Spain VH/VH - BONUS EPISODE - "The Recap Episode"
Join me as we take a walk down memory lane and see what was going on in the rest of the world as we played the Spain VH/VH campaign.
Today I uploaded the final episode of the long campaign for Spain, so you might want to watch that before this episode! That being said, I will still be working on the Spain campaign and will be completing the world conquest, as promised.
In this bonus episode we're taking a look at the first 15 parts of my Spain series with fog of war lifted to see what was going on with the wacky Julii and Brutii in my campaign. I won't be going past 15 today simply because with fog of war lifted, I would accidentally spoil empire development in the rest of the world if I looked at recent saves with FOW lifted. In another 10 or 15 parts we'll check out parts 16-30, once we have seen enough of the world that there are no more spoilers.
Let me know if you enjoy this video! It's different but I thought it was interesting.
As always, thanks for watching, and have a great day!

    ''These are my early generals... I don't really remember too much about them''. Let me help you out there: died in battle, died in battle, died in battle and died in battle! Ah, memories. It is fun to look at the early turns again. It's usually the most interesting period in any campaign. One thing I always wished for in Rome 1 was more variety in the late campaign. It was inevitably always the Romans, the Egyptians and sometimes the Britons that would end up dominating the map. I guess we got to see the map painted brown in this campaign though!

    On RTW mods: Rome Total War mods are fun, but they are not mod-foldered like Medieval II mods (RTW doesn't have a mod folder, M2TW does), meaning installing a mod on RTW will replace RTW with the mod. so, to keep normal RTW, you need a 2nd install, which is possible but fiddly. Each RTW Mod will have its own installer guide or wizard. I know of Darth Mod, BareBones, Europa Barbarorum, Extended Cultures/realism and Rome Total Realism that they have proper install-wizard programs. There was a time, long ago, that I had installations of normal RTW and 3-4 of those mods. Most mods are a new challenge and a slight jump in difficulty. Darth Mod is a good vanilla difficulty booster, BareBones is of a similar style but adds some historicity. Rome Total Realism and Extended Cultures are fun Europa Barbarorum-light mods and Europa Barbarorum is the one for the extreme history nerd who wants as much historical accuracy as possible in RTW ;)

    A good alternative to "not using unit X" is to have another limit or house rule, such as only being allowed 1 chosen archer for every chosen swordsman in the army, or no more chosen archers than there are regular basic warband units in the army. i.e. only if you have 5 units of basic warband, you can have up to 5 Chosen Archer warbands. Another option is the 1-in-5 rule, of infantry warbands in an army, only 1 in 5 can be Chosen Swordsmen, only 1 in 5 archer warbands can be Chosen Archer. For cav, 1-in-3 can be Noble cav. Things like that. It avoids elite spam but you can still have some. And it's a bit more realistic or logical; what's the point of being a Chosen Warrior if that is the default? ;) Or for every unit of Noble or Chosen the army must include a unit of peasants to represent the servants of these selected and wealthy men :P

    This also works for avoiding the Roman civil war late game. When you’re ready to march in Rome but before the civil war starts, buy the entire empires of your fellow romans, break the deal and take over their final cities with your armies before they can retake any.

    • @tdsniper215
      @tdsniper215 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s a really good idea I haven’t tried before. Especially in the early game, if you could buy their regions you would stunt their growth so completely that they would basically just sit in their capital the whole game. The only issue I can see with doing the purchase in the mid to late game is that most factions lose trust in your diplomacy after the first 15-20 turns or after you’ve been at war with any faction. That being said, I haven’t tested this with buying off of your Roman Allies so I could see it working because of the unique alliance you have with them. Have you tried it?

    • @syphonfillter
      @syphonfillter 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@tdsniper215 I did it recently in a Brutii game (Mobile version tho) where I controlled Greece and much of Anatolia and what was the Seleucid Empire. From what I recall, I got the "popular support to march on Rome" message, moved my armies west. Bought Sicily and most of north africa off the Scipii, and much of Northern Italy and some of southern Gaul off the Julii, before declaring war and taking both their capitals. Year was 250bc, so it was still pretty early which might be why. Later than I expected it would work though. I know in Medieval 2, unfulfilled trade rights agreements tank your reputation hard and are a major reason why everyone in the world randomly starts treating you like you're a con artist - and obviously it's very easy to end up with unfulfilled trade. I have a habit from Medieval still of only accepting trade deals I am sure I'll be fulfilling them, so was mostly just bargaining for map info outside of that - maybe it is the case in Rome as well that trade rights is a major source of trust loss and that's why it worked. Or it might be that the unique Roman alliance means they trust trust you implicitly and so were open to the deal anyway. It might need some testing.

    Dacia is one of the easiest with only one disadvantage - their war band can't form phalanx like Germanic (but you can easily mod all spear units in the game to phalanx as it only makes sense). 1. Dacia has long range archers at 2nd tier building = big advantage. 2. population growth is good and I supplement with mercenaries to grow faster. 3. You have access to 2 easy slave lands on start, easy take over, I would take at least 1 of them. 4. immediately taking Macedon, ally with Rome. If Macedon grows you are in trouble because of long pike-phalanx spamming. 5. Push to the sea for ports to boost economy and naval access by taking on Thrace with your long range Archers by now.

    • @tdsniper215
      @tdsniper215 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Now that I’ve played out Dacia, the claims of it being difficult are wild in my opinion. Definitely easy if you include the long range archers. In order to make it a challenge, you have to roleplay challenges into the campaign, even on very hard. In my mind, the really hard campaigns definitely include Numidia, and probably Spain, (but I’m biased by that being the first VH/VH campaign I played on the channel so a lot of the difficulty was a skill issue). I’m sure there are others, but most factions have an exploitable strength that makes them OP.

    • @Noiconnotag
      @Noiconnotag 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@tdsniper215 Numidia is not hard but extremely boring because their units suck big time and you spend much time against Egypt spamming armies like crazy. For Numidia you need to take Cartage immediately (wait for their garrison to leave defending against Rome), then it is simple expansion towards Egypt just to hold them off, I would not waste time on Siwa (near the Egypt border, it is a sink hole. When Egypt leaves Alexandria and the 2 southern cities unprotected go take them with ships, this will insure your expansion to destroy Egypt or simply holding them off so you can concentrate efforts on Sicily and north to Rome. Egypt makes it very boring, just spam spam spam, I honestly believe this faction is broken.

    Haha, an all-mercenary challenge in Med II would be interesting if you started as the Turks, or Egypt, because almost all the mercs early on out that way are cavalry. Good for field battles, but not sure how you assault a settlement.. Of course it depends if crusade/jihad mercenaries are included. If so, no problem in the Middle East, plenty of disposable infantry in that case. In Europe, it's not hard to keep adding spearmen and crossbows up to a point, so your actual armies won't suck. You'd need to abuse the crusade mechanic to get access to cavalry though. Sounds like fun, because it would force you to really refine your battle approach. Can't just feed units into the meat grinder, or rely on mass routs from the enemy. You'd have to be extremely methodological. Seems like the kind of campaign where it'd be advisable to limit it to 45-region win conditions, because the episodes themselves would be slower paced.

    • @tdsniper215
      @tdsniper215 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We are thinking along exactly the same lines as far as which faction to choose 😉 I don’t think I’m going to allow Jihad / Crusade mercenaries unless it’s for a few very specific units I want to grab. I don’t love the feeling of being able to materialize entire full stack armies out of thin air and rampage through 4-5 cities in a row. But if it proves impossibly difficult, I might change my mind about that. I want to see if I can manage an empire with the extremely limited unit pool of standard mercs. It’s going to be a much slower paced campaign, but it will be a really fun exploration of Medieval II’s unique mechanics

    Oh hey, it's back! I think your economy is slowly recovering, still a bit precarious though. I wonder if it might be worth closing off at least one of the - four, five? - theatres of war currently going on. Probably Scythia, or in Greece once you knock out Macedon. A lot of wars means a lot of troops draining the economy. It's one reason why I'm not sure it's even worth marching over to the north east corner at the moment, the settlements there don't even pay for themselves. You'll have to have a long-term plan for fighting in the East in general, re. hoplites or lack thereof. I think you'll need some, not just to fight Pontus, but Egypt and Parthia thereafter. Once your economy is in order, it might be worth leaving a general or two in some recruiting hotspots to hire every mercenary hoplite you can get your hands on. Something to deter chariots and also soak up horse-archer ammo in field battles. For city sieges it's not as important though.

      @tdsniper215 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’ve been feeling the same thing honestly. I always feel strongly about finishing my enemies before leaving them alone, so I think I’ll finish off Macedon and Scythia before leaving them alone, but after that I have no real conflict with Greece or Parthia until they start one so I’m liking the sound of disbanding the expensive armies and training new chosen swordsmen in Italy / mercenaries to send over to Asia Minor. Those chariots definitely need to be addressed, especially if I’m going to continue with the Egyptians after Pontus, so hoplites are going to be very important going forward. I’ll have to buy as many as I can.

      All good! Moved from Phoenix, AZ to Orlando, FL. I’ve been in AZ all my life and it was great but wanted a change because it’s a bit boring. I just turned 25 so being close to things to do and people to meet was a big priority for me 👍🏻 So far loving it :)

    A little secret about the temples is their effects on the governors traits. Dacia has 2 religions that effect the economy very positively Bendis turns governors into keen farmers who boost money from farming & population growth in any settlement they govern Zalmoxis turns governors into keen miners who boost money from mining in any settlement they govern. That's especially useful in Segestica which has both gold & silver!

    • @tdsniper215
      @tdsniper215 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      RTW is so elegant it’s insane. I knew some of the more obvious temple effects on generals like taverns and bacchus ruining your generals with alcoholism but I honestly had no idea about these effects from Zalmoxis and Bendis and will definitely incorporate these in the rest of my Dacia campaign! Thanks!

    Spain doesn’t seem like a bad starting position in terms of surrounding factions. The parts of Gaul and Carthage that are on the peninsula very seldom get rescuing reinforcements, and Gaul have far more pressing problems to deal with normally. It’s just that the romans will crush you once you reach each other that’s the problem, such a bad army. A Mediterranean port in Osca is my top priority for spend

    • @tdsniper215
      @tdsniper215 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Spain is an okay early game unless the Romans land a full stack army on your shores, in which case you’re absolutely screwed. The Spanish armada is a necessity to bounce Roman and Carthaginian armies that come every few turns by fleet. Other than that, the campaign is pretty simple. Unfortunately you have to use almost exclusively long shield cavalry because you have the worst missile troops in the game. The infantry is interesting but pretty much unusable against decent armies on VH/VH difficulty. They just break way too easily because of their poor defense stats. Bull warriors will get chewed up by praetorians even when they outnumber them 3 to 1. It’s pretty bad 😅 I LOVE a challenging RTW campaign but Spain is probably best as a short campaign because the unit composition gets so boring over time.

    Hmmm. After what I said yesterday, and after playing many Dacia VH campaigns including yet another one I started earlier today, it's clear your Dacia campaign is NOT on VH campaign difficulty. I don't know if that's purposeful on your part, because I don't have a reason to assume out of hand that you're a liar, or if your game bugged and isn't operating on VH campaign rules. But in either event, despite your video showing VH/VH in your faction select screen, your Dacia campaign is ABSOLUTELY NOT behaving as if it were VH campaign. Battle sure. But not campaign. I hope it's not you lying and showing a different faction select screen. That whole "buggy" thing, if I were cynical, would sound like BS to me. But like I said I have no reason to just assume........... At the very least, Germania should have attacked you by the second part of your Dacia series. Especially when you beelined to Segestica and left Aquincum open. Germania will go for Lovisce and then try to come down and attack Campus Iazagys from the north, whether you put a tower/spy there or not. You have much too easy a time and experienced none of that.

      @tdsniper215 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Bro I don’t know. This game is 20 years old. I’ve never heard of that as a bug and I certainly am not faking videos for 419 subs. In fact, the lack of difficulty really messed with this series progression. Maybe you’ll enjoy the Spain playthrough more? It didn’t go nearly as well

  • @johnroscoe2406
    @johnroscoe2406 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Your Dacia VH Campaign Difficulty is incredibly strange. VH Campaign AI dogpiles Dacia the moment Dacia starts to either build up or takes a rebel settlement, no matter which one it is. That didn't happen to you. The AI goes insane when you're about to bulldoze a faction out of existence, yet nobody messed with you at all while you took your time with Thrace. That's VERY strange. Scythia or Germania "should" have attacked you. Also on VH Campaign Difficulty, you typically can only pull off the 1000 to 2000 for map info 1, maybe 2 times, before factions start declining it or forcing it down to low 100s. You were able to do it multiple times. I'm not entirely certain your entire Dacia playthrough actually had VH Campaign Difficulty. Your were able to control the pace in the beginning to a degree that is very strange for VH Campaign, especially in that area of the map. Do you think it's possible your game bugged and defaulted the Campaign back to Medium? That's happened to me once or twice.
