I may be on the platform for #6 tomorrow morning as I wait for #5 as well. Sounded like they lit up the place with the electric transmission lines across the tracks and the fires. ​@MikeJensen-jt9yr We were stopped for 7 hours at a block signal west of Winnemucca so I didn't get to see the fire until we passed through the area later. I talked to the conductor and it was a big deal. I80 was shut down for hours, and it looked to me like the fire jumped the tracks - and likely ignited some ties in the process of doing so. None of this was Amtrak's fault naturally. The crew timed out and a relief crew had to be brought to Elko to keep us on the move. The interesting thing is I am seeing the Great Salt Lake for the first time. As I type this @10:55am we are about 15 minutes from SLC.

The Zephyr will get disrupted by the closure of the Moffat Tunnel this weekend (23rd & 24th) It is a planned service break with plenty of notification by AMTRAK to both #5 & #6. A bus bridge will be in service to move passengers across the mountains with a stop in Glenwood Springs. Then it's back to business as usual. Hope that you have a great Wednesday back there. I am sure there was a reduction on the brake air pipe as they were squealing on all the cars that came by me. I was not sure who the operator (engineer of yore) was today, but I think there was some commuter train background as that happens a lot with them. I know the roosters and a dog were at it, but it may have been crickets chirping There was a Killdeer that was being harassed by a cat. The cat lost. Wow! 60s back there? Yep. Sounds like a fake fall to me. If the humidity stays low, the 60s here are comfortable sleeping. For the past few days, the temps have stayed in the higher range well past sunset. It was still 73 F. when I got up at 0330 this morning. Cooled off quickly though. Now we have cleared 85 F. and still climbing. Sadly, the humidity is also on the rise. Good morning, Ben, I thank you for looking in and the comments. We are 77 F and cloudy. Still headed for 95 F. today. I would like to see another sleeper added along with a regular coach or two. I have been a passenger in the dorm/transition/sleeper (car 2 in the train order). Comfortable yet busy. A true sleeper added to the consist would be nice not only for the passengers but for the train staff as well. I was unaware of roomettes on the lower floor of the sleepers. I thought they were all on the upper floor with family rooms on the lower floor. Oh well. At least the Amish who departed the train today had a driver there to take them north. The last family didn't have a driver readily at hand. I think they had a 3 hour wait and then a 3 hour ride north. Hope that you have a great Wednesday back there. I believe a" normal " sleeper has a family room plus handicap accessible room plus 4 roomettes on lower level. Upper level has 10 roomettes plus 5 bedrooms.. Most on coach ride upper level but there are about 8-10 seats on lower level. We rode lower level both trips of City of New Orleans since it is night time all the way from Memphis to Chicago and back so sight seeing is out of the question. Lower level seats in lounge car would be ok in flat desert area if top level is crowded.

@@benedmonson3445 I learned something today. All I have seen in the sleepers were the big rooms and the restrooms and showers on the lower floor. The car attendants lock off the restroom on the upper floor for emergency use only from what I've been told. It's all good.

Good morning, Cheryl; I thank you for dialing in along with the comments. Yesterday was fairly reasonable and no thunderstorms here. Monday, we had reported "land spouts". I am unsure if the NWS meant dust devils or clear air tornados. The we did get 0.75 inch of rain. May get more this afternoon. That was a full platform this morning. Nice to see them as there were none waiting when I got there about 20 minutes before the Zephyr did. Friday and Saturday are weird Zephyr days as the UP is closing the Moffat Tunnel to complete the work they started a month ago. #5 will turn in Denver and #6 will turn in Grand Junction with a bus bridge between. Yep. I've tried to dismiss all the other crap including the DNC in Chicago and elsewhere. All the powermongers are at it again, still, yet, and already. Anyway, have a great Wednesday down there. Got stopped by fire with plenty of sparks due to an electrical transmission line falling across the tracks, way out west. The owls here have moved on. I have not heard or seen any this year. With the new owners of the grain elevator cleaning and repairing most of the roosting birds there are not around. The owls that were in one of the trees near the house have also moved on. The phases and names of the full moons has been of interest to me for some time. I too like the darker lighting just for the same reason s you. After 0.75 inch of rain last night, the streets and areas I ride were still a mess. Decided the pickup was the better option today. May get the trike back on the road tomorrow. I saw several stills of the full moon taken at different places. Just couldn't draw in the ISS with it as from the camera POV, the ISS was passing just to the right of the moon. It was visible but the cam didn't pick it up. Oh well. There will be other orbits. I do like scenes of full moon over a seascape. I have seen that in real time a couple of times. I'll trade you some 56 % humidity and 65 F dew point for your 70s temperatures. LOL! Upper 90s today and tomorrow with a sniff of rain predicted. We did get 0.75-inch last night. My lawn liked it. So did the weeds and the crabgrass. We also had reports of "land spouts" south of town about 15 miles. They couldn't give a better description. The ISS was just to the right of the moon and moving from southwest to northeast I did have eyes on it and hoped the camera would also see it. Oh well. There will be another time. AS for the folks who got on, 1 was going to drive a car back from Denver and the auction house there. Others were headed for Glenwood Springs. AA nice time of year to head there. The boarding passengers were all going different places with 1 dropping off in Denver to return with a rubber- tired vehicle and the others headed for Glenwood Springs and points beyond. I had been flummoxed by the clouds yesterday in getting video of the moon. There won't be another like this in my lifetime. I think I read it will happen again on 2037. Well. that car was gutted by the FRA and equipped with enough electronic recording gear to make any track tech happy. I looked for the magnetometers on trucks, but this car was not so equipped. I think all of the FRA cars are open vestibule style. At least the ones I have seen here. I have never seen the interiors of the cars but do know they all mount a thick plexiglass style door. I had planned on riding the trike but don't have pontoon outriggers and paddle wheels for it. LOL! We did get a lot of rain here last night. It may dry out just in time to do it all again tomorrow. Yep. It isn't uncommon to see an FRA "Office of Safety" car bringing up the rear of the Zephyr. I was looking to see if this car had the track monitors mounted on the leading truck. Nope. The car is not manned but does have recording equipment installed. They may be checking how much and where BNSF needs to improve the tracks. Anyway, Have a great Tuesday back there. Good morning, Papa Geoff; Thanks for dialing in as well as the comments. It is somewhat reassuring to hear that the local FEMA inspectors are getting some work accomplished. We had "land spouts" reported just south of town yesterday afternoon. I am unsure of the type. "Dust devil" or "invisible funnel" tornado. It was over open range and not dangerous to humans. WE did get a bunch of rain without any hail last night. Dropped the temp from 95 to about 70. Today, back into the oven about like your area as we now have the humidity to contend with. I don't think our school system was prepared for this weather when they started the school term last week. I am riding the trike again and am sure the "helicopter parents" will be looking for someone to mow down as they take their kids to school. If the weather stays decent, I'll be on it again tomorrow. I would dearly love to see $3.00 a gallon for gas here. The local "OPEC" has set it at $3.46 or more for now. The Denver metro area is paying $3.00 or less. It is a gouge and scalp as you can in whatever the market can stand. Food hasn't budged in prices the grocery chains are saying they have reduced the prices on. Won't go into or near "Wal-mart". They sold out too long ago. Now there is a person wanting to go full communist with the country. How well did that work elsewhere?? Yep. Mandy was lead conductor this morning. It was nice to hear her voice. We have weather alerts out for "land spouts forming due south of here. The cloud producing that is growing and moving due east over mostly open land. We may see a rain drop or two later. The trike is under wraps again. I'll have it out for tomorrow's trip to the depot. I suspect there is a few folks that boarded in Denver. Conductor Brad has the #5 from Denver to Grand Junction today. I have met him here a couple of times and he is a draw to the Zephyr. His retirement date is soon approaching. I know that he was instrumental in AMTRAK establishing the Winter Park Express trains. He was lead conductor on the final WPE run last season. I am sure that was bittersweet for him. I hadn't planned on folks from the sleeper car until I saw Mandy at the door of that car. Last time I had a problem with a recliner, I used my 12 lb. "fine adjustment tool" on it and haven't had a problem with it since. LOL! Traded what was led=ft in on a really nice glider chair. I found the sofa is just as comfortable anymore. The weather is turning sour here with 99% humidity dew point of 76 and temp reported to be 77 F. Rin this afternoon out here. The humidity jumped about 98% and now a still southeast wind is stirring things up. Possible rain this afternoon but the humidity is the same as you experience back there. UGH! Tomorrow back to the 100s. That was a large group of folks who detrained here today. I like that once in a while. OMG! A paid vaca day? Wow! I do hope that you enjoy it.
