Fell into the same rabbit hole of social media, politics, etc. Last year really took it out of me. I've dropped off almost all social media and stopped watching the news. It's time to put some more miles in and leave all that behind.
Yeah... all those micro dopamine rushes are evil. It's probably easier to go cold turkey and turn it off, than "curbing" bad habits. But, I'll try to be more structured in my day, my process, and in my head.
Looking forward to the new content on the channel. One tip I’m trying to do this year to limit my time on social media is delete all the social media apps off my phone. If I want to go on I’ll use the computer to access them. It takes a more conscious effort and your not pulling out your phone every time your in line waiting or have a spare minute that turns to 20-30min of doom scrolling.
I've started to use Instagram on my main computer, and while it's not really designed for that, it works. And maybe I'll try deleting it from my phone....
Hey there fella, I just love little happy trees, they're awesomely cool. I'm with you for this trip wherever it goes. Salty Beard is one of my TH-cam happy places. Wishing you lots of the good stuff for 2024
Rob, I believe I was one of the first to buy you coffee back in the day because I loved your vision and creativity, but especially your videography. Whatever the subject, I reckon I’d watch just for the storytelling. This video has also challenged me to reflect on my own cycling goals this year. I have a new bike and a new bike means new adventures!
That is true Mark, you were one of the first. Think we've both been through a few things since then. I'm still learning, and it's a tough row to hoe while working a full time job, family, etc. But I'll do my best to bring to some fun, and informative stuff. I too thought a new bike would mean new adventures, and while that "kind-a" happened, too many things got it the way. However, I did put almost 10,000 km on the new bike this year.
Looking forward to what 2024 brings us from you, as well as what we bring to ourselves. Less screen time, more real time, is something I'll be pursuing as well.
Looking forward to seeing you out there in 2024. Love your videos, watched them many times. Also love the old logo but I guess things move on. Bring on your new adventures!
Thanks man... for now, I trudge along at my day job, dreaming of being outdoors. Having fun meeting people and talking about past, present, and future adventures.
Hope you get in some great rides. When i am out touring i often think about people like you that take the time to film their rides.I can not imagine filming, usually focused on getting my aging body over the next hill. Your videos are top shelf. Best wishes for 2024
Thanks Garry. Yes, filming can be a handful. From just going back and forth to get gear, to having your head on swivel thinking of "cool shots" just how/what to shoot. I found many times, I kick myself for not filming something during my travels, because I'm just enjoying the experience, or interacting with a person naturally ~ pulling out a camera complete disrupts that flow. It's a hard balance.
Me and my canine endurance athlete in training are 100% gonna complete your race next time we go bikepacking in BC! The other day she ran behind my bike in the snow for 6 hours and she didn't even seem the least bit tired! I think I was more tired! Not sure when we'll be out that way I'm busy cutting firewood and clearing trails in Nova Scotia right now but one day, for sure. Thanks for the inspiration!
Looking forward to all your adventures! I think it’s healthy to have multiple outlets for your channel! I might take a swing at the caves & coves race one day. Cheers.
Very happy to be part of your community. After a bike crash last summer while setting up an adapted mountain bike course in Ontario, I have yet to return to outdoor riding. Understanding that the injuries could have been worse, a slippery rock at slow speed got the best of me - 8 screws and a plate for my left clavicle is now part of my gearing. While recovering, I returned to canvas painting, photography, and spending more time hiking / outdoor with my spouse. Looking for a better camera lens so I can take amazing photography while hopefully getting back to adventure touring (any suggestions - I use a Canon body). Too bad we could not meet in June 2022 while I was travelling with my fellow rider (aka F) through Victoria. Take care and stay healthy, both physically and mentally 👍🤙😃
Oh, man... I know your battle so well. A simple crash in 2012 took me off the bike for 4 years. 11 broken bones, and 4 surgeries. I was a Nikon shooter for almost all my career, then switched to Canon for a while near the end, before Mirrorless really started. Now I'm shooting a Sony A6600. Not bad. I have both Sony & Sigma lenses, and not really happy with the glass. If I were just shooting still, I would go back to Nikon again. I had the silly idea of returning to a 4x5 view camera. I miss the whole film process. If I were looking at Canon again, I would probably end up with an R6 MKII, a good balance of price vs features. Take care of yourself, and keep in touch.
Very, very exciting! Can't wait to see what the new name and focus brings. The new logo is really nice too! I'm very fond of it. Thank you for continuing to bring very high quality videos and content.
Thanks Kelly, I wanted something simple and clean this go-around.... and funny, I had designed something almost the same in the very beginning. I hope that I can do better with my time management and be a little more productive this next yet.
LOL -- you noticed that eh!? My grandfather's 530 (#47)... well used, well loved, and well cared for too. I have all the bits. I used to have the box, but it suffered some water damage a good while back. :(
@@SaltyBeard_Adventures I couldn't miss it. I'm a Coleman collectors. That's actually what my TH-cam channel is about. I'm up in Courtenay and do a lot of gravel biking, but so far just day trips. One of these days I may try overnighting. I've occasionally taken my little Svea 123 with me to boil water...it's a lot lighter than a 530.
Wow. This seems like an awesome new adventure unfolding ! Your vision for the channel and future endeavours is certainly worth a follow. Cheers, and best wishes for 2024 and beyond. 🍁🤙
Thanks... I wish I could just do this full-time and give it my all. But... we all gotta pay the bills some how right? But I'm trying to up my game, and stay focused with less distractions. I'll do my best.
Great stuff.....could you perhaps do a feature on how to get to the Island and around, particularly for those outside your country. Ease of getting to/from Airport etc Just a thought....
Excellent idea... I'll put that on my idea board. Victoria & Nanaimo have good cycling infrastructure, and even Comox is serviced by many large US centres. Great idea for a topic.
I hope to finally get to my North Island bikepacking discoveries in the Spring. But here's another plan I've had for a long time. I have a folding bike, folding kayak and folding trailer. I can pull the boat in the trailer with the bike, but can also carry the bike and trailer IN the boat. Think of the possibilities. I did a proof of concept trip near Nanaimo before Covid, in fact before I moved there, but I was turned back by a gale. In 2024 I want to do more. Probably up the coast from Nanaimo, but I was also thinking about some cross-Island tours. Of course the gear is all a compromise so I wont be going fast. But I could get from Tahsis to Zeballos faster than anyone on a bike! IF I survive. Advice and opinions are solicited! Barry
That sounds like it could be grand adventures. Bike to a few inlets and kayak back up to some other logging road, and ride back to a few of the little villages... repeat, repeat, repeat. There's a number of options. (Pending bad weather). Get some kayak fishing in along the way (thumbs up)
Actually I always wanted to cycle, hike and kayak the Juan de Fuca trail. Sounds very doable, doesn't? It's a tandem kayak if you want to join me!@@SaltyBeard_Adventures
@@barrybogart5436 / that would be and interesting way to do it.. but probably not something that you could get all bike & boat down along the coast if you also hiked… but, if you biked a ways, dropped down a logging road to the water… paddle.. camp… paddle camp… hike… camp… turn around hike back to stashed bike/boat… paddle, camp, paddle, ride, ride, ride.
I would store the boat somewhere in Sooke on the way out, ride to say Port Renfrew where I would store the bike. Then I would do the hike to Sooke, paddle back to Pt. Jervis and pack it up in the trailer for the ride back. Just need to arrange secure storage at the ends. Sounds easy(!).@@SaltyBeard_Adventures

yes... retiring the old logo has brought me a little sadness, but time to try a little something new, and inject some new "vigour" into me.
I'm looking forward to seeing your new adventures. I wish you all the best in the upcoming year. 😊
