"individual actions is the most tangible way to get involved and that can spur your interest into larger scale reforms" YES you have to BE the change you want to see first

i agree with this video wholeheartedly! it a mixture of individual and corporate responsibility. i've argued with people who've told me that it's better for people to buy from fast fashion companies instead of thrift stores because of gentrification and the fact that "there's no ethical consumption under capitalism." i wish people would not use those two nuanced topics as a cop out and excuse to keep overconsuming.

For sure, it's really frustrating when people see it as a black and white issue when there's so much nuance!

UPDATE: the Bangladesh Accord was extended! It will be known as the International Accord for Health and Safety in the Textile and Garment Industry since it has the possibility of being expanded to other countries. An updated list of the signatories will be released 9/1.
SECOND UPDATE: The Garment Worker Protection Act was signed into law in late September 2021!

Yess! individual change and systemic change are both required.
I understand that individual actions can feel insignificant compared to the pollution the fashion industry does as a whole, but behavior change is the first thing we can control and it's the only way companies will listen. Only when we don't give them our money, will they feel the pain. Even the fact that companies are greenwashing is a sign that they know about 'conscious consumers'. It's just sad and frustrating that they don't pull through with actual systemic changes.
Plus, I wish people would know how much time, money & knowhow goes into getting information about consumers (behavior) and techniques to influence us. Companies desperately want to know everything about us. They need us. Knowing that, it feels empowering to say no to fast fashion.

Absolutely! Companies don't overproduce and pollute just for the sake of it - they do it because they're making tons of money. And yup, given how much we're bombarded with advertisements and conditioned to keep buying, it is empowering to take a stand against consumerism and fast fashion!

Thank you for articulating this so well! Everything we do can make an impact, and if we use the excuse that it's only a systemic issue we really don't need to do anything whatsoever for any issue that is going on.
    Also love your hair here!
