Is it "Okay" to Buy Fast Fashion?

  • I’m sick of sustainable fashion advocates who shame people for buying fast fashion. There are legitimate reasons that fast fashion can be tough to avoid, and even if you can’t “excuse” those situations, blaming individual consumers isn’t going to change these unethical systems.
As a sustainable fashion blogger, here’s why I think buying fast fashion can be acceptable in some cases, and here’s what we can do to advocate for ethical fashion in an inclusive way.
    TIMESTAMPS:
0:36 - Don’t get me wrong, buying fast fashion is not good
2:20 - But, fast fashion can be tough to avoid completely
3:03 - Real-life examples of needing to buy fast fashion
6:24 - So, we should avoid shaming people buying fast fashion out of necessity
    11:57 - Final thoughts

I have an example. Me and my partner try and live as sustainably as possible on our incomes. However whilst I am avarege size(M) for where we live and get everything in a thrift store, he has problems cause he is super skinny and tall and he can't get pants that fit him. Only one fast fashion store has pants he can actually wear. He feels awful for having to shop there and so he wears them for like 5 years, we get them repaird as many times as possible. We can't afford to have pants made for him at this time. So yeah I agree, sometimes you don't have a choice. We compensate by being as frugal as possible. Thank you for opening this topic.

"Imagine going down rabbit holes with every single one of our choices; that's just no way to live." I have an appointment tomorrow with a mental health professional to discuss the potential OCD tendencies I have developed with these exact kinds of worries and fixations; you genuinely don't know how many hours of my life I've spent fruitlessly searching for the "perfect" ethical choice when buying things. It's not just this but so many other things in my life and I'm tired of feeling like I don't even have the right to take up space without feeling super guilty for having needs. It's gotten to a point where I will anxiously fixate on finding the "right" choice for so many things in my day and the fear is honestly so choking and paralyzing, yet I've been so used to it for so long that I didn't notice until a friend who has an OCD diagnosis said he strongly thought I have it too, and it would honestly make a lot of sense. I want to break free of these pointless distress cycles and although I care SO much about the world, I need to remember it's not all on my shoulders. As you say, it is NOT the average person's fault that these systems are in place; targeting wider systems and calling out haul culture are way better and more productive options than self-destruction. I hope to be able to get to a place where I can healthily engage in making more mindful choices, but for now I'm going to maybe step back a bit and let myself buy new work clothes from larger retailers as I'm hoping to get a job soon after a long period of ill health. (I searched for a while earlier but nothing was affordable and/or something that would actually make me feel good to wear. I am proud of myself for clicking away as early as I did, though it was likely 30-60 minutes so still a lot of my time...) Peace and love to everybody ❤

I rarely buy new clothes, and I always try to upcycle my old clothes and buy second hand when I do end up buying things every few years.

Its true that shaming never works. If you want to get people on your side you need to come from a place of understanding first. Thanks for the video, it was really good!

Buying business professional clothing is a scenario in which I end up purchasing from a fast fashion (ff) label. I personally insist on trying on such clothing before I buy it, because I don't want to guess & wait for an online order only to find it doesn't fit right. It's been a few years since I last purchased business professional clothes, but when I went to the department store the only ethical label I found was Eileen Fisher, and none of those clothes suited me. At the end of that trip, I bought a ff dress that fit me well and that I loved. It's disappointing that the dress was made by a ff brand, but at least I am only supporting them based on my particular need, and I will do what I can to push for change so they adopt ethical & sustainable practices in the future.

I appreciate how you explained your points. The title definitely made me go "what? excuse me?" at first, haha. But once I watched it I see what you're saying and I agree. I think as long as we can even do something small here and there to make a difference it helps.

I thrift everything except for my jeans. I wear a women’s 6 long (us). And I can’t hardly find pants that fit me much less used

I live in Mexico and here shopping second hand sometimes is not always accessible, depending where you live. Some people buy SheIn clothing and they resell them to make money as an extra income because their jobs aren't paid well enough
