  • BC EPIC 1000 Westbound Bikepacking Race (Round 2) Act I
    Ymir to Eholt Summit:
    I must be a glutton for punishment because it's been two months, and I'm going to give the BC Epic Bikepacking Racecourse and attempt riding westbound as a time trial.
    Going west is known to be slower due to the long gradual climbs which suck up the time, and a few rough sections that are just plain old tough going in that direction.
    I've broken this into "sleep" sections and Act I is the first push from Fernie to Yimr, about 345km.

    Possibly some of your best work Rob. Such a fun route to do, I suggest that anyone wanting to do it should give it a try, The single track section into Cranbrook is so much fun ✌

    A nice style of commentary, most of the time, you get an essay about every type of cow or gravel on the route and, this keeps it fun & fast!

      Baby steps man. And long rides. Set yourself up one night on an easy flat gravel 100 out & back… start just before sundown and do your first 100, refuel & go for as long as you can…. Tell yourself. “Hey. It’s only 50km if flat cruising before I turn back from home… before you know it… the sun is up, and your wheeling at with your first 200 overnighter!! Woot woot. Or join you local randoneering club. Once you ride through the night….. everything changes man. If you can ride sunrise to sunrise, you can usual push to sundown…. Boom 36hrs!!

    Oh my, I have ridden the race course four times and I have never seen the turn from gravel side road to cross over Hwy 93. Haha. I will have to watch for it next time. I always remembered to turn at the telephone poles, bushwhack and jump the fence.

    • @SaltyBeard_Adventures
      @SaltyBeard_Adventures  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I was scrupulous mapping my route the first time I rode it in 2018 from Fernie. And even with aid, I still missed the turn and eventually found it. Now, I just “kinda” know where it is, and my GPS reminds me to slow down. But yeah, many who race it westward, miss the trail

It’s really fun to watch routes like this that we can relate to and have experienced in part. Helps to relive it! Thanks for the videos and keep up the great work! • @SaltyBeard_Adventures
      @SaltyBeard_Adventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Susan. I was hoping to give people that feeling of being out there with me during my race effort. It’s a different style of shooting for me. Not stopping and setting things up. I’m still learning. There will be a few more “acts” of this race to follow, so you’ll have to see what happens. As for a 2023 BC Epic. I think its time for something, somewhere else…. you know, a change of scenery might change my luck.

    Why is riding westbound considered harder and slower?

    • @SaltyBeard_Adventures
      @SaltyBeard_Adventures  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Going west has two disadvantages… the climb up grey pass is much longer, while it makes for easier climbing, it’s actually slower overall. And the section between trail and Castlegar is marginally more climbing and a little harder in that direction.

    • @SaltyBeard_Adventures
      @SaltyBeard_Adventures  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      And if there’s any wind, it’s usually a headwind going west
