An interesting end to your piece of art. I don’t quite know what my ‘back story’ would be. Maybe I wd call it ‘a road well traveled’. I too learned from a teacher in Primary school but my Principal was my mother. We always lived in very remote, coastal places and winter nights were ideal for sewing. Mummy taught me to make my ‘backs’ as good as the fronts and to this very day I do this….and enjoy it. It’s second nature to me, the back looks slightly different to the front … I cd turn a piece upside down and not notice at all. I remember, when I was about 8, I stitched my piece of embroidery to my school skirt….. I can see it now….. not just a few stitches, a lot. It was a gingham dressing table cloth, yellow with red thread. My teacher was incandescent with rage and sent me home with the embroidery hanging from under my coat. I remember my burning cheeks and all the other children laughing at me. Daddy, who had walked, with bike, to meet me and give a lovely ride home, scooped me up and sat me on the crossbar, in a flash I was home. I’ve never forgotten that day, such opposing levels of behaviour from important people in my life. My parents asked me all about it and mummy just unpicked the offending piece of cloth from my skirt. The next day I went to school with a short note from my parents and the embroidery was never mentioned again. I remember, to this very day, how it felt to be humiliated…..over a bit of embroidery!!!! I never felt the same about that teacher and feared her for the rest rest of my day at that school. I’m VERY careful about hand held sewing!!! Other teachers were enjoyable people and did their jobs well but my parents were my best and favourites. A happy childhood and so far (76) a happy life. Still love to sew, knit etc etc. can’t garden anymore and this is my true sorrow but I watch what’s happening out there, spot the first snowdrops ,primroses, bluebell. All my old friend peeping from where I planted them 50 years ago.

I stitched my cloth to my hand the other day, just skimming in and out one stitch before I noticed. But being humiliated by a teacher must have been horrible. That only happened to me once and it was my dad, the village school head teacher. I don’t know what got into him that day, but when he had overdone his “don’t show favouritism” thing with me he did used to say sorry at home, and that made it all right. He did his best to be fair, and in those days I did not always try to be good all the time!

I am so sorry for you, what a horrible thing to happen. Childhood humiliations stay with us, teachers should appreciate more the power and therefore the responsibility they have. I am so happy that your parents were able to make you feel better about it. Gosh I am sorry, I feel so bad for little 8 year old you. ❤️❤️❤️

I am enjoying your videos. Your voice is calming. My mom watches with me and she is legally blind and loves to sit super close to my tv and listen to you. We have 3 dogs here in Kentucky USA. I will start my piece this evening when I have some time. I will get mom started with a piece as well. I don’t see why she can enjoy stitching even if she cant zone in. She can do random meditation pieces for relaxation.

Oh you are cheeky but I will comply with the prompt to show the back of my piece! I did gasp a little when you said you were going to sew it down in such a way that you couldn't flip it over to even see the front. I actually love the way you challenge us to let go and focus on the process - it is rather humbling. As to favorite books I've read again and again Watership Down tops that list followed closely by Jane Eyre. My most recent "didn't want it to end" read was a Gentleman in Moscow-such a lovely book. And since my life has been taken over by slow stitching, I've been enjoying audio books , most especially Homecoming by Kate Morton read by the amazing Claire Foy. Thank you again for a wonderful video !

@@karenproctor9901 it has been said before 😁 I have read a book by Kate Morton, the Lake House I think but not Homecoming. I will add it to my list. Love Claire Foy also, she was fabulous in the Crown. And someone else recommended a Gentleman in Moscow so that's already on my list. Watership Down and Jane Eyre both make my top ten too. ❤️

Hi Kathryn, I love your scroll it’s fab and is helping me make decisions about “letting go”. Your top from the charity shop I fully understand. I bought 2x pure wool jumpers for a £1.00 from a charity shop about 25 years ago. One is in pinks and purples and the other is turquoise and greens.I love them and I have worn them every winter. They are now quite scruffy but whenever I wear them people compliment me. I think if you love a garment and it makes you happy, whenever you wear it, it will make you shine. If there comes a day when they are just too scruffy to wear then I will felt them and make something with them so their story will go on. You always make me feel less insane 😂😂😂 thank you. Xx❤

The moss on the tree and the woods are so beautiful. As for reading, I generally have several going at the same time: one that I read before bed and another daytime book - generally nonfiction - that I like to dip into now and then. I call that my "Sunday morning book as I usually try to take time late on Sunday morning to read a bit. I prefer to read a real book but do use the library's electronic system for audiobooks. I often have an audio book that I listen while knitting or sometimes while cooking.

I started out collecting actual books. Then I discovered the Kindle app on my phone. Now, for various boring reasons, I rely on Audiobooks. I LOVE the sounds of my dog snoring. A long time ago, after my husband had passed, the sounds of my cocker spaniel snoring at night comforted me and lulled me to sleep. I currently have an old dog that snores through the night and a young chihuahua that does an adorable little sleepy moan from time to time in the night. ❤️

I could listen to your wittering for hours. One of my favorite children’s book I read to my son is “Chicken Soup with Rice”. Loved that book. Loved the walk in your woods but had to look away several times as I’m prone to vertigo with too much movement in videos. Lovely area to walk through. Oh my,I just paused this video to watch the Scottish Granny read “The Wonky Donkey”. I haven’t laughed this Hardin a long while. Thank you for that I needed it. 😂😂. One book I have read several times is “A Year by the Sea” by Joan Anderson. I have to have a physical book in my hand when I read.

A Wonderful walk in the woods - put me in a lovely mood to start stitching. THEN I heard the words EXAM stabbed my finger and the horror of exams caused a panic and a blood spot on my linen back. I had to stop the video and listen carefully to what you said! Phew No exam.... Then when you told me it was the back we were mounting, I had a little chuckle to myself...Trixie Katherine... you really got to me this week, I've left my DNA there on the back as my story! Okay. Your comments on books really spoke to me. Because this past year I read through George MacDonald's corpus of fiction following publication date (as ordered by Michael Phillips in The Cullen Collection.) While desiring to give each book the service it deserved, I nonetheless was task-driven to press on through them all with the purpose of appreciating the author himself as he grew and aged right alongside of and within his works. For second read throughs though, I am choosing them one at a time, getting to know the characters, understand their choices, watch them as they grow and being on journey with them as their stories unfold. A well-written book can take you to deeper places each time it is read. I'll be in MacDonald for years to come but always keep a non-fiction and Scripture in the mix. Love resonating with this backstory/journey theme.

Thank you k3n for a wonderful walk in your woodland -oh the colours-and an equally lovely meander through petal and leaf as I followed the path your needle and thread made through the textile. How will it be to let me own backstory emerge once I begin to stitch my own piece, I am wondering. I enjoy the process of seeing what comes up for me as I stitch. I am remembering my late mother teaching me in childhood how the back has to be as good as the front-impossible for me to achieve. Something I ve had to let go of yet the echo remains. Let s see what happens between resistance and subversion :-) re books-devoured them voraciously as a child , more than 8 books a week at times. I was quite isolated as a child so they were a world I could escape to and inhabit. Life now is very busy and though I do read novels when I have a bit of free time I mostly read non fiction between breaks in work and family life. I cannot resist wanting to know and to understand and learn. Our house is full of books even though I almost always pass novels on for others to enjoy once I have read them. During busy times I download books on my phone and listen to them while I am stitching or cooking and during those sleepless patches in the night where my mind is otherwise tempted toward the downside of “philosophical”…. Oh and usually my OH and I take it in turns to read a book out loud to each other, a chapter a day over a cup of tea in the morning. It really is a lovely thing to do if you re into books and happen to share a space with someone else who loves them too. xxx

How lovely to share books with your husband. Mine isn't much of a reader sadly. I like how you put it, between resistance and subversion, it's sometimes challenging when we connect so personally with our stitching but always something to be learnt I think and hopefully, on balance, it's uplifting. 8 books a week was a lot, I read a lot too but don't think it was ever quite that many 😁 A house full of books is a wonderful thing. ❤️❤️❤️

And to answer your interesting questions, I love paper books. Outside of reference books, I skip around a lot to different genres, depending on my mood. Books hit me like music. I have to have it in my life for joy to exist and the beat can change. A modern author I love always is Anne Lamott and one book I grieved its end was “The Secret Life of Bees.” The list of awesome books is too long to list but I find the ability to lose ourselves in a story quite thrilling. What a beautiful place to have on your doorstep! As for books, me and partner are avid book lovers. But are completely opposite! When enjoying a book immensely, he gives himself an allowance each day. Whereas I can't put it down. We both prefer paper books, in particular used ones. Although I am unable to read actual books now, so I listen to audio books. When it became apparent I could no longer hold books or concentrate, I was utterly bereft. And so audio books are quite literally life saving. (Maybe sounds a little melodramatic, but that's how awful it felt). So now, whilst crafting I would listen. But am overjoyed to find TH-cam channels like yours to keep me company as well as books. ❤

I think that ‘back story’ is the real fiber that weaves the fabric of one’s life and gives one the strength to forge ahead & complete the journey. Oooh, your prompt Kathryn can make me philosophical all of a sudden😂.
Anyway, my 1st favorite book in my childhood: The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. Still loves it to this day. Fox to the Little Prince: “And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”

I like philosophical Tess, thank you 😊 I love the Little Prince, I think my son has it in French. As for the Austen, aside from the ones you mention, I also loved Emma. A bit of trivia, the BBC series of Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle was partly filmed on the farm of friends of mine. I have stood on the exact spot where Darcy finally proposed. 😁❤️

@@k3n.clothtales Wow! What a treat! For me, the BBC series with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle is the best adaptation ever. Now, whenever I see the series again, I’ll think of you in your friends’ farm standing behind Mr. Darcy as he proposes.🥰☺️Thank you for sharing that trivia. It brought me a smile. It’s a small world!
      Hugs to you, Kathryn.

Ok, I can appreciate your backstory! I read paper copies, second hand or library copies if I can get them, and share your favorite title as well. Thanks for the lovely videos.

Good morning Kathryn ❤️ as usual I was delighted to see a new video from you. And one that (as always) made me think and reflect 🥰🙏🏼 so thank you for your thoughts that you so generously share with us.
So what were the thoughts and reflections today? Well, it all started at the beginning of the video, on your walk through the forest. The forests in France are so different from our Swedish ones. Almost exclusively compounded by leaf trees they are much lighter both visually and in their energy. We have mostly evergreens and pines so our forests are much darker and have the kind of troll energy you cen see in John Bauer’s art.
I lived in France for a year in l’Essonne (the village of Valpuiseaux, just about an hour by train from Paris) and we called their forest The Fangorn 😉 here it is still weeks till the primroses will bloom 😊
Then I reflected on the interpretation of art … I am a linguist, I have Master’s degree in English and Swedish and I speak 6 languages fluently. I LOVE languages and books and knowing and learning new things in general. In 2015 I published my first book and I am currently working on the follow up. When I wrote I was of course considering the message and my readers, but mostly I just had to write. The texts lived all days in my head, and in the evening I just had to write them down or else my head would get too full as well 😉 Then it got published and I recieved responce from my readers. I could never have imagined all the things they interpreted into my texts … and then I realized that if you have 100 readers, you’ll have 100 versions of your book (or whatever art piece you’ve created) because every single person can only see what they have lived. They have their own frame of reference and it is their prerogative to interpret what they read. So when I create whatever it may be, I’m doing it for myself, even if I want to deliver a message. It’s still for my own sake. Then I have to release it to the Universe 😊
Very long comment. But here you see what your videos can mean to your subscribers ❤️ I really relate to so many things. I too love crafting of all sorts, I was fighting for the environment already at the beginning of the 1980, chaining myself to the railroad to stop them from poisoning the weeds. There is almost no plastic in my home. I live in a cabin in the North of Sweden, I have wooden stove, I grow my own vegetables, I chop wood, I pick mushrooms and herbs … and I have dye bath’s in the fridge 🤣🤣
Enough of me rambeling, I know you have other things to do than read a novel in your comments 🥰 It just made me realize how much we have in common. Hugs and lots of love from your favourite Bohemian in the Swedish woods 😘❤️🙏🏼
PS: the Czech word for potatoes is BRAMBORY 😊

Thank you so much for your 'novel' it was lovely to read. I especially love your reflection on the nature of art, yes the audience adds multiple layers of meanings to the story . Your forest sounds beautiful. Our woods are very young, I think our eldest tree isn't much more than 100 , not remotely Fangorn. Have a beautiful day much love ♥️

When I was a child learning embroidery I was often told the back has to look as good as the front, was often asked why mine didn’t look like the front lol I said the front is a pretty picture that my brain in the back created see how hard my brain worked😊 ❤❤never did the instructor complain about how the back of my work looked again😂😂😂😊
I have a kindle love it but I also love real books love the feel of the paper and the smell, I enjoy both I guess😊
