on a physical version not matter what. TBH, Crazy Pinball is a real coding performance from my perspective :)

Yeah, with this many things I decided I had to concentrate on the games, it's already 15 minutes longer a video than last year!
It's a wonderful utility though, the little hands made me laugh out loud first time I played GAW.
It's a really useful too nonetheless, although one thing that bugs me with it slightly is that when listening to FM music the hands will keep switching between big and small because of the sprite limit so looks a bit glitchy. Maybe it would be possible to have the hands default to small if it detects FM sound? Honestly though this is just a really small nitpick of something amazing :)
