Welcome to Vermont. Everyone races to get everything done here that needs to be done for the Winter. Eventually, you’ll get to a point where it’s just maintenance. Building and preparing for winter is always nerve racking.

Looking forward to seeing how you do the front porch. That will be SO nice this winter. I've never seen a bright orange salamander. What kind is it? I remember the little ring necked snakes well from my childhood. I caught an abundance of them. Awhile back I had a lovely toad hanging around my front bed and porch, so I made it a house from a clay pot. It spent the days under it for awhile but I suspect it moved over into the thick perrenial flower bed when it got too hot. I have lots more unused clay pots...for more toad houses 😁. Hi Meg, the salamander is a red eft. That's the terrestrial life stage of the Eastern Newt, which lays eggs in water that hatch out into typical aquatic salamander larvae, which transform into red efts. The twist is that after almost a decade in that form, they RETURN to the water to become aquatic adults and lay their eggs again. The adults are light green with red spots, and they are slimier and have bodies more built for swimming. They are very toxic to eat (especially in the eft stage), which is why they can move so slowly. I spent twenty minutes filming the one at the end of the video, just to get that tiny bit of movement out of it. The last few seconds are sped up 4x and there are pauses deleted, and it's still pretty slow!
I really enjoy seeing your progress, wont it be nice to be able to experience a Vermont winter first hand? We on the other hand will be heading to Arizona for the holidays with family and meeting up with some friends from the rally.

I see a few people living even in pretty cold climates in one, Just takes a little more wood :) Looks like you you have back up plans 👍 awesome little wood shed good & sturdy for sure :) Gets a little colder where I at so my shed hold about 11-12 full cord but only use half each year, Always keep a year of dry cut ahead just incase of booboo should happen, & it does a few video's back, looks like you just about have it all together relax stay warm take care!

And the rocket heater looks like it's going to work real well. Me and my son Liam are going to start checking some of your old videos out. And the enclosure for the generator is nicely built I like how you put the doorroc in it for insulation. And the way you guys are moving around in this video I think you'll get your outside porch done. Great job on the wood shed guys and that is called a northeastern ringneck snake . Thanks very much, and welcome aboard! We love our ringneck snakes. We had only seen a few of them on the property up to this point, but there were at least six in this woodpile (and at least four garter snakes - we lost track.)
considering propane tends to freeze up in cold weather do you have a plan for the propane tank? great videos and not surprised at all that you two have made such progress. determination baby! also, do you plan on making a cover/garage for your cars and bigfoot?
Hi Cindy, thanks! We may need to be careful with where we keep the small propane tanks (for backup) this winter... Eventually we will have large (designed for outdoors) propane tanks installed on the property, but that will require a bit of digging to bury the lines so it's not likely to happen this year. We do have plans to build a garage in the future. It's not going to happen quickly and it's unlikely the Bigfoot will be stored in there, but we will get a soft cover for it before this winter.
Great video! I feel confident that you will use those months productively. I would be curious to hear how you two, from TX, chose VT and found property. Was it all “research from afar via web”? Did one of you grow up in the Northeast?
Hi Peter, thanks, fingers crossed. Jill did grow up in New England, so she has family close enough for a weekend visit. And we each made a list of the top ten US states we would be willing to make a forever home. Then the ones on both lists got promoted. We actually considered the Big Island of Hawaii first, but the legal system there is not do-it-yourself friendly (in hindsight, we probably should not have been willing to play "lava roulette" anyway). Vermont was next on the list, and we took a trip to scout it out. We liked it so much we never did visit any other states on the list (Pennsylvania and Maine were some of the other contenders).
