  • In this video I share how I made a tie on pocket inspired by images from the book The Pocket A Hidden History of Women's Lives by Barbara Burman and Ariane Fennetaux
Here's a link to Marion's tutorial on how she makes a skirt with a split side seam to access her own tie on pocket

Kathryn I bet when your Dad wore his pyjamas, he never imagined for a moment that people all over the world were going to see parts of them one day. The thought tickled my fancy.

It reminds me of the poem, Dangerous Coats:
    Dangerous Coats
    Someone clever once said
    Women were not allowed pockets
    In case they carried leaflets
    To spread sedition
    Which means unrest
    To you & me
    A grandiose word
    For commonsense
    Fairness
    Kindness
    Equality
    So ladies, start sewing
    Dangerous coats
    Made of pockets & sedition
    Sharon Owens
😊 Let's all stitch our own pockets, and fill them with sedition! Thanks for this lovely video, Katherine x

This pocket is beautiful but what I really enjoyed was hearing about how pockets were not put in women's clothing. I never gave it much thought and it's so interesting that of course women figured out how to make that adjustment and add their own pockets! Go women GO! LOL

I think this will turn into Biscornu Mark 2 - neutral pockets, matching pockets, gardening/cleaning/dog walking/gift pockets etc. It's a shame you can't patent this - you would be rich!

My husband & I are nonfashionable (afashionable?) people who have used fanny packs for most of our adult lives. Alternatively, I have a small (about 7" square) cross body bag made with RFI fabric in the middle layer that I either have slung across my body or in a back pack. I love having my hands free and I hate lugging a traditional purse. I might try making this with a gusset, so it's more roomy, but I think at heart, the fanny pack evolved from this waist pocket idea. I have one traditional navy blue handbag I've had for 40 years and use when I have to look proper for a formal occasion otw it's a modern pocket fanny pack! Thanks k3n!

Love your pocket! During the pandemic when I would have to go out to buy groceries I felt so frustrated by all the extra gear I needed plus the worry of purse snatching. I had made one of these a few years back. I really like how yours turned out! The top fabric and stitching really added something special. What I didn’t enjoy as much which I saw you with the same issue is the center slit for the hand hole it’s kinda awkward to slide hand in and to reach the back side of the picket without contorting your arm. I’m gonna try your style scrap fabric and make my slit from the bottom of the 6” point to the outer edge where the tie begins so that the hand has a comfortable slide in and out and is able to reach anything comfortably witching the picket, kinda like any other side pocket in skirts pants etc. Hope it looks good that way too!

That’s lovely! Brings to mind Sharon Owen’s poem called Dangerous Coats……

Very nice 😊 reminds a bit about the waist bags that were so popular during 1990-s. I myself wear mostly dresses and most often they don’t have any pockets so maybe I’ll give it a try 🥰

Absolutely wonderful Kathryn! I’ve been eyeing that book for years, but just have never squeezed it in. I love the pocket you made. Thanks for showing us the whole process. Hope it gets filled with lots of wonderful treasures!

Thank you Tracy, it will probably get filled with what I consider treasure (random bits of stuff I pick up from the ground) one woman's trash is another woman's treasure, right 😁❤️

I do have that book as well, I’m slowly reading it when I have the chance. It makes me feel connected to all the women of the past.
    Great job from California!

Thank you, I agree about the feeling of connection, although the times were different, I find myself relating to the lives of the women. ❤️

Wow, Kathryn, you’d be an excellent model for a fashion show! Your pocket stands out in your black clothes and we see it perfectly! It’s so beautiful 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I don’t like to wear trousers, I like to wear skirts and dresses and, of course, they have no pockets (I only have one that has them!), so this is a great idea. Now, beware of the mice 🐭😆🩵💛💚🩷🤎❤️💛💙💜🤍🧡

Merci K3n ❤❤❤❤
