Goodford Model Railway
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 3 พ.ย. 2020
A return to the hobby of Railway modelling after around 20 years has invoked the creation of a fictitious location on the GWR, namely - Goodford. These OO gauge modern image model railway videos feature diesel locomotives and rolling stock mainly from around the year 2020.
After a house move and a dedicated model railway room measuring 20’ x 12' was commandeered in late 2020, Goodford MK3 was created. This was my first experience of a layout this size and many mistakes were realised so in 2023 Goodford MK4 took it’s place and whilst this overcame some of the issues, after 6 months it was clear the operational scope was too limited so in 2024 Goodford MK5 was created. The aim is to “finish” this layout in 1 year! The layouts are all DCC, operated with a Roco Z21 via an iPad with all locos being with DCC sound fitted.
This is purely a hobby and for fun, hope you enjoy the channel!

Goodford Model Railway Showcase 8. GWR 800 Set with ESU Loksound V5 LegoManBiffo DCC Sound
A few running shots of the GWR 800 IET sets from Hornby. I didn’t have any luck with their 802 set so decided to strap a couple of 800 sets together to give a longer unit. I model the year 2020 anyway so it makes sense as most units were doubled up to ensure social distancing was possible.
To make this work with the models, initially I tried removing the drive shafts of the trailing set loco however the weight of all 10 coaches was too much for one loco to pull, so I put the drive shafts back in and installed a standard non-sound decoder in the second loco instead.
The front set on the pair is equipped with a matching pair of Legomanbiffo sound decoders (one is an FX version which does the sounds only and does not power a motor). The sounds have been tweaked slightly and random horns have been added. Both sound decoders have been attached to a megabase speaker which has been installed in the rear of coach with some of the interior removed.
I then speed matched both locos so they ran the same. This involved ensuring the top speeds were the same, and then getting the acceleration and deceleration similar. Using the Z21 control system I created a “train” with the 2 locos which in essence is a consist and allows you to control locos with different addresses simultaneously.
Now both sets will function individually (rear set doesn’t have sound though) and coupled together. They are coupled together using specifically designed hunt magnetic couplings. I install these types of couplings on all stock and can’t recommend their latest version enough!
Only a brief video this time round, but hope you enjoy it.

This mega running session includes a brief clip of all rolling stock on Goodford model railway. I was not able to include all locos however all different train types feature. I spent the last few months sorting through unused stock and locos and this is the result. Many of them have now been weathered by me, which is a hurdle i have been too scared to jump over for many years. There is still a ...

มุมมอง 3.5K6 หลายเดือนก่อน
After spending the first 5 months of 2024 building Goodford MK5, i have managed to get the layout to a stage where producing a running session will hopefully offer viewers some interest and background to watching the trains running by. The layout is a roundy roundy with 4 main lines, a large station with junction, a sweeping curve and around 25 track fiddle yard. The layout is approx 20ftx12ft ...

Further progress update on the model railway build. Since the last video I have ballasted and started doing some of the scenery including the majority of the first scenic break. Although this is a traditional road bridge surrounded by trees, it makes for a good scenic break on this layout, covering all 4 main line tracks. Other progress includes the addition of a cement works and retaining wall...

All the main lower level lines have now been laid and are up and running. The track is all Peco code 75 with electrofrog points and is laid on a 3mm cork bed. The point motors are yet to be installed on the lines outside of the fiddle yard but all tracks are now live and 4 trains can run simultaneously on various routes. The layout looks very plain so it’s hard to see the vision for the final p...

Fabulous video and what a great selection of rolling stock to enjoy 10/10
Wow! What a range of stock!
Great running season, you have a great variety of locos that you ran in this video 😁
Brilliant running session! Really enjoyed the variety 😃👍 scenic works are coming along nicely, cheers Darrell
Fantastic set up what make are your log wagons ...
@@davidfisher4962 thanks! The log wagons are Revolution trains IWA wagons. There’s a video on this channel showing how I make the logs for them if you’re interested 👍
Excellent
Very good and enjoyable.
Can't wait for the next video always a inspiration
That's a great variety of trains you've got running there. I'm guessing there's a touch of Carlisle influence going on. I was fully expecting Sir NIgel Gresley and a rake of Pullmans to make an appearance. I like it.
@@NewModelRailway1 thanks for taking the time to comment. I generally run 2 sets of stock, 1 being south west (Dawlish area roughly) and the second being more like Bristol area. Soon I am hoping all possible wagons for Didcot will be launched 😀. TBH, as long as it runs somewhere on the GWR, then there’s a place for it at Goodford!
always look forward to watching these updates. Soon to be starting my own progress updates very soon 🤞
Amazing amount of work gone into this video. A big transformation......keep up the fantastic work
@@2adbty444 thanks for recognising this, took around 15 hours in total!

Nice. I've just bought the donor loco and the kit. I was going to 3D print the parts until I read about the existing kit! I am doing a couple of other Network Rail kits too.
@@modelrailwaynoob There’s more to it than many would realise. I have occasionally listed mine for sale but then ended up keeping it due to the amount of work that went in to converting it. The only bit I didn’t complete was the cameras on the ends. Do you happen to know if these are available as a 3D print anywhere? Good luck with your project 👍
@GoodfordModelRailway Hi, no I haven't seen them as 3d printed but the camera is in my kit. Did you just not include it at the time?
@@modelrailwaynoob think it came as part of the kit I bought but had got to the point of being done with the project so just didn’t ever get round to do it and think the bits ended up in the bin! I did look at some photos of the unit in the year I model (2020) and the unit seems to not have a camera however I suspect this was just on one end.
@GoodfordModelRailway I have seen versions where you could see a mounting bracket but the camera had been removed.
Fantastic models
Fantastic models
Brilliant scenery and infrastructure, you certainly know how to transform into the model railway what you see in real life. Superb, you must be very proud of your creation.
Do you solder you track together
@@fraptorgt7717 some of the track is soldered to wired which connect to a DCC bus. Sections of track are connected with standard fishplates.
What size is railway. Z, N, 2mm?
@@petertownsend8276 OO gauge.
Is that a wills model kit crossing
@@transportsupreme4756 it certainly is, the lights are from Train Tech I think. 👍
@@GoodfordModelRailway would you recommend it for a beginner or is it quite technical to make
@@transportsupreme4756 it’s a relatively low cost kit with a small number of pieces. Instructions are pretty good if I remember rightly. Personally, my attitude to modelling is to just give these things a go, what’s the worst that can happen… 😀
@@GoodfordModelRailway thanks
@@GoodfordModelRailway I’ve just started the hobby and enjoying it so much and you layout is incredible
Cool 🚂
looks great well done 😍
Awesome modern image layout. I see a signal box, but no signals? Is that a work in progress? Thanks for uploading.
@@AllensTrains very good point and one that I forgot to mention in the video. In previous layouts I did the track detailing such as lineside trunking and cabinets before any other scenery however wanted to get an almost finished look on this layout as quickly as possible so the track detailing and signalling will be done when there’s no more visible baseboard. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 👍
@@GoodfordModelRailway Are you going to go for colour light or semaphores? I find the drawback with colour lights ls they are often not visible from the operator's position!
@@AllensTrains I think I’ll have a couple of normal signals on the left of the layout before the junction to protect it, plus one on the branch line and then just one for each track (possibly on several gantries) at the end of the platforms. Part of the reason I haven’t done it yet is due to wanting to get this stage of automation finished as I will be linking signals to ABC braking sections too so when a signal is changed to red (point is also switched to go against the trains direction) it will also activate the ABC braking section. I have considered semaphores however I want to keep the layout close to the year of 2020 as possible when I believe most major UK stations would have primarily been colour light.
Scenery is looking good. Having the trains not running constantly is certainly more interesting and allows you to watch and enjoy your trains run.
Greetings Dave🎉
Modelux is the manufacturer of the office block i was refering to,never seen a city backscene or anything taller than the above mentioned company but if i ever see or hear of anything i will let you know
Having the same problem with company who make the flats, bought a set 3 weeks ago and still no sign of them
@@robertbrown9486 it was the office blocks company that I struggled with, the flats are metcalfe and readily available. I assume that it’s the offices you are referring to 👍. It’s a great shame as they’re quick and easy to build and although you could argue that for what you get they’re over priced, the actual results I would say are reasonable value for money.i do want to buy more however I got frustrated last time! Have you come across any other manufacturers who do pre-cut low relief which are taller than 30cm? I can’t believe no one produces an inner town/city scape backscene either.
Where did you get your display cabinets from?
@@kevg707 think they were just from AMZ, they do come with glass doors but I found they weren’t particularly secure and didn’t fancy them falling on the layout 😂
Nice update, looks impressive
Hi Dave, thanks for the great update. Layout is coming on brilliantly in the time frame you have set yourself. The automation is really effective! Cheers, Karl
Brilliant update mate layout coming on well now 👍
One thing I would say with the station, the large stone wall looks rather odd, and I think it would benefit from arches being cut, as the real things wouldn’t have looked like that, plus it will offer a better view of the tunnels under the building. Looks great though, this is basically my dream layout in terms of track plan, it’s nice to see someone building it !
@@aberfordwest4003 are you referring to the grey wall which supports the canopy in the platform closest to the camera? If so that’s a great idea and certainly eliminates the restricted view issue. I did almost put some stabling tracks over the road in front of this wall to eliminate the issue of limited view but your solution is much better so will definitely be looking in to it. Cheers, Dave 👍
@@GoodfordModelRailway yes, good luck and I’m looking forward to seeing how you do it in the next video!
excellent update
My favourite bit!
I am really enjoying watching the progress on your layout build and seeing how you do things. Looking forward to future updates. Tim

Really looking at doing the shuttle thing on the layout… are you using Loksound decoders not sure if they are compatible ? Or does it need to be a certain decoder, thanks
@@jamiemurney9857 the ESU Loksound V5 decoders are capable of doing ABC braking and ABC shuttle. I have these fitted to over 90% of my locos, the others are Zimo, which are also capable of doing it. The ESU lokprogrammer is extremely useful for setting it up.
@@GoodfordModelRailway Thanks.

I might suggest weathering the concrete sleepers to make them darker as that would be quite realistic as well as allowing them to blend in with the darker wooden sleepers on the points.
