- I go dumpster diving in Brookline, a pretty rich city just outside Boston. I find food, shoes, games (R-rated Jenga?), and tell bad jokes. A more "chill" video than usual, hope it's fun to watch! Will be back with some more serious sustainability videos soon.

boyfriend's mother lives in allston but grew up in newton. when the BC kids leave for school year everyone goes through the trash finding goodies. they called it an allston christmas!
I adore the name 😍 I remember how much discarded stuff there was moving out of college, so I can imagine how exciting it must be for people in Allston to scout for free stuff!
Dumpster dive haul? I've never seen anything like this this was so interesting! Can't believe people just leave stuff out like that

ooh I just moved out of Boston, but lived in Allston/Brighton the past 5 years and the end of August is the perfect time to find free stuff, it's just like what you saw on the side of the road but more, they call it Allston Christmas!

My tips that I didn't mention in the video are:
1) Go the day before trash pickup to get the best "selection"
2) Be mindful of people who dive out of necessity. I don't think it's unethical to go diving for fun, as it’s no guarantee that those in need would’ve gone diving in the same location. That said, try to avoid diving in areas with a significant low-income population, as many residents may depend on dumpster diving for their livelihood.
@Breeanna Mendiola I love that you've been able to find cool books! And absolutely, I think it's important to balance mindfulness of people who dive out of necessity, and the desire to rescue things from the trash.
Montserrat, out in Beverly (north of Boston) has soooo much stuff on the curbs when the students go home for the summer. You could kit out an entire house with what you find tossed out. It's super sad, but pretty much any University/College when the kids go home is a great place to dumpster dive. Especially since most of it's not even In the rubbish bins.
I did find nice stuff at the trash too. haha. Not in the dumpster because in my building we have a shute? for trash at each floor. My neighbors left out a brand new traditional wool blanket, a brand new photo album from he 80s, sewing supplies (thread, measuring tape, pattern magazines, some fabrics even), some really nice silverware, a frying pan, 2 saucepans, some really nice champagne glasses, and last night i found some red bed sheets a bit stained with wall paint. Yes, i took all this in, cleaned, and I'm using it. I also left out stuff that hopefully was still useful for someone.

Ah, the free curb finds- always a steal. I’d like to get into dumpster diving at some point in my life and I’d like to ask you- have you ever received any vitriol for dumpster diving, specifically as a WOC (I am one also and would like to stay safe during any dives)? Love your work!
So is dumpster diving legal in MA? I'm asking because I want to go but idk the legalities of it
Does The Move out happen each semester? I used to drive Boston but never got the chance to urban forage
It's mainly around September 1st, but it happens on a smaller scale around the end of the college year in May too!
