    Hi, just subscribed to your channel as it came up on my TH-cam feed which it hasn’t before. Really nice layout and thoroughly enjoyed you update. Like the current setup with your Z21, it’s how I’m going to run mine but I can understand why you’re going for automation. Cheers for now, John

    For catenary masts you normally place them in a staggered formation so that the contact wire zig zags. On curves the outermost track has the short cantilever armed masts whilst the inside curve has the longer armed cantilever masts, you need to adjust this depending on the direction of the curve. So you might want to readjust your masts so they are correct before the whole of TH-cam points it out 😂.
    In areas where multiple tracks occur like in station areas, lattice gantry masts are used, especially in Series 1 OHLE as seen on the GWML although nearer London an earlier scheme to electrify Heathrow saw Mk3b OHLE installed and therefore multiple track sections used headspan masts.
    I hope this helps. 👍

    I’m not sure what the highlight is for me? Class 60 VTG tanker train was until I saw Tornado!
    She was until recently my only steam loco too, so I always enjoy watching her on the mainline.
    The Scenic section looks impressive & the catenary looks the part, I’m quite jealous you have real sunlight, natural light is a blessing if not just for the shadows.....
    I’m looking for ward to seeing more👀

    Don't put wires up , just watching the train bending round the curve's, it looks very real, uncluttered, well done.

  • @Cheadleridgelanetmd
    @Cheadleridgelanetmd 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The masts are designed to zigzag the wires! It goes long short long short etc on corners they use what’s needed 😊

    • @GoodfordModelRailway
      @GoodfordModelRailway  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Now you’ve said it, that makes perfect sense, guess it prevents continuous wear on one part of the pantograph too 👍

    • @Cheadleridgelanetmd
      @Cheadleridgelanetmd 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GoodfordModelRailway that is the correct answer! I’m a WCML driver so see it daily! On bends it’s pretty much whatever to make it stay in line but on straights it zigzags to even the wear

    • @Vonzack
      @Vonzack 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      On the corners, the wire is fixed towards the outside of the bend, and the wire goes straight to the next post in the curve. The wire going straight to the next post, doesn't follow the curve and so this gives you a zig zag.
      Using the Dapol Masts, Short ones on the outside of the curves and long ones on the inside.

    • @Cheadleridgelanetmd
      @Cheadleridgelanetmd 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Vonzack as a WCML driver I can tell you that isn’t quite correct! You are right with keeping to outside of curve to create the zigzag but masts are what is required to suite the exact location

    This layout is beautiful now, but when you're "finished" (layouts are never "finished") it's going to be absolutely STUNNING! What are the dimensions of your layout? Quite impressive indeed!

    • @GoodfordModelRailway
      @GoodfordModelRailway  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, what a humbling compliment, I truly hope it will become a stunning layout, lots more to learn to get there though and I’m sure I’ll continue to enjoy the journey. The dimensions of the layout are 19’ x 12’ roughly, the previous video was a walk around tour if you’re interested. 😀

  • @SouthDown
    @SouthDown 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As a former modeller of the European (continental) scene, I'd strongly suggest you skip the wire altogether as long as your pantographs are able to not snag the catenary poles (don't ask me how I learnt that). When I could only do DC, the catenary wires were handy for running two trains at the same time, but the cost, effort of installation, and the thickness of the wire were a constant maintenance challenge. If I ever go back to the European scene I'll probably have catenary poles but no wires--which will make it easier to reach cars--and let DCC handle what the wires originally did.

    Your layout looks impressive. Regarding the use of wires on the Dapol OHL, I have used these with the wires that Dapol also provide. If you plan out the spacing these can be fixed quickly & easily. I think there were a few different lengths available if my memory is correct. You can see these in the foreground of my attached video. th-cam.com/video/eOPdMu_DJeI/w-d-xo.html

      To be honest, when I first looked at the clip you kindly shared, I couldn’t see the wires. I think I’ll give it a few months as it is now and consider the wires again after I’ve done the bulk scenery and tried to get my head around the block detection and automation. Really appreciate the feedback and suggestion 👍

    y dont you try train controller it is better than itrain i no it is dearer but it is a lot better than itrain i have both but train controller is a lot better and it works with the z21 which is one off the systems that i have at the moment i am using the ecos system now

    • @GoodfordModelRailway
      @GoodfordModelRailway  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the feedback. The conclusion I came to today was to use the 2 month trial of itrain to try and get my head around the functionality I need to achieve what I want to do so I can work out what level of each software may be required as there seems to be vast differences in prices of the levels of train controller and the most expensive package is twice the cost of itrain. Have you experienced using both packages?

    • @Llamberg.Railway
      @Llamberg.Railway 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Automation is something that needs to be planed well, retrofitting block detection to a layout can be difficult. As to software that is a topic in itself. And something off here that really needs to give it justice. I have used both programs, at present I’m developing ITrain , but use Traincontroller at the moment. At a basic level there is not much between them but when you drill down to advanced features Traincontroller is better. But as you found it’s cost now is ridiculous. There are plus and minus points to both programs, personally TC has the edge as it’s been around longer and from a novice aspect is more intuitive to learne. As I said this is something that needs a more one to one conversation

    • @GoodfordModelRailway
      @GoodfordModelRailway  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Llamberg.Railway really appreciate you taking the time to comment on this and as you say, it’s a big topic of conversation in itself. The automation project has been put on hold for the time being and I’m going to spend more time trying to get the scenery to a stage of no baseboard on show for the foreseeable. Maybe Goodford MK4 will be planned with block detection and automation in mind from the offset…

    • @Llamberg.Railway
      @Llamberg.Railway 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Although I said it can be difficult to retro fit, I should of added not impossible. Personally I would fit it to the current layout if your going to build another mk4 as your find your mistakes you make and how you can do things better next time
