To be honest, I spend most of my time yelling at the screen that you should be buying mercenaries. Especially when you build two rams despite having only one infantry unit that can push them. XD

😂 I hate buying mercenaries unless they’re really fun
I am definitely that guy that only brings one dude to push the ram and carry the drink cooler. It’s a habit I’m trying to beat 🫡 but to be fair I can’t remember the last time I actually failed to bust down a wall because I only brought one unit of infantry.
I promise I’ll buy some more mercenaries eventually but I’d rather suffer from difficult battles than impossible economic issues 🤷🏼‍♂️

I'll admit it's mostly an instinctual reaction on my part. But, I would argue that so long as you have an ok economy, hiring mercenaries for set uses in battle and then disbanding them shortly after would be both historically authentic and practical. Just something to consider.@@tdsniper215

That’s a good point, especially with the benefit of mercenaries boosting your population when disbanded 🙏🏻

I'd recruit a couple units of warband in Segestica. Stood on the town square, they could cancel out some Gaulish warband if need be. IMO, you're right about the mercs. Most aren't worth the money, on upkeep especially. The Scythians, Cretans, and hoplites are worth it. Elephants are a novelty, but hey, might as well have fun.

I love the elephants and will buy them whenever possible 🫡 But yeah it’s a real struggle not just buying every single merc in the region because it gets so expensive so fast. The initial recruitment cost is the main problem because if you’re buying a unit of sarmations for 1200 denarii and then just losing half of them in a charge against a general, it’s really gonna wreck the economy

i have found that the more money you have in reserve, the less likely the AI will accept giving you more on negotiations. The more you have, the more they want and the less they will part with.

I think that might be the case. The other option is that the more time passes, the more they feel self-sufficient and have probably gotten map information and trade rights off of everyone else so they don’t really need me. Especially if they have maxed out their naval trade routes with others, they don’t really benefit much from anything I can offer. I think AI spends way more time on diplomacy than most human players in the early game, based on how far they stretch across the map.

Once you get beyond the first 10-15 turns, or have already talked to 5-6 different factions, for whatever reason the AI generally stops being willing to pay for map info or trade rights. Doesn't matter how much of the map you can reveal to them, they just start being fussy. They'll do a straight swap, but they won't pay any more. Later on they start being fussy about even doing basic map info for map info swaps, although I'm primarily basing that on Med II diplomacy. They also stop accepting any alliances you propose. Basically it's worth investing in diplomats in the very early game, but after that they're mostly moot.
Hopefully your northern front holds whilst you're busy in the Balkans. Be interesting to see when the Romans decide to stick their nose in too.

Yeah I have noticed everything is drying up on the diplomatic front. I’m glad I managed to get the economy going and didn’t buy too many mercenaries because the nest egg I have is gonna be important now that I’m not selling map information and trade rights anymore.
I’m hoping the Romans keep to themselves because it’s gonna get really messy if I get involved in combat with the Macedonians, Scythians, and Gauls and then get pushed into by the Romans 😅 but I know it is somewhat inevitable that they’ll get jealous of us having all the fun and try to attack

@@tdsniper215 It's fine with the diplomacy, think of it as a 'kick-starter' rather than a false economy.
Essentially the money you make from very early diplomacy helps pay for the mining and farm infrastructure you put down, and maybe a few mercs to help take rebel settlements. Now that you have quite a few settlements and decent infrastructure, your eco can legitimately support the armies you need to both expand and defend your borders. You're already running out of things to build in a few settlements, so your eco is well under control.
Now you're at the stage where sacking cities replaces diplo money as the 'unexpected cash influx', haha.

Before the battle, there is a screen with the armies and reinforcements. The red symbol in the corner means the reinforcing garrison won't survive a loss because they are under seige. You don't have to finish the garrison.

    • @tdsniper215
      @tdsniper215  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

I should keep that in mind, I usually forget to check it and then forget which army / units belonged to the garrison in the thick of the combat, but it would save some casualties for sure
