Thanks for the shout out. My 9 year old daughter is now very impressed with me. The C64 does have one really great arcade racing game. Elite's conversion of Buggy Boy is terrifically playable.
Yeah, I actually mentioned that one in the video that originally covered those Chase HQs but pretended I didn't here for dramatic effect :) In that case, it's the other versions that are bad.
I would also add the c64 conversion of Power Drift is the best home computer version by far, Super Cycle by Epyx is also excellent, and there's Pitstop & Pitstop 2
Wow WEC Le Mans actually colours the player's car 😮❤ thats so rare but seems like it would be simple given the rest of the screen is a single colour. Fantastic stuff.
While not technically a racer, Turbocharge is an example of what somebody competent can do. Ditto for Buggy Boy and Power Drift. Now, two of those games were written by Chris Butler, so there is that...
Buggy Boy I've seen before, it actually gets a mention as a counterpoint in the video that first featured Chase HQ but Power Drift is an interesting one. Chances are the best version of that will always be on 3DS mind.
Even though the sequence of events explain it, launching a new C64 mag in 1992 is still insane to me, sitting between the releases of Sonic and Street Fighter 2 on SNES. Still, the rabbit hole of Legally Distinct Power Magazine was fascinating!
Then again, as another commenter brought up, 1993 saw NES and SMS mags, both of which we have seen on the channel. Certainly brave, especially as an indie, once I was pointed at it we had to see it. And indeed next month, another in that discussion that's a lot more in your area.
I know its not c64 but on the Speccy my fave driving game is Rubinho Cucaracho - im not a big driving game fan but played the entire campaign start to finish when i tried it. Its just such great fun. Anyone who hasnt played it, really needs to! Is Vita retro yet? As you mentioned sprite scaling - Horizon Chase is FANTASTIC. Really, really intense with the old style sprite scaling design and great music to draw you in.
I found out yesterday the Vita can emulate all 32x games perfectly and full speed 😮❤ My Android cant run some of them but the Dynarec makes them perfect on Vita. Been enjoying Tempo. Great game
ARGH! I found it! I knew I wasn't making it up! Game Mania. Issue 1 printed on newsprint in a tabloid format, just as I remembered. Turns out it was multiformat, not an Amiga mag, but otherwise it's 100% the same magazine I remember. Unfortunately it appears it did continue beyond that issue (looks like it made it to at least issue 5, and as promised did switch to a 'proper' magazine format) so it isn't the mythical 'one and done' mag I thought. But my god, it's good to know I wasn't completely mad. If anyone's interested, a copy of issue 1 is on eBay for £30 right now. It's not worth that but the seller has helpefully scanned almost every page so you can actually read it for yourself. It is absolutely extraordinary and very much betrays its origins as a mag written by two kids with a rich dad who paid for them to live their dreams of being games journalists. The channel James Talks Games Mags even did a video on it a few months ago, I now discover.
Wasn't it what they did next when Arcade mag shut its doors after 24 issues? Arcade was great, dunno why they thought changing it like that was a good idea.
@@heyhonpuds No it wasn't that, I do remember that though; an absolutely bizarre rebranding, literally removing any fun or any of the things that made Arcade stand out. That only lasted about 4 or 5 issues as well. I did wonder at the time whether it was done because the publishers worked out that producing four issues of the cheapest, nastiest mag possible to send to Arcade subscribers would cost them less than refunding them for their unfulfilled subscriptions. The only real memory I have of it was that it was where I read that the Dreamcast was being discontinued.
Yeah, I've looked at the arse end of Arcade's run and it's so painfully exactly what they didn't want to be in issue 1. superb we've found Game Mania at least, and even better that the multiple issues means I never have to look at it! Although, don't tell anyone else but next month is Saturn + ;)
0:53 I still own that Victory Boxing Demo Disc from Saturn Plus, I think that was the only Issue I brought. I do recall a Master System Magazines from about 93 or 94 called Master Force. I think that only got about 3 or 4 issues.
You recall well, but Sega Master Force managed 7. I only know this because if you're willing to pop a year or so back into the archives you'll find Episode 47 - "About Eight Minutes" which covers one of the issues. You are adjacent to a better answer, if you go one episode back to 46 you'll find its Nintendo sister N-Force which in its 2nd NES only incarnation was 2 issues.
Cisco Heat got treated surprisingly well on PC. I lost a lot of time to a one-level, one-car demo given away with an early issue of PC Format. I was rubbish enough to not really need more than the one level, although it would have been nice to figure out what the police were doing with what is clearly a 1970s full-size Cadillac.
I am very slowly getting on top of my Watch Later list and have reached the end of June, hence this super late comment which hardly anybody will see, but on the subject of short-running magazines, from my PS1 magazine collecting journey I can present to you the following: PlayStation Magic with 2 issues (October 1999-November 1999) and PlayStation Sports with a single issue (Summer 1999). There is basically zero information about either of these publications online. I don't have PlayStation Magic issue 1, but I do have issue 2. PlayStation Sports I do have, so can confirm that it was supposed to be a quarterly tome, but I'm 99.9% sure the planned Autumn 1999 issue never released. Of course, I could be wrong and these mags may have ran for longer, but I would be genuinely shocked if this was the case considering the research I've done over the years. There are a couple of other PS1 magazines that had single-digit runs, but the above are by far the most obscure, to the extent that PlayStation Magic issue 1 is a white whale of mine (because I'm a massive nerd). Great vid as always :)
Ooh now that's going on the list. As you'll discover somewhere around December I've already grabbed 2 people mentioned in the comments of that video so every chance we'll see this one too :D
04:35 Captain America I get that reference gif goes here :) 32:50 Couldn't find the CP tape? Oh Duds, why didn't you ask me??? My copy's been unplayed since I bought it 32 years ago and I think is still in the cellophane iirc... 35:55 "Will only fool you once but will always fool you once " Promptly gets fooled *a second time* o_O

Rubinho Cucaracho on Spectrum is the best racing game and homebrew - does the c64 not have any excellent homebrew racers? 🤔
I would also add the c64 conversion of Power Drift is the best home computer version by far, Super Cycle by Epyx is also excellent, and there's Pitstop & Pitstop 2
Netgear warmth might be one of your finest turns of phrase.
I hoped someone would spot that one and if I'm honest, I should have realised it'd be you.
I love the channel but dont think to watch so delighted to see this on my homepage and remind me to watch ❤

Are my other four picks for must play Spectrum games of the day. 🎉

The best C64 arcade racer I played was Power Drift. An excellent conversion and still fun to play today.
You're not the only one to suggest it. A redemption video for the C64 may be needed.

I'm not sure what the American police would make of a 300ZX either tbh.

Lovely to hear Mr Wolf's dulcet tones... and Cisco heat looks awful :(
It's awful but at least it's short!
04:35 Captain America I get that reference gif goes here :)

I do like when I leave something in for the very eagle eyed and it gets spotted. If I had a prize you'd get it :D
New computer express I think was the news print mag
He's actually found it in another comment and it's not. NCE was newsprinty though I think yes.
"I've never quite decided if the whole thing was satire, or just awful" /insert WHY NOT BOTH? meme here
Yeah, I suspect Poe's law applies anyway. Either way it was the wrong way to use 8 pages of a Spectrum magazine.
You can bet im playing bear George and frosty right now ……awesome games
If anyone I know would have mates called "George" and "Frosty" it'd be you so that checks out. Let me know what the last level of George is like!
11:23 Half Life 8 confirmed !
I think 3-7 appear elsewhere in the reviews too!
