    Brilliant! What a great explanation and why did I never think to do my gauge swatch like that? I have cut mine, so it looks like a scrappy hedgehog by the end and all the yarn is wasted. Looking forward to the rest of the series. 🧶

    First of all, thank you for sharing your knowledge and skills. ❤️🙏 I have been a knitter since I was in the womb (at least, that’s what it feels like), and I’ve been knitting socks forever. But never have I come across a nostepinner, which, I think as others have commented, is a game changer. I often use 2 strands together for thicker socks, so this is a game changer for me, too. I do, however, keep the specifics of each foot I knit for, but not in the organised way you do. I love your practical approach. I’ve learned so much in this short video. I knit cuff down, but can see SO many advantages to toe up. However, I struggle with circular needles for socks. Which is weird, because I knit other items on circs - in the round and flat - so maybe it’s just a ‘head thing’ for me. Anyway, I am really looking forward to Part 2. Take care, lovely K3n ❤️

    • @k3n.clothtales
      @k3n.clothtales 12 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      The principle is the same but I think it's easier as you can turn the nostepinne through 360 degs, which you can't do with your thumb. 😁❤️

      I wonder where you get your yarn from? I used to buy premium local merino wool. But now that I've been slow stitching and using reclaimed cloth, I dont know how I put so much money into yarn. I would like to use reclaimed yarn but I'm not sure where to start.

    • @k3n.clothtales
      @k3n.clothtales 12 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      There is a little wool shop run by a woman who spins and dyes her own wool in England near my friends house where I stay when I visit. She also sells commercial yarn, some from local, small businesses. I honestly can't remember where I got these little bits from, though I think they are pure wool and alpaca by the feel of them so they won't wear that well in socks. My biggest issue is that I find socks have to include some nylon or they wear out in no time. I think using thrifted sock reinforcement thread is maybe the most 'eco' thing to do but I do have quite a few balls of commercial sock yarn to use up which has a percentage of nylon in it. I also buy wool for fair isle etc from a mother daughter company here in France. I have unraveled thrifted sweaters to reknit in the past and it's quite a task. Getting your own goats or sheep would be a great way to go. 😂❤️

      There is much to learn from the 'new' ways of knitting but the old ways have their place too don't they? Apart from anything else, it's lovely to keep them alive. I have tried to teach my daughter to knit but she never took to it, though she likes to crochet. My son has asked about knitting occasionally because he finds it fascinating so I perhaps I will try and teach him, the Aunty Lily, Granny Ina method of course. 😁❤️

    This is probably the twentieth re-watching for me, but it occurred to me to ask - because i'm having issues of my own - how do you get the tension to make it look honeycomb-ish without puckering the cloth? Mine always end up changing my fabric! I LOVE the piece you show in the book - so so so gorgeous

    • @k3n.clothtales
      @k3n.clothtales 23 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Hello Nancy, you might enjoy Monday's video, spoiler alert 😁 regarding the puckering, one way is to work on a sound backing, for example some wool felt or flannel behind your top cloth. Many use a hoop though I don't because I don't enjoy the process of stitching through a hoop. Otherwise it's just practice I am afraid, pulling the stitches gently so they lay flat but not taut. ❤️

    • @k3n.clothtales
      @k3n.clothtales วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hello, not stupid at all. 😉 Some people have different tension when they purl instead of knitting, when knitting in the round, you don't purl for stockinette so this way of knitting a swatch mimics knitting in the round. Hope that's clear 😉❤️

    Thank you Kathryn! Can you repeat the names of that wooden yarn winding tool? I bought one in a box of old thread and lace at a junk shop in Ottawa last summer. Finally! Someone who casts on and knits the same way that I do. I think it must be a generational thing because my Nana (born in 1898) taught me. I've tried to copy the fluid, speedy way of others on many tutorials but my fingers won't join in. I didn't know I am a thrower 😁. Just giving it a name legitimizes it as a method so I am happy. Love the "2 strands at a time" knitting. It's a game changer. Ditto the cardboard feet. I now feel cautiously optimistic that I might become a sock knitter. I've knitted everything else but socks have always eluded me...until now. Thank you Kathryn. Mary x

      My pleasure Mary, yes I learnt the terminology of thrower or picker on the internet. Also referred to as English style or continental. For years of course, I didn't know there was another way. I can now 'pick' with the wool in my left hand but for some bizarre reason, only when knitting fairy isle, when I have one colour in each hand. When I use only one colour, I go back to what I have been doing for fifty plus years. 😂 I am certain you can knit socks, hope you enjoy it if you give it a try. ❤️

    I am not a knitter - too many good knitters have cringed at my leftie attempts. I do go from left needle onto right needle, so I do ask myself " what's the problem? " But only yesterday, mooching around the charity shop, I picked up 'Knitting for Dummies', some yarn and needles, all for the princely sum of 50p. So, here's to something else I can do with my hands. ( I nearly said 'fingers crossed ' -but maybe not.

      I am 55 years young and a leftie. Have made a few attempts at knitting through the years without success. Then I read that lefties may find Norwegian style knitting easier to pick up. Have been having some modest success following tutorials from Arne and Carlos' channel. Best of luck!

      @@Ellie-yx8ni I never learned to knit properly as a child but was taught by my left handed friend when I was a good age. She had been taught to knit (right handed) by her crafty aunt who sounded similar to k3n’s Aunt Lily. She taught me that same cast on and to knit by throwing. It is really good to see some of us still knit that way.

    I have purchased several packets of sashiko needles to play with and I have two favorites. Be sure that you get sashiko LONG needles.... they also come in short for stitching curves. But for rows of straight running stitches, you need the long sashiko needles. My two favorites are Daruma Sashiko Needle Long Type (a pack of 3 needles of different lengths is $5.99 on U.S. Amazon at the moment) and Clover Sashico Needles Long (yes.. that's how it is spelled. Pack of 3 $7.25) They are both good. Both Daruma and Clover are well known Japanese brands. The Clover needles have slightly larger eyes than the Daruma. The size of the eye that you need is dependent on the thickness of the thread that you are using..... Just an FYI from someone, Kathryn, who has been inspired by your introduction... to me... of Boro and Sashiko. I have no interest in doing the precise Sashiko patterns. I haven't got the patience for that. But my favorite stitch for slow stitching is the running stitch, so it is interesting to play with the Japanese method of doing running stitches for Boro/Sashiko and to be able to borrow bits and pieces of the formal Sashiko patterns in my slow stitching pieces.........

      Thank you Susan, I agree with you about the running stitch, it's my favourite too. Maybe one day, I will pick up some sashiko needles and a thimble and try the traditional way. It looks so soothing and rythmical when I watch sashiko masters doing it. ❤️

I am an avid sock knitter, I must have made well over a hundred pairs, I've also made socks for hubby too, so much so that i dont even use a pattern anymore lol. I use either Chiaogoo or HiyaHiya needles, 2mm. I start off with Judy's Magic Cast On (I've never tried Nathan's version, I must have a look!) and finish with Jeni's Surprisingly Stretch Bind Off. The heels are just short row. I also throw my yarn, although when in knit Fair Isle I use both hands and continental. I've never knitted two at a time, but I really must try it....I suffer terribly from second sock syndrome! Thank you again, I'm really looking forward to seeing the rest of them x

Small balls of suitable yarns are amassed and swapped so each participant has 24 to knit a stripe a day during December - hoping to achieve a pair by Xmas. Not my thing as nobody I know would want to wear socks made by me - me included!! I have a nostepinne! Now I know what it is - thanks to you!! My son gave me it along with a few vintage spools and weaving tools! I do have a ball winder which is super simple but I’ll now have a go with the nostepinne.

      Bit more research! It seems my nostepinne is not one! Although the same shape, mine has a hole through it which would have fitted over the pin in a shuttle and would have held the weft. It is therefore a “pirn” which you also mentioned.
