      I hope you'll get some paw fruit trees as they're very medicinal.

    It's really awesome how the amount of windows through the insulated wall is minimized. Whether you did plan for it, or it was included in the kit, it's great in winter, where heat is desperate to run outside; or in summer, where cool air is as desperate as well. All in all, wonderful idea, planning, execution... I'm impressed at your superb job. Hope all the best for you guys, and thanks for showing this to us all!

      Thanks so much! As for the windows, the kit comes with two included in the cost and then we bought one more for extra light. But you're right - we've been inside the same model yurt with more windows and it did heat up even more in summer. Also, the windows can be covered from the outside (we sometimes shutter one of ours on hot days) and if you get the insulation package there are inserts you can put over the windows when controlling temperature is more important to you than letting in light.

    Omg Dr. Devito?! 😨 I took honors biology 2 with you at UTA back in 2018!! I just watched your RV off grid living video because I’m getting ready to do the exact same in my RV! How cool to find your channel and see this beautiful life you created for yourself 🥲 I remember your class being one of my favorites and the first real time I thought about nature in a whole new perspective. I was premed but then a huge shift happened in me/my life and I decided to live a slow free life in nature so I just got back from boondocking in NM with my son and am hoping to find some land down here in TX. I wish you guys the best and look forward to following along on your adventures! 🥲🫶🏼

    I have a place in Albany, Orleans county, and always wondered if a yurt would be able to last the winters. We have a log home and still hear gunshots, chainsaws and what not. Nice video and property.

    Is mold a problem in the yurt? Would like one in the midwest US, but have seen where folks online have had to move after mildew invaded their yurt. Thank you for sharing.

      Hi Megan, we plan to heat with wood instead of propane to keep the moisture down. This winter will be the real test.

    Just watching your video I would be frightened of the bears. How do you cope with them. I am from the UK London

    • @OvertheRiverandThroughtheWoods
      @OvertheRiverandThroughtheWoods  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We do have a healthy respect for the bears, so we try to learn as much as we can about them and do what we can to avoid conflict. Usually black bears are only dangerous in two situations: 1) when you accidentally sneak up on a mom with cubs, and 2) when a bear gets accustomed to being around humans and loses its fear. There are certain ways you are supposed to behave around bears in the rare case of an encounter, which is good to know but maybe hard to keep your head in the actual situation!

    you all have really accomplished a lot in a short span of time, curious though, do you work? own land? rent? how do you survive, all the projects are awesome but costly....non of my business but i am curious......................................................................................................

    • @OvertheRiverandThroughtheWoods
      @OvertheRiverandThroughtheWoods  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Lauren, we haven't broken down all the costs in a video but yes, it took a lot of saving to get to the point where we could do this. We do have a video about that th-cam.com/video/wynlZGu6z38/w-d-xo.html&lc=Ugw9nlapQZV9OSqYfLR4AaABAg (I have worked seasonal and part-time jobs on and off since we've been in Vermont, and we both plan to find employment again in the future).

    That's the first time I've heard that the yurt isn't planned to be your permanent home. Will it become the guest house if you build something else?

    • @OvertheRiverandThroughtheWoods
      @OvertheRiverandThroughtheWoods  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We're a very long way from that possibility, so we'll have to see what shapes up, including finding reliable sources of income. I don't think we would want it to stand empty, and we might think about short or long term rental. Long term would likely require some modifications, like a second door or "real" window for egress.

    How much water have you collected over the last 2 years? Do you feel that it will cover your needs?

    • @OvertheRiverandThroughtheWoods
      @OvertheRiverandThroughtheWoods  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi Laurence, it's hard to measure how much we've collected because we have never come close to using it up. We tried to build the system large enough to get through three months of not being able to collect water during the winter (or during a drought). It turns out we have been able to collect water in the winter (because we can leave the gutters up, and because the snow keeps melting regularly). So we're not at all worried about running out. What we do measure lately is how much we use, which is about 1,000 gallons per month now that we are in the yurt and taking more frequent and longer showers, along with using the dishwasher and doing laundry. The only way we would ever really test the limits of the system is if we ended up needing a lot for irrigating a garden, and even that looks like it would work out ok.
