  • A manual pump can be helpful for moms that pump occasionally and for exclusively pumping moms. A manual pump can sometimes remove more milk than an electric pump. Manuals pumping after using an electric pump can remove a little more milk at a pumping session. In this video, I’ll be using the Medela Harmony but this applies to any manual pump that you might have. You got this mommy!❤️

Thank you!! I just got this pump today because my son just started to latch now, but since I’ve been pumping he doesn’t fully empty me so this will be nice to use vs an electric pump for after his feeding

      How old is baby?
Often when a mom doesn’t feel like baby emptied the breast, it can actually be engorgement and a forceful letdown/over supply so I just want to caution you on over pumping.

Yeah, it is really tight in the beginning. You can take a tiny dab of nipple balm and rub it around the inside of that yellow piece where it would connect. Then when you put it on, it should be a little easier to go on and off. ❤️

I tried this for the first time last night and wasn’t having much luck.. I usually use a wearable pump. I’ll try again following your advice.

I have an inverted or flat nipple or one breast and I recently gave birth so baby has been struggling to latch on that side. I was advised to either use nipple shields to help with latching or a pump, to make sure I'm still releasing cause yeah, that breast is Hella full😭

Oh no! OUTCH! Gotta get that under control. Staying engorged is painful and can lead to clogged ducts that are even worse.
      Here’s my video on engorgement.
You need to not over pump but pump enough to get comfortable then apply lots of cold compresses.
How do I get rid of a Clogged Duct? Plugged duct relief.

I would pump that side. Pump for a few minutes then try to latch baby. Introducing a nipple shield can sometimes cause other problems.

When I pump, even for 30 minutes, i can still hand express and have milk squirt out. So i feel im possibly not getting fully emptied (therefore im not getting much milk..1-2oz in total throughout the day... 2-2.5oz at most with my first pump session of the day) i use this exact hand pump & the spectra 2. I sized my nipple and its 15mm.. so I have been using a 17mm silicone insert. .. am I wrong in the size im using ? Could this be reason im not getting much milk output? I have tried eating more, eating certain foods, drinking body armour, coconut water , drinking plenty of water .. ive also pumped around the clock every 2-3 hours with power pumping sessions... ive tried only pumping once or twice a day.. all these things and getting the same output every time... do u have any advice for me???

Totally forget about eating or drinking something special to make more milk. It’s not at all helpful. For moms that say that it is, it’s a placebo effect or the mom has a natural forceful let down/over supply. Yes, breastmilk is 80% water but it’s not made from the contents of your stomach (What you eat or drink). Breastmilk is actually made from your white blood cells. You would need to be extremely dehydrated for it to affect your milk supply at all. Drink enough for your body to be healthy. If you’re thirsty, then you need to drink more water.
Trying to pump less often so that your breasts “fill up”, will lower your milk supply after a few days of doing this. Thats more bad advice shared on the Internet.
Milk isn’t stored in your breasts, it’s produced as you nurse or pump.
Did we chat once before on a different video?

      Are you an exclusive pumper?
How many ounces have you been able to pump total every 24 hours?

      @marycahillclc
I pump maybe 3 times a day at this point... only getting about 6 oz in 24 hours... but any time i pump i can seem to squeeze almost the same amount out by hand expressing after pumping from what i noticed yesterday... im super discouraged as im wanting to be able to store some to bottle feed and to have stored for milk baths, etc .. id be grateful just to get 5oz in my pump sessions. But as of now i only get about 1-2 oz when i do pump. I have cut back a lot on pumping because it seemed like it was starting to put me into a depression due to such a low output.
I'm 5 weeks pp .. and i do nurse but having to supplement formula right now which i definitely hate having to do.

@@jacieallen9474 Were you able to fully breast-feed without supplementing in the beginning?
Did you start supplementing because baby seemed hungry or because baby wasn’t having enough wet diapers?
You can usually get out more milk by hand expressing than by pumping. Especially for Mom with elastic nipples or having trouble sizing a flange.
Is pumping ever uncomfortable? You could try a smaller flange size as long as it’s not hurting. Milk production can definitely be increased with a better fitting flange. We measure the nipple width but that’s not always the best flange for Mom. Sometimes we have to try other sizes.
In order to see more milk produced, you need to be pumping on a regular basis, and at around the same time every day. Keep in mind that you will always have more milk in the first half of the day than you do in the second half.
Along with pumping at the same time every day, it’s important to add lots and lots of breast massage, but applying heat before the massage often helps to have a let down sooner.
