Foods & Drinks to Make More Breastmilk
In this video I answer a question that I get asked a lot; “What foods and drinks should I be eating to increase my milk supply?”
Companies are taking advantage of and making a lot of money off of moms who are struggling with breastfeeding. The things that we eat and drink have very little effect on our milk supply.
Check out this video where I explain this in more detail and give you the three keys for making more breastmilk. ❤

Breast Pumps: There are many great pumps out there, but the Spectra 2 Plus is my all-around favorite. Many insurance companies will give you a pump. If the spectra is on the list, ask for it!

I used boob shell, milk collectors when I was breastfeeding. I think they are an amazing asset in the first few weeks when you might be leaking milk. You can collect the milk and actually store it instead of letting it be wasted. They also add some air circulation and help with Some tenderness that might have happened in the first few weeks.
I recommend having two so that you always have one clean and ready to go.
I love these so much that I often give them for baby shower gifts.

    I had such a struggle breastfeeding my first and have been considering combo feeding as a way to lessen my fears about weight loss in the early days and as a possible way to be able to sleep more than I could with my first. This video helped a lot. I do still plan to meet with an IBCLC that I worked with previously to help me be more prepared for this new baby.

    Thanks for this video! What if the baby does not empty the breast, what would you recommend? Or if the baby stays at the breast for a long time? @@jailasp7007 Are you giving formula at every feeding? If so, how much? Have you started this process? If so, how much less formula is baby needing? How old is baby? The term “emptying the breast” is very misleading. When your breast breastfeeding, your breasts are never actually empty. They always have more drops to give. The milk is not stored in your breast, it’s produced while younurse or pump. When your breasts feel full, that’s engorgement. Engorgement is swelling/inflammation.

      @ I am supplementing because baby lost some weight when he was 5 weeks old and I had a mastitis that killed my supply. I supplement with my milk and with formula, approx 2-3 oz per feeding after offering both breasts, and then I express. Not sure if my supply has increased, baby is now 8 w old. Would it be possible to recover the supply? I wonder if baby is not really sucking well although the latch is very good. Sometimes (and lately) I feel a deeper suction, I wonder if it should always be like that. Thanks

      @@jailasp7007 I know that feedings will take a long time if you give just half of the formula, feed from both breasts again, then back to formula if baby seems hungry. Only you can decide if this is something that will work for you. It will be a lot of work for a while. Are there some feedings (maybe morning) that baby is satisfied with the breast only?

Having poops every day (though it can be normal for some babies over 1 month to not poop every day) and 6 or more wet diapers every day shows that she’s getting enough to eat. I usually only see those things when mom has a forceful letdown/over supply. When mom has this condition, baby will often be extra gassy and seem hungry all the time. They are often misdiagnosed as having a lip/tongue tie. Baby will often bite down to control the flow. That causes the lipstick shaped nipple. Tell me how you use the Haakaa.

I use the Haaka by putting it on the opposite side that I’m not feeding her for my letdown. She does seem gassy as she does poop every day at least once or twice. So starting yesterday I started to put her in the breast first then bottle feed her and also pumping, but I only get 1 or 2 oz.

Last night I gave her formula. After that formula my baby still wants to feed at breast, which is a good thing I think. Can my milk supply be increased. I only have a manual pump, which I used in the first week of feeding. Should I invest in automatic breast pump? My baby’s weight is normal doc said but her length is below normal. (Born at 3700g/51cm, now 6000g/55cm). My concern is she is not feeding enough due to gas and reflux. I don’t feel confident when I breastfeed it worries me. What can I do better to get my milk supply back?

    • @marycahillclc
      @marycahillclc 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@MySensoria it’s very normal for your breasts to feel flat and empty by now. Breastmilk is made while baby nurses or you pump. Breastmilk is not stored in your breasts. When it feels like it’s stored there, that is actually inflammation/swelling of the breast tissue. Your baby is almost 4 months old, correct? Have you needed to give formula before now? On those five wet diapers, does at least one of those wet diapers feel heavy? If it does that can definitely be counted as two wet diapers. You can pump but the very best way to increase or maintain your milk supply is by having baby at the breast as long and as often as possible . Babies will be extra fussy in the evening because they’re overly tired or overly stimulated or just not feeling well. It hurts to grow so quickly. This fussiness in the evenings can make moms believe that their supply is low when it really is not. If baby seems satisfied after morning feedings, but not at night, this can let you know that your supply is fine and baby is just not feeling well in the evening. This extra fussy time can last a few days or a week at a time, but then usually gets better For a time. What sort of doctor made the diagnosis that baby has a lip and tongue tie? Are you having pain when baby is nursing? Do you know if you have a forceful letdown? Does baby choke while feeding her the breast?

    • @MySensoria
      @MySensoria 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ Thank you very much for the information. Yes, my baby is about 4 months old. When my breasts are full it seems like it is easier for my baby to nurse. Otherwise she gets fussy and shakes her head. Sometimes I do feel pain while nursing, specially when nursing session takes more than 30 minutes. After that my nipple looks like a lipstick. And the session would be ended by me, not by baby pushing the nipple. Because baby would not suckle, my nipple is just in her mouth. I don’t think I have oversupply. After I bottle feed her she was finally able to fall asleep after feeding. On the other hand, when I breast feed her, she’d fall asleep while nursing as if she was tired more than as if she was full. I assume she doesn’t get the hind milk not that often? Then she would take a nap on my laps until I burp her. That’s why I want to pump my milk and give my baby the whole nutrition. But she poops almost every day. With poop diapers it is about or more than 6. A pediatrician has diagnosed her at three months. The tongue tie is not that bad, according to the doc. At 6 months she would take a look at my baby. Would you suggest single pump or full automatic pump? The price is very different. Whatever pump I choose I’d like to power pump to increase my supply. Because my baby still nurses every 2-3 hours not 3-4 hours as I hoped.

      @@margemellow5022 Our milk supply is never stable on its own. If you don’t move milk, your body gets a message that you’re not wanting much milk. If you want to fully breastfeed her when you’re home, you will need to be pumping at work. Remember this phrase. “If something goes into baby, something should come out of me” You can skip the pumping at work but in a week or two, there will start to be a drop. If you don’t want to pump at work, you can partially formula feed at home too but it’s important to stay consistent on times that you feed formula. Feed formula at those times of day that baby received while you were at work. If you give formula at random times and are nursing or pumping at different times every day, your body will think that you need less. When you’re combination feeding, you might worry that your supply is too low but just remember to count wet diapers. @@lacygill9969 I’m actually making a video about that today 🥰 but… it won’t probably post for a week or so. How old is baby? Do you exclusively feed from the breast at home? How many ounces are you pumping per hour while you are away from baby? And how long are usually away from baby? I’m not a fan of a wearable pump unless a mom has a forceful letdown/over supply. If you pump it all you need to add lots of breast massage for stimulation to make enough breastmilk. If you’re using a wearable pump, you just have to be sure that you’re taking the time to do lots and lots of breast massage and some breast compressions while you’re pumping. You should be pumping about one to 1 1/2 ounces an hour while you’re away from baby. So you should be seeing about 8 to 12 ounces pumped if you are away from baby for eight hours. Often moms will tell me that their baby takes in much more than that. If baby were feeding directly from the breast, they wouldn’t be taking in as much because the bottle just pours out into baby’s mouth. But the time baby realizes that they’re full they have actually over eaten . It won’t hurt baby to over eat but it’s a wasted amount. Sometimes it’s nearly impossible for Mom to pump out that extra amount to be wasted. ❤️

I know that it’s our reaction to want more than perfection.🤷‍♀️ Mothers milk tea is popular and you can definitely try it but for me, I see it as a placebo affect for most moms. This can hurt a mom’s supply if she’s just waiting to see an increase in supply. Those 3 keys are what works. Here’s a link to read more on Moringa. There are different study findings. And there are possible health risks. www.drugs.com/breastfeeding/moringa.html As far as I know, Omeprazole isn’t know to decrease supply. Always be sure to tell your doctor that you are breastfeeding. Here’s what Dr Hale’s research on it says. Omeprazole is a potent inhibitor of gastric acid secretion. In a study of one patient receiving 20 mg omeprazole daily, the maternal serum concentration was negligible until 90 minutes after ingestion and then reached 950 nM at 240 min.[1] The breast milk concentration of omeprazole began to rise minimally at 90 minutes after ingestion and peaked after 180 minutes at only 58 nM, or less than 7% of the highest serum level. This would indicate a maximum dose of 3 µg/kg/day in a breastfed infant. Omeprazole milk levels were essentially flat over 4 hours of observation. Omeprazole is extremely acid labile with a half-life of 10 minutes at pH values below 4.[2] Virtually all omeprazole ingested via milk would probably be destroyed in the stomach of the infant prior to absorption. Adult Concerns Headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, flatulence, changes in liver and renal function, anemia. Adult Dose 20 mg twice daily. Pediatric Concerns No complications reported from milk currently, but does not exclude potential risk. Infant Monitoring Unlikely to be absorbed while dissolved in milk due to instability in acid.

      @ Ok. Here I just copied the text 😎 Caffeine is a naturally occurring CNS stimulant present in many foods and drinks. While the half-life in adults is 4.9 hours, the half-life in neonates is as high as 97.5 hours. The half-life decreases with age to 14 hours at 3-5 months and 2.6 hours at 6 months and older. The average cup of coffee contains 100-150 mg of caffeine depending on preparation and country of origin. Peak levels of caffeine are found in breastmilk 60-120 minutes after ingestion. In a study of five patients following an ingestion of 150 mg caffeine, peak concentrations of caffeine in serum ranged from 2.39 to 4.05 µg/mL and peak concentrations in milk ranged from 1.4 to 2.41 mg/L with a milk/serum ratio of 0.52.[1] The average milk concentration at 30, 60, and 120 minutes post dose was 1.58, 1.49, and 0.926 mg/L, respectively. In another study of seven breastfeeding mothers who consumed 750 mg caffeine/day for 5 days, and were 11-22 days postpartum, the average milk concentration was 4.3 mg/L.[2] Values ranged significantly from undetectable to 15.7 mg/L. The mean concentration of caffeine in sera of the infants on day 5 was 1.4 µg/mL (range undetectable to 2.8 µg/mL). In two patients whose milk levels were 13.4 and 28 mg/L, the respective infant serum levels were 0.25 and 3.2 µg/mL. In a study of six breastfeeding mothers who received one dose of 100 mg orally, peak levels (Cmax) in maternal serum ranged from 0.5 to 1 hour and 0.75 to 2 hours in milk.[3] The maternal plasma Cmax ranged from 3.6 to 6.15 µg/mL, while the Cmax for their milk ranged from 1.98 to 4.3 mg/L. The average concentration of caffeine in milk was 2.45 mg/L at 1 hour. The average milk/plasma ratio (AUC) was 0.812 for both breasts. This elegant study shows that caffeine rapidly enters milk and that the decay of caffeine in milk is similar to that of plasma. In infants from 4 to 7 kg body weight, the estimated dose to the infant would be 1.77 to 3.10 mg/d following a 100 mg maternal dose. In a group of mothers who ingested from 35 to 336 mg of caffeine daily, the level of caffeine in milk ranged from 2.09 to 7.17 mg/L.[4] The author estimates the dose to infant is at 0.01 to 1.64 mg/d or 0.06% to 1.5% of the maternal dose. An interesting review of the nutritional effects of caffeine ingestion on infants is provided by Nehlig.[5] There is some evidence that chronic coffee drinking may reduce the iron content of milk. Irritability and insomnia may occur and have been reported.[6] Occasional use of caffeine is not contraindicated, but persistent, chronic use may lead to high plasma levels in the infant particularly during the neonatal period.

      @@Shay2020. Pumping moms get extra gold stats from me because pumping is a lot of extra work. ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️ You did an amazing job mommy! ❤️ Your situation would be a great video for me to do. 24 ounces every 24 hours is on average, what an exclusively breastfed baby who is eating from the breast takes in. ❤️ Your next thought is probably: “My baby was still hungry”. Here’s a couple of things to understand: Paced Feeding is usually needed for babies who are receiving breastmilk from a bottle. This is a method of slowing down a feeding to mimic breastfeeding. I’ll link a video here for you. When baby eats at the breast, they usually take several minutes longer to eat. Moms who feed directly from the breast, don’t know that baby is taking in just 24 ounces a day. When baby eats quickly from a bottle, they take in more than they need or want. You can’t over feed your baby. Giving extra to baby (when not Pace Fed) will just be wasted. Baby’s body will pee, poop or spit it out. Though a pumping mom’s body, often can’t keep up with that extra amount taken in. The evening feedings often get stressful for moms who pump AND for moms who chest feed. Baby will cluster feed and be very fussy. They may seem hungry but aren’t. They are either, overly tired, over stimulated or just hurting all over. It’s painful to grow so quickly. This is a time of day that Paced Feeding is really important. We do want to be sure that baby is getting enough. The way that we know that baby is taking in enough is by counting wet diapers. As long as baby is having 6 or more wet diapers every 24 hours and is growing well, you know that baby is getting enough. Exclusively breastfed babies will take in that 24 ounces every 24 hours, from the time they are one month to six months old. From 6 to 12 months some baby stay around that amount and some will take in a few more ounces a day. I know that that sounds crazy That a growing baby wouldn’t be taking in more but breast milk is just utilize differently and more completely in baby’s body as they age. Formula fed babies need more and more as they age because their body doesn’t absorb as much of those nutrients so they need more. Formula fed babies usually poop more often and have much larger poops. It’s good, when possible, for mom to increase milk supply to 2 or 3 ounces extra a day to store incase there is an emergency need for extra milk. The very best way to increase supply when pumping is to add lots and lots of breast massage. I’ll link a video on that here too. I hope all of that makes sense. We don’t know, what we don’t know. The internet and doctors (and sometimes even lactation counselors) don’t understand this. We see babies who are formula fed and compare breastmilk feeding to that but it’s so different. ❤️ Paced Feeding th-cam.com/video/NIDWewaslOQ/w-d-xo.html Pumping Moms With Low Milk Supply th-cam.com/video/_of4OTnOubc/w-d-xo.html

There are so many details to know and understand with your condition. Breastfeeding rules won’t apply for you, many can make things worse. Whatever you do, it has to be done slowly. You will need to slowly transition to a block feeding. It’s important to keep pumping to a minimum BUT pump enough to keep your engorgement at a minimum. You may have to wake in the night for a while to pump a little. Then apply cold compresses. It’s going to be good if you can feed on one side only, but you’ll still (and maybe occasionally in the future) need to pump on the side not nursed on. Over time it will become less engorged. Check out these videos and tell me what you think. The first video will just help you to know the signs that you see are caused by OS/ FL. Then the 2nd video will help you to get it under control. It does take time, so be patient. Forceful Letdown and Oversupply th-cam.com/play/PLbqc4bXQcbyUzyNxG-w7tBtKLWA3NpzLe.html

      @@dr.roopasree hi mommy! I’m sorry that things have been rough. How old is baby now? Baby has never latched well without the shield correct? When you were having pain with the shield on, was the pain just while nursing or did it still hurt between feedings? When baby did latch well, that shows us that baby can latch. Babies can go into a nursing strike. This can happen when baby and mom are stressed during a feeding. Being forced can be stressful for some babies. Have you pumped breastmilk? If so, about how much do you get per pumping?

    I know this is an old video.. but I liked your vid very much and want to get some clarity on my problem. I hv a 2 month old baby and she is mostly bottle fed bcoz of my low milk supply. I have PCOS and is 35+. Tried breastfeeding my baby but my LO wud nurse on each breadt for about 20 mins while feeling sleepy and then wud sleep for 10 mins and then wake up and demand more. I was not able to keep up with tge demand and resorted to bottle.What can I do to improve this behavior? Also when I pump I get really low milk (10-15 ml ) combined from both breast and it pains😊

      @@JusticePhoenix hi mommy! Was your milk supply good in the first month? Did you need to supplement then? When you pump 10 to 15 mils, is that soon after baby nursed or has it been a couple of hours. Is baby content with breastfeeding in the morning but not in the afternoon or evening?

      @JusticePhoenix 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @marycahillclc my milk supply was not enough in the first month as well.. baby sometimes seems content with my milk supply in the morning but never in the evening. Actually, the baby mostly slept on my lap in the first month whenever i tried to feed, i wud try to wake her up but failed everytime and then when i wud put her down in her cot, she wud cry.

      @@JusticePhoenix I have a couple of videos for you to watch. They can help to increase supply but if you didn’t have milk in the first weeks, you probably won’t be able to fully breastfeed. I’m not completely sure that you won’t be able to fully breastfeed. If possible, it would be good for you to meet with a local lactation counselor. Quite often babies will be fussy in the evening because they are overly tired, over stimulated or hurting from growing so quickly. This can look like low supply but not actually be. If baby seems satisfied in the morning and afternoon but not in the evening, it’s usually a sign that supply is good. It’s important that you always see 6 or more wet diapers every 24 hours. If you are pumping after a feeding and getting just 10 to 15mls, this is very normal. If you are pumping that amount in place of a feeding, that is low. @@chaithrahsshivanna2507 so sorry mommy😢. Follow the steps in the video. It’s very important to offer the breast at every feeding but to stop right away when baby starts to fuss. It’s important that you and baby do not get upset. Do you know if you have a forceful letdown/over supply? When a mom has this condition it will often cause baby to have reflux and it can quite often cause baby to go into a nursing strike. If that might be the case, then I need to get you some information on that.❤️ If you haven’t heard of forceful letdown/overly before. Here’s my three part video series on the condition. @ I wouldn’t do that. I think that it would make it worse. He doesn’t need to forget that he’s afraid, he just needs to get used to it slowly and without pressure. If you were afraid of something, (like maybe animal or driving a car), you will start to get comfortable with it, if you are around it a lot but without being pressured. I hope that makes sense. ♥️
