We got what we BARGAINED FOR off-grid (Rocket Mass Heater Part 5)
Charles finishes fabricating a stove door for our batch box style rocket mass heater, and we get our hands on some clay to continue building the cob bench. Plus, we deal with the gullies carved into our driveway by summer rains, and Charles executes the final step in his plan to keep the plumbing lines under the yurt from freezing this winter.
We moved to rural Vermont to experience a new kind of life, and we found it! We arrived two years ago in a travel trailer and got to work setting up our own off-grid systems. Now we’re making a home for ourselves in a 30 foot Pacific Yurt, right here on the side of a mountain. Charles plans and executes our DIY projects, and flies the drone camera. Jill is our TH-cam videographer.

      @OvertheRiverandThroughtheWoods 21 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      We ordered a kit from Pacific Yurts. The yurt itself (30' diameter) was in the range of $30k but we also put a lot of money (around the same amount) into the floor and platform in our climate and on this uneven ground (SIPS for cold winters, composite decking, raised platform, etc.). That does not include finishing the interior or purchasing appliances, which altogether might equal $10-15k. In summary we purchased high quality materials, spent nothing on labor and put in a lot of time to get it where we wanted it.

    Lots of food for thought. Very helpful. Thank you. The mud room obviously contributes a lot towards maintaining the cleanliness of the trailer and reducing the moisture and off odors from outdoor gear. I think I'd want to build a "carport" type structure to keep the rain and snow off the trailer. That would surely increase the efficiency of your heating, wouldn't it? And it would reduce the weathering of the outside surfaces and components.

    • @OvertheRiverandThroughtheWoods
      @OvertheRiverandThroughtheWoods 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That would be ideal, for sure! We were only planning to spend one winter in the RV, though, and our mountaintop is pretty limited in terms of semi-level places where we could build a carport and still maneuver the trailer in and out of it.

I'm confident in your skills and abilities and I just know you'll conquer it. There's a heat tape on my incoming waterline under the house and in my 7 years here it has never frozen. They do well, and if your app tells you if it fails that's great. I should think the only other thing that Charles could add, and probably isn't necessary, would be to line the walls with insulation. Hi Cindy, thanks! We may need to be careful with where we keep the small propane tanks (for backup) this winter... Eventually we will have large (designed for outdoors) propane tanks installed on the property, but that will require a bit of digging to bury the lines so it's not likely to happen this year. We do have plans to build a garage in the future. It's not going to happen quickly and it's unlikely the Bigfoot will be stored in there, but we will get a soft cover for it before this winter.

      Hi Peter, thanks, fingers crossed. Jill did grow up in New England, so she has family close enough for a weekend visit. And we each made a list of the top ten US states we would be willing to make a forever home. Then the ones on both lists got promoted. We actually considered the Big Island of Hawaii first, but the legal system there is not do-it-yourself friendly (in hindsight, we probably should not have been willing to play "lava roulette" anyway). Vermont was next on the list, and we took a trip to scout it out. We liked it so much we never did visit any other states on the list (Pennsylvania and Maine were some of the other contenders).

    Yes!! I'm most confident you will be all ready for winter 😊👍. The generator set up is great. It's fun to see Charles laugh at himself for goofing up, and he's allowed 😄. Looking forward to seeing how you do the front porch. That will be SO nice this winter. I've never seen a bright orange salamander. What kind is it? I remember the little ring necked snakes well from my childhood. I caught an abundance of them. Awhile back I had a lovely toad hanging around my front bed and porch, so I made it a house from a clay pot. It spent the days under it for awhile but I suspect it moved over into the thick perrenial flower bed when it got too hot. I have lots more unused clay pots...for more toad houses 😁. See you next week!! 🥰🌿♥️

      Hi Meg, the salamander is a red eft. That's the terrestrial life stage of the Eastern Newt, which lays eggs in water that hatch out into typical aquatic salamander larvae, which transform into red efts. The twist is that after almost a decade in that form, they RETURN to the water to become aquatic adults and lay their eggs again. The adults are light green with red spots, and they are slimier and have bodies more built for swimming. They are very toxic to eat (especially in the eft stage), which is why they can move so slowly. I spent twenty minutes filming the one at the end of the video, just to get that tiny bit of movement out of it. The last few seconds are sped up 4x and there are pauses deleted, and it's still pretty slow!
