That was such a romp down memory lane for me. My grandmother - a very upright Edwardian lady - was a fantastic needle worker. When I was 6 she decided it was time for me to learn how to darn socks. The same day she also taught me how to sew on buttons “properly”. My dear old dad came home from work that day to find all his socks had been carefully darned by me and I had also added a button to each toe. Grandma found it hysterical! Not so sure about dad! But amongst the needlework equipment I inherited from her was her darning mushroom, which she had inherited from her mother. And I have used it a lot over the years - and often considered adding a button to the toe for good measure.

This is therapy for me: my sister learned to darn from our mother, the 'proper' invisible way (oh, the agonies of an imperfect match, or misaligned weave!) I, being less perfectionist and secretly more rogue, ended up not even trying - this and many other things you show us each week. But now, watching how you approach things, especially your ethos of 'I was here', is giving me courage to do things my way, and thoroughly enjoy the process, and the results. Thank you for being you, and helping me be me 🤗

My son, made to sew a button on a school shirt, chose a bright thread. Then liked the quiet rebellion so much that he removed all the buttons and used colours to sew them back on. To my knowledge he was never in trouble for it at school. I, of course, applauded it 😂

An absolutely delightful video, TFS. It brought back memories of my mother teaching me to darn socks - I still have the darning egg. Precious memories. She knit argyle socks for my dad and kept them mended. It also reminded me of someone I worked with when I was in college. I have no idea why we were talking about socks and darning but he was adamant that he was never going to wear darned socks ever again, they reminded him of poverty and his unhappy childhood. It's so interesting how a topic, such as darned socks, can stir up such strong, yet different, emotions in people.

I’ve always wanted to knit myself a pair of socks but thought they were too complicated, I have just found an easy pattern so if I knit them I will know how to darn them when and if the need arises. I have never darned anything before but I do remember my Dad doing it. Another useful skill you have shared with us, thank you x

It’s always great to see the practical daily applications of these traditional needlework skills. It’s still “slow stitching”, you’re still doing running stitch, and you’re turning something, that could be seen as a chore by many, into an enjoyable “project” with an aesthetically pleasing result at the end of it…and, of course you’ve illustrated a way in which we can all contribute to sustainability and promote the “eco culture”. Have your children showed any interest in learning these basic skills at all?
BTW I’ve got several darning mushrooms, which I adore, and I’m a big fan of any tool that has a double use and keeps everything together. Big 👍 for the multiple project bag thing. It’s the only way I can work without getting my knickers in a twist trying to find what I need all of the time, having multiple things on the go at any one time. I’ve just started knitting net bags to use for this and use up all of my old squeaky acrylic yarns that I used when I was practicing my knitting technique.

Yes please to sock knitting videos. The darning was so relaxing to watch and brought back so many memories of 'make do and mend'. I remember when Woolworths started selling faux leather elbow patches, perforated around the edge for easy attachment to jumpers/sweaters. Hello Kathryn....thank you so much for the great video! I am an avid toe-up sock knitter and knit all my and my husband's socks. I've never done two at a time....maybe one day! I don't knit scrappy socks, but I do knit the toes, heels and cuffs in different colours. I have literally boxes of scraps and ball ends of sock yarn......if you ever run out, let me know! Lol
Although I do many crafts, including spinning and weaving, I have only recently come across slow stitching and in particular your channel, and I am hooked! It has come at the right time, as I am due to have a major operation in June, so I am busy planning lots of little projects to keep me occupied! Keep up the good work!!

Funny enough this would not upset my tidy Virgo mind in any shape or form. Wonky personality obviously. We are coming out of a hot summer and I can feel my sock knitting itch. It is especially nice to know another body that loves wearing handmade socks. My friends don't really understand my love of handmade socks but that's ok. It would be a boring world if we all had the same likes or dislikes. Anyway I am waffling on. Thank you for chatting with me. I will now jump across to your Wonky Log Cabin video.
