Welcome to the club!!! Tennessee has some wonderful areas to ride (that I’ve seen). Never think that things (regardless of what) are for younger folk. We all do things at our own pace with our own flavour. From spicy to mild. Its all about managing expectations and starting with baby steps. Before your know it, big adventures will be around every corner. Don’t worry about the small stuff and don’t over think things. Its amazing how much fun can be had one an easy overnighter, with minimal gear. Think small and the rewards are big.
What gets me passed the “I could lay in this comfy sleeping position a little longer” is the feeling of thankfulness the first 3 or 4 revolutions on the crank arms and the sense of accomplishment of overcoming.

Glad you like them! ... animal encounters? Hmm.. well, on this trip over two weeks in some relatively remote area. Startled few Elk, deer, had a short conversation with a long-tailed weasel, and scared off 4 bears (one I classify as a close encounter) On Episode 10 00:08:55, A little cub popped onto the road from my left from the bushes and I hit the brakes, in fear that the Sow was behind me. Momma bear (a big fat healthy sow), quickly stood up from the bushes from the same spot. I was about 60-70 ft away.... almost too close for comfort as she could close that gap with 3-4 quick lunges. Luckily the cub turned away from me and the sow stepped out turning the same direction to bark at the cub to move along... they both only went 10ft and turned back into the bushes. Momma bear then spun around and stood up to square me up. I had already dismounted and was walking backwards bear with spray already in hand, at the ready, guiding my bike back with me and talking softly to her. If she wanted to charge, I would drop the bike in front of me, and spray. I raised my voice this time, and she spun to back into the bushes, but popped up on a rock to just stand and watch me. I continued to walk backwards, calling at her to move along. After about 2-3 min, she finally disappeared into the shoulder-high bushes.... but I don't think she went far. I hammered past with a quick shoulder check.
@@SaltyBeard_Adventures Bears freak me out, wild animals are so unpredictable. I've had 2 close encounters with bears and definitely a humbling moment along with frazzled nerves. Once again thanks for sharing your experiences. 👍
yes... it can be a bit unnerving. I've been bluff-charged by a moose once out hunting, just about shat my pants. I that bear encounter was just on the limit of my "oh, scary moment" distance. Momma bear wasn't showing any stress signs of feeling threatened, but things can change quickly. Treat them with respect.
Thanks 😊 After having so many camera problems on this this trip, it’s nice to hear words like that. My creative side is disappointed because things didn’t turn out as planned, but hey… that’s how adventures go. It’s nice to bring people along for the ride.

Lived on the island for 3 years: I remember the winters consisting of 5 months of steady rain…but never bothered by it compared to the -35c blizzards I live in. Thanks for uploading!
Snuggled warm in the sleeping bag, protected from the elements by one's tent, it is hard to get up and get going when it's less than pleasant outside. But once I'm moving I find that a different mindset kicks in. Immersed in the world, be it sunny or rainy, I feel more energized. OTH mile after mile, hour after hour, of rain can sap that energy. But it's still a lot better than sitting on the couch.

I have three tarps… the original Hennessy Hammock tarp. A custom ultralight tarp thats slightly larger & 50% the weight & size of the original tarp… and this one for when I expect lots of rain. Its about 12’-18’ custom made from silpoly. Yes, it’s big, but I can set up a nice cooking area in the rain. Packed, its the same weight & space as my original, and about 3x the size.
Im planning 1st big bike tour. More bike tour than bike packing. On Katy Trail 400 miles about 10 days and plan to camp as much as possible. I have a Big Agnes copper spur solo tent. Should I bring a sil nylon tarp? tent has a good fly. Maybe I have analysis paralysis. What tarp you like?
I guess it depends on what the weather would be like around St. Lois at that time. The BIg Agnes Copper Spur is a great tent on its own… personally I see no need for an extra rainfly. But that’s just me. We always tend to pack more than we need.
Sure is... custom made. I call it the "supa-fly" - it's about 12 x 18. Three panels wide. It's a bit of a beast in the wind, but I can tie it down in so many ways.
