    I hate it when people will make jokes about the child labor. I have seen multiple people say “well the kids did a great job” and i could not be more disgusted by the lack of empathy those people have.

    My fav thing to say is “there’s no ethical consumption under capitalism, but just like I still work to confront racism and micro-aggressions in this country I’m still going to do my best to consume less.” This was a very insightful video! I definitely need to do better about not giving hauls attention at all

    Thank you for bringing this up. If you can afford to purchase copious amounts of clothing frequently.
    You can afford to buy sustainable clothing that isn't poor shaming to point that out.

      I agree with you, and it made me think of this quote : "For when people are determined on a mode of conduct which they know to be wrong, they feel injured by the expectation of any thing better from them." - Jane Austen
      A lot of people who have enough money to be able to spend it on sustainable options but don't, know they could do better, but just choose the path of least effort/intentionality.

    i appreciate this video so much!!! i’m going back to school in person for the first time in a year, and realized i need a couple new pieces! my mom wanted to go on an online shopping spree for me, but i realized i literally only need a pair of jeans lol. i think the big takeaway is to think before you shop and be conscious!!! love your videos so much, keep up the great work!!!!💗💗💗

    Loved listening to you talk about these very important topics, as always!! As a low-income person myself, it truly is upsetting to see middle + upper-class people take advantage of low-income people and our financial struggles to justify their spending habits while also blaming us for contributing to the fast fashion issue. Low-income people live more sustainable lifestyles than the middle/upper-class, but you wouldn't know that from all of the misinformation going around.
    It's also upsetting to see how the most popular and influential people on social media are the ones who promote overconsumption, and it's even worse if they pretend to care about sustainability. I've had to unsubscribe from content creators that encourage their followers to use metal straws while simultaneously posting massive haul videos. On the other hand, I'm glad to see people like you speaking up about what true sustainable fashion is!!

    • @imperfectidealist
      @imperfectidealist  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I definitely also never understood why people loved to demonize lower- and middle-income people for purchasing what they need. I feel like we're always spinning in circles with these conversations too, as anytime I talk about fast fashion, people say "but what about poor people!" - but I'm never talking about them since they're already living sustainable lives out of necessity.
      I also have been disappointed with influencers and their contradictory messaging. One day, they post about women's rights, and the next, a swipe-up link to their SHEIN sweater! I totally get that no one is perfect as an individual, but it doesn't seem genuine when people use their platform for these contradictory messages. But this is a conversation for another video one day haha.
      Hope you have a nice week, and thanks always for your thoughtful comments, Anna!

    The hauls from thrift stores kinda bug me too. Especially since so many of the TH-camrs who regularly do them will do a decluttering video a month later. It also kinda bugs me when they'd say they were ✨so broke✨ and then spend $200 at the thrift store every month.

  • @amordesdemona

    I've been wondering why I'm drawn to watch hauls sometimes, even though I rarely buy clothes brand new. It's like I wanna make sure I'm not missing out on cool clothes, but it's counterproductive because sometimes I do go 'okay yeah, there's nothing worth buying there anyway' but if I find out there's a cute piece I want, I'm gonna be thinking about how much I want it, so why am I looking for that feeling in the first place?
    I also think to some degree the brand-new-clothes hauls get more views because they give the possibility of having the same clothes as the influencer, whereas looks from a thrift haul can't really be replicated unless they're very basic solid pieces. But at the same time, why do we want to perfectly replicate a look already out there?
    Also I'm so glad you mentioned that about donations. Donating clothes is not an excuse to buy them, it's still making a lot of waste.

    • @imperfectidealist
      @imperfectidealist  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Absolutely! There definitely is a certain degree of FOMO. And I agree - I think people also watch those major brand hauls to know which pieces are worth buying, especially since a lot of things look one way, but are totally different in person.
      It is funny how we want to replicate exact looks - I see insta pages that are entirely dedicated to helping people dress like certain influencers. I feel like slow fashion actually encourages us to be more creative, as we have to make more out of less!

    i started watching comedic haul videos and it lead to me finding channels about sustainable fashion and learning to sew and I've gotten to the point where I no longer watch hauls and actually feel sick to my stomach when I see them. they used to fill me with this sort of envy bc I've never been able to afford to go shopping much but not the disgust is at how callous people can be considering how much more people are talking about how unethical fast fashion is and how much these influencers don't care. i am glad that finding those videos led me to where I am now (wanting to get a sewing machine so I don't have to buy clothes at all anymore and instead can make my own) but I don't like how popular they are still. here's to hoping more people find themselves falling down the rabbit hole of sustainable fashion TH-camrs instead of fast fashion hauls!

  • @courtneycoffman5157

    It's really intense how much content uploaded is based around buying stuff. Monthly fav videos, hauls, new products of the month, and inevitably the closet/make-up/declutter purge. Especially with the pandemic, where vlogging has become harder, I feel like more and more people rely on the cycle of buy and throw away!

  • @hanneke995

    I remember how jealous I was of all the girsl wearing all the brands like H&M, ZARA and so on.. They had all those huge hauls and everything looked so great on those girls! But I never thought of the fact that they most of the time only worn it once or maybe didn't feel good in it, or that it might be poor quality.. I only thought of how skinny and how beautiful they looked! Now I'm jealous of your video's, haha. I feel guilty about the fact that I have over consumed for so long. I'm definitely trying to find sustainable alternatives for everything, but I'm not there yet! That's okay.. As it does take a lot of time and research. But I just want to thank you for helping me and making all this content!

    I don't really watch fashion hauls but I did used to watch a lot (A LOT) of makeup hauls. I do enjoy them. What I really did not enjoy were the decluttering videos, they gave me anxiety seeing all the plastic pallets heading for the trash. I soon realised that the views I were giving the haul videos were fuelling the declutter videos. Hoarding makeup stresses me out, all the plastic packaging, the product you know will never be finished, makeup has a shelf life, it expires and a lot of makeup cannot be hygienicly passed on to new owners. It's just so inexcusably wasteful. I've stopped watching the bigger makeup creaters and discovered content which focuses on no/low buys, project panning "shopping your stash".

    Yes! The hauls are wasteful and braggy plus if you're new to a much more frugal lifestyle (like me) then it's hard to change your buying/financial habits when these hauls are constantly shoved in your face.

  • @mariek.474

    I think it's similar to fastfood mukbangs, massive hauls are often about the display of overconsumption in itself, about decadence, not at all about the items that are consumed and their quality !
    People who watch hauls are probably either curious about trends or trying to live the thrill of a new purchase through the video/reaction of someone else, but I'm just not interested and don't watch any personally. Not to be a snob, but a mountain of cheap, scratchy polyester clothes that were sewed so quick in a sweatshop that the cut isn't anything flattering isn't anything to be proud or envious about in my opinion : even outside of the bigger problems of fast fashion, its products themselves are often just disapointing if you're someone who loves clothes, understands the construction of them and actually cares about what they purchase. Secondhand shopping is a good way to get things that are a bit older and made to last, although I understand it's not accessible to everyone and it's not as marketable for content creation (as it's not replicable, you can think someone thrifted something cool and try to find something similar but can't get the exact same thing most often).

    • @imperfectidealist
      @imperfectidealist  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Here for the nuance! I agree that having piles of poor quality clothing isn't very enviable either. I do wish thrifting were more accessible as well, especially in terms of sizing. The replicability of thrifting is something creators frequently mention, but I also find it funny that we want to dress exactly like others. I would find it much more helpful to see videos about creative ways to style certain staples or upcycle common pieces!

  • @moonchildmylove7849
    @moonchildmylove7849 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    To be honest:I watch hauls. Most of the Times thrift hauls but also shein hauls. But I nearly dont buy new clothes(this year 3 items). I thrift a lot and sewing often new clothes out of these pieces.I sell my upcycled clothes and thrift finds, because I know that some people can't sew and love so have handmade and more sustainable pieces. I live in a small town and cool 80s blouses get thrown away in my thrift store and I buy them for cheap and sell them on secondhand platforms.Other people can enjoy cool pieces, they do not get burnt and I can make some money for ethical produced clothing I dont want to buy secondhand (like underwear) Maybe I am going to study fashion design:)

    Thank you for these videos. I hate how much I buy clothes and I’m going to slow down a lot. It’s hard to not buy clothes but I’m working on it. I’ve also been switching to second hand for almost all of my clothes.
    Also you should do a video on the chemical effects of fast fashion on our health and workers health. There has been a large amount of lead found in shein clothes recently. And other chemicals in fast fashion. I think you could show people another reason to not consume fast fashion!

  • @kimberlyperrotis8962
    @kimberlyperrotis8962 ปีที่แล้ว

    Only during the lockdowns did I fall off the wagon and buy fast-fashion, lots of H&M, to which my then 80-year old Mom had just introduced me (unlike me, price was her first consideration). It helped keep me sane, I at least had something to look forward to in that vast expanse of boredom and loneliness. (Homebound for 2.5 years because of high risk factors). You’re right, I didn’t wear most of it even once and have been donating the vast majority of it. I didn’t buy any 100% poly, nylon or acrylic items, knowing I couldn’t stand them, but I did try some blends containing them and regretted it on the first wearing, they’re completely unwearable because they don’t breathe at all. I’m trying not to beat myself too much up for this serious lapse in my normally much-better shopping habits, I consider it my “pandemic cost”. I ended up with some credit-card debt and I wasted resources, but I don’t think I’ll lapse again. I do have the privilege of being able to afford good-quality wardrobe items and shop mostly “premium high street” brands, especially French ones, for their top quality, great styles and affordable prices (for my budget). I live Sezane, Equipment and MM la Fleur. They’re certainly more expensive than fast-fashion or “low high street” like Mango, but a good value for their top quality.

    I don’t watch fast-fashion hauls because I don’t buy fast-fashion, I need better-quality, less trendy items. I do watch videos where a stylist I like present a few new high-quality, timeless items, thoughtfully chosen. It doesn’t take a big budget to shop this way, just buy less, buy better and wear what you bought. I won’t pay designer prices, especially as these brands have often downgraded their fabric and material quality. In the last year or two, I was looking for a dark brown skirt. The only one I found was a Ralph Lauren one, but it was 100% polyester with a lining of the same. It was priced at an incredible $400! I noticed that it went on sale for half-price right away, but I still wasn’t tempted. I don’t buy any synthetics or plastics, except for the rayon/viscose family of “manmade cellulosic fibers”, which are made of plant fibers. The high-quality, thick, eco-friendly versions like Ecovero and Tencel are great, breathable, cool and biodegradeable, unlike synthetics.

    hauls are a guilty pleasure, i watch them for my own reasons, but just from watching a few of them over the years it's sooo obvious and cringy how they're always sponsored, and not by great companies either. so you'll see someone showing off a low quality sweatshop made piece of shit that they know they're gonna return (or more likely throw away), all with a fake smile while talking about how "comfortable and stretchy" the obvious halloween costume fabric is... all because low IQ clicks are the modern currency

  • @GrimesKoko
    @GrimesKoko 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've been watching your videos recently and I'm all about consuming less and second hand, but I need you to stop it with the argument about the developping countries. We also have access to fast fashion brands such as Zara, H&m... and online shopping. Also, tailoring is not that great here, everything that you live fashion wise, we have it here too. People are consuming more and more fast fashion brands and as we don't have enough access to sustainable brands yet, we tend to go thrift shopping instead of buying horrible quality products made locally. Thrift markets here are also run by locals and many families live from that income. I hope you do a more thorough research about this and I hope influencers stop saying that.
