Log Driver's Waltz: A Bikepacking Adventure - Part 4
Log Driver's Waltz: Bikepacking Adventure in Ontario & Quebec Part 4
The Log Driver's Waltz is an 800km loop in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec, that primarily follows lesser-used roads, dirt tracks, bike paths, and some singletrack. While there is nothing really technical about this ride, it has its own challenges ~ punchy little hills that will force you out of the saddle and make you sweat. You can ride at your leisure (as I did) or with the Grand Depart (race) which happens mid-July.

    I've been thinking about rigging up my own panniers and fork bags for some longer riding/camping. What's your take on the viability of using waxed Canvas or cordura over Xpac and what type of fork bag mount do you recommend? In case anyone is wondering Hofman's is still running, I just don't know if I should place another fabric order before I finish sewing my quilt. 😂

    • @SaltyBeard_Adventures
      @SaltyBeard_Adventures วันที่ผ่านมา

      Waxed canvas is extremely heavy in comparison to modern materials and over the life of the bag requires ongoing maintenance. While is has good abrasion resistance, even waxed it can soak, and hold mildew. Unless you are creating a nostalgic looking bike, I would avoid waxed canvass. Yes, (HOGS) Hofman's is still in business if you require a Canadian source.

    How wide can you go before having a rubbing leg issue?

    • @SaltyBeard_Adventures
      @SaltyBeard_Adventures วันที่ผ่านมา

      It depends on a few things, but in general it's the width of your frame that is what you want to consider. If a bag is much wider or narrower than your frame fitting the bag is awkward. Most bags are 2" to 2.5" wide.

    I still like people; I'm old now, too. I just want to let you know I was right there in spirit as you said a goodbye tribute to Iohan. This world will miss seeing his smiling face experiencing outdoor honest adventures. Animals he would have encountered along the way will never know what they'll miss either. More lives should be like Iohan's was. I, nor anybody else can be there for Iohan while he faces struggles alone, but if anyone is hurting like he must have been, please reach out so others may be there for you. and remember, life is no promise one way or another. Many have it far worse than you, such as children suffering torment in burn wards. Find joy that this world ha plenty to offer the fortunate, because it'll be there for you too if fortune finds your particular door, and knocks. Oh, that we all could sit back and laugh at how wastefully foolish we've been all along. Yes, I think we all deserve a time of laughter, even at our own expense. Live well, laugh often, love much. Humor and laughter could heal this tired broken world, I just know it!

    Covered bridges. When we tandemmed to Halifax from Montreal via the eastern Townships, we went off route one day in search of a covered bridge. But the road to it was closed, so we never saw it. On the way back to the highway, we encountered a puppy that insisted on following us (or running around us!). It was a puppy, but a NEWFOUNDLAND puppy and already as big as most dogs. When we got to the busy highway, we waited for someone to turn into the road we came in on, so we could ask them to take the puppy back. Fortunately I speak French so we could explain the situation when someone came by in a pickup. So we and the dog had an adventure. Not all dogs are so friendly.

      I do all my own stunts... LOL -- I create maps, overlays, etc, in my editing software Davinci Resove. Did you watch the Bike Packing BC videos.. those had my own hand painted maps, brought into the same software, with motion overlays, but built in spacial 3D so I could "fly" the viewer through the map.

    Is this going to be a annual ride?

      Not planned as such. There was someone last year that did an anniversary ride in Chile.

    Another beauty. I started cycling in Ottawa in '71, but never got beyond the Gatineau's. Now I REALLY regret it. Beautiful countryside. It must be amazing in the Fall. I should have seen more of Ontario, but I did ride from Montreal to Halifax.
