All the Clothes I Bought in 2023 (thrifted + slow fashion)
As a slow fashion blogger, I've been tracking my clothing purchases and sharing an annual recap since 2019. It’s a way for me to reflect on my consumption habits and provide transparency into my fashion journey.
This year was not a low buy year due to weight gain and finally building my adult closet, but the vast majority of this was secondhand and slow fashion brands (a couple mainstream brands for running and tennis shoes).

Cleaning out my high school closet at age 27 | donating clothes sustainably
มุมมอง 1.6K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
Join me as I clean out my high school closet as responsibly and sustainably as possible! Since 80% of clothing donated to thrift stores ends up trashed or dumped abroad, I wanted to choose local orgs or recycling programs where my clothing would actually go to use (I donated nothing to Goodwill!). In this chatty video, I walk through places to donate clothing in good condition, ratty clothing, ...

How to Approach Gift Giving Sustainably (Ideas + Wrapping Tips)
มุมมอง 1.5K2 ปีที่แล้ว
The holiday season means great food, quality time with friends and family, and thoughtful gestures. But, it’s also one of the most wasteful times of the year. Americans throw away 25% more trash between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. One aspect of that waste is holiday gift giving, between unwanted gifts and all the wrapping paper. There are ways to give gifts more mindfully though, from our appr...
Is it "Okay" to Buy Fast Fashion?
มุมมอง 3.7K2 ปีที่แล้ว
I’m sick of sustainable fashion advocates who shame people for buying fast fashion. There are legitimate reasons that fast fashion can be tough to avoid, and even if you can’t “excuse” those situations, blaming individual consumers isn’t going to change these unethical systems. As a sustainable fashion blogger, here’s why I think buying fast fashion can be acceptable in some cases, and here’s w...

I love how you kept thinking of things to add while editing because it shows the nuance of it all, you know? It's a complicated issue, but taking the idea of thrifting becoming gentrified and saying people should stop thrifting seems so backwards to me. We produce billions of items of clothing every year that end up in landfills in developing countries. There is no shortage of secondhand clothes. There might be a shortage of vintage adidas sweatshirt with cool prints in thrift stores partly due to resellers, sure, but there are still plenty of good, functional and pretty clothes left.

"Imagine going down rabbit holes with every single one of our choices; that's just no way to live." I have an appointment tomorrow with a mental health professional to discuss the potential OCD tendencies I have developed with these exact kinds of worries and fixations; you genuinely don't know how many hours of my life I've spent fruitlessly searching for the "perfect" ethical choice when buying things. It's not just this but so many other things in my life and I'm tired of feeling like I don't even have the right to take up space without feeling super guilty for having needs. It's gotten to a point where I will anxiously fixate on finding the "right" choice for so many things in my day and the fear is honestly so choking and paralyzing, yet I've been so used to it for so long that I didn't notice until a friend who has an OCD diagnosis said he strongly thought I have it too, and it would honestly make a lot of sense. I want to break free of these pointless distress cycles and although I care SO much about the world, I need to remember it's not all on my shoulders. As you say, it is NOT the average person's fault that these systems are in place; targeting wider systems and calling out haul culture are way better and more productive options than self-destruction. I hope to be able to get to a place where I can healthily engage in making more mindful choices, but for now I'm going to maybe step back a bit and let myself buy new work clothes from larger retailers as I'm hoping to get a job soon after a long period of ill health. (I searched for a while earlier but nothing was affordable and/or something that would actually make me feel good to wear. I am proud of myself for clicking away as early as I did, though it was likely 30-60 minutes so still a lot of my time...) Peace and love to everybody ❤

There are also sweatshops, that which do employ American workers, except that those different workers are adults with disabilities, that like myself, that who, in my case are mandatorily ordered to work there! And that while working conditions are safe, as that those sweatshops, that which employ adults with disabilities such as myself are )CARF( accredited, adults with disabilities are still paid sub-minimum wages. And when someone is brought on as, what they call, an )ERS( a time study is performed after the first month after the start date of the employee ,that who is disabled and every 6 months there after! This is because of a legal, but out-dated and retarded loop hole in the )FLSA( known as Section14)C( that which excludes adults with disabilities from basic minimum wage protections! Furthermore, that while those adults with disabilities have survival income from the Social Security Administration, in the form of )SSA( )SSDI( or )SSI( that the sub-minimum wages are more for things just like going out for a meal and a movie on. A very cheap meal at that! And that company CEOs that who oversee those sweatshops, also known as sheltered workshops are making multi-figure salaries that which are way above and beyond industry norms! Important acronyms to remember. )CARF( is the acronym for Certified Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, )CEO( Chief Executive Officer, )FLSA( stands for Fair Labor Standards Act, )SSA stands for Social Security Administration, )SSDI( stands for Social Security Disability Insurance and )SSI( stands for Supplemental Security Income. Glad I can bring this to your attention.

Since 2019, I've been tracking my clothing purchases and posting a recap. It's another tradition that lets me reflect and provide transparency as a slow fashion creator. This year was my first bigger purchase year in a while, for a couple reasons: 1. My body changed. I started lifting again and accidentally bulked up + probably also gained weight from getting older. I couldn't fit into some things I'd had for years, and some clothing I got earlier in 2023 also stopped fitting well (crying since this includes the Son de Flor skirt and My Little Belleville jumpsuit) 2. I've been low buy since at least 2018 and never really built an adult wardrobe. This became clear to me when I finally cleaned out my high school closet over the year. Overall, for PR from brands, I received 10 fashion pieces ("non-essentials") and 9 essential/fitness items. I turned down a lot of PR and also specifically got some things for friends/family, as it lets me see the quality of the brand to write about later, and gives my friends a chance to try ethical brands too. The total value of the PR I kept for myself was $2,260. As I always say, you don’t need to spend tons of money to participate in sustainable fashion; this is just my situation as a blogger sharing ethical brands. It's a big privilege to receive PR, and I don’t take that lightly. I only accept things I know I’ll use for years, and I try to get functional items I would’ve needed to buy anyways. For the total items I bought myself (minus underwear/socks), that includes 19 fashion pieces, 10 accessories (mostly individual earring studs for new piercings), and 17 essentials/fitness pieces. Personally, I spent $1,708, with ~50% of that on essentials/fitness gear. This year, I hope to go back to low buy now that I have a solid wardrobe base. I think I did a decent job in 2023 given the circumstances, but I could've been pickier (for example, I did not *need* 3 casual swimsuits, and there were a few thrifted pieces I didn't *love*). I'm proud that 64% of the "non-essential" clothing was used, and I highly encourage you all to check out Poshmark, Mercari, FB buy sell trade groups, and Noishaf Bazaar. Everything new was also from a slow fashion or small brand, other than some running/tennis shoes. For a more in-depth recap and reflections, check out my TH-cam video!

The black linen pants, when you get them hemmed/tailored you could also get the inner thigh reinforced with the excess fabric that was hemmed off. It's sad when cool ethical brands shut down. Tonle is one in particular I'll miss, I love the moon phase print jumper I got from their second hand platform. I get the majority of my clothes second hand and I find it difficult to buy online from ethical brands because of clothing fit issues and sensory issues. Which really sucks when I there are basics I have to buy new.

    • @imperfectidealist
      @imperfectidealist 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

Thank you for the tip! That's perfect, as when I "hemmed" the pants originally, I actually left all the extra fabric and just sewed it up into the pant leg. Ugh yes, Tonle was a wonderful brand. I was really sad about VETTA and Nube. I'm glad you have that jumper that you'll be able to treasure from Tonle! Totally understand - it can really be a hit or miss buying online, so sometimes we just have to do what's practical. It's awesome that you're able to get most of your clothes secondhand though! Sending hugs for a wonderful 2024 💛

Takeaways from cleaning out my high school closet at age 27: 🕰️ Cleaning out your closet responsibly takes TIME. This whole process took me almost a year (and I still have some things I plan to give away once they’re seasonal again). It’s obviously a lot of effort, but I also appreciate how this large effort makes me more conscious of what I’m bringing into my closet. 👕 What you don’t want can still be desirable to others. I was able to give away 30+ cotton event t-shirts through my local Freecycle group. The lady claimed and picked them up the same afternoon, and said she’d use them for waxing antiques. ♻️ Finally, wanted to call out some cool clothing recycling initiatives: free underwear recycling by @wearsubset + the $20 @for___days take back bag (which becomes credit you can spend on sustainable brands). For formal dresses, check if there’s an org like @fairygoodmothers or Cinderella’s Closet near you - they give dresses away for free to HS students 💃🏻 More tips + resources in my full TH-cam video ➡️ Quick clarification: only 20% of clothing donated to thrift stores is resold domestically in the US. The rest is trashed or dumped abroad (the vast majority), where some can be resold, but that hurts local textile industries. Much of what ends up abroad is garbage and piling up in landfills or polluting streets and waterways. Check out articles by Treehugger and Conscious Life and Style if you want to learn more.

Eventually i want to have a capsule wardrobe with nice quality & sustainable things (i like to watch videos about this & window shop online lately, just for fun) but we have so many other health & household needs that I cant prioritize clothes rn, so its fast fashion for us until the more important things get sorted out 😬

Completely understandable. Consciously shopping at fast fashion stores can be done while remaining “sustainable.” There are a few tips and tricks one can employ in this instance.

I get deeply inspired just seeing a 2 minute video about the light show. Only a person who hasn't learned to value every moment of their life would put a happy meal over something as beautiful as this.

Thank you for this video! I love how you pointed out the insufficiencies in this study. It’s unfortunate that journalists don’t approach their work with the same level of nuance as you

I love to see you back Lily! I actually have a video which also look a long time to shoot which I haven't edited yet about my closet declutter. Cleanouts take so long. I love all your sparkly dresses and pink clothing. I'm sure they are in a loving home! Fun seeing you here again. I've missed your videos!!!

Really happy to know you’re better and to see a new video! This was great inspiration for cleaning out my own closet. Loved the realism of how long it can take to clean out responsibly.
