I have not attempted hand piecing yet, but this makes me want to start. There are so many things to sew outside of quilts (and I enjoy my quilts). Satisfaction in work is not linear. I’m beginning to understand why this slow stitching has been a natural evolution for some. Thanks for the pleasant viewing.

OMG! I am watching you at 4 am an laughing so hard. My furbabies always lighten the mood in my happy place, of course, till I must stop and pet them. Then chase the out to play! I do so love the freedom of slow stitch. I am a machine piercer and longarm quilter for others which is much more rigid. Thank you so much for all you do.

The animal antics have me laughing. Much needed on this Monday morning. 😁 How wonderful that there are those with passion for things the rest of us overlook or take for granted. The Big Dipper is the only constellation I can find in the night sky!
the Big Dipper (or plough? I did not know that) in Dutch is called Grote Beer (Big Bear), the same as it's official name Ursus Major. There's a Kleine Beer (Little Bear) too, more difficult to find

I managed to keep up tonight, probably because as a patchwork quilter I knew what I was doing. Well I thought I did until I stitched the first HST to the outer square the wrong way. My star is now a mirror image of what was intended. But then as I always tell others, "It's not wrong, it's my interpretation of the pattern." As for stitching a constellation I had already stitched the Southern Cross, being in New Zealand, and decided to just leave it at that. Thank you K3n for another great week and I look forward to next week and starting a new scroll. (Pics in the FB group)

I love everything you do Kathryn. Having sewn on the machine all my life, you have inspired me to adopt this slower pace of hand stitching and I love it - you’re a guiding star. My favourite poet Rumi says it best: “A friend is a guiding star, illuminating the path to our destiny and helping us navigate the journey of life.” Thanks a million ⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is so beautifully meaningful. I don’t know anyone who likes any kind of art (the ones who did passed away already) and I feel quite lonely, not having anyone with whom I can share my things, my ideas, my thoughts, and instagram and TH-cam are a kind of “art family” for me. Hello Alexandra I hope it came across that I truly do think of you as friends. ❤️ England was great, I had a lovely time, my work is all safely delivered and our exhibition planning meeting went well. I managed to visit a couple of exhibitions (not the one my work is in, that will be in May), spend quality time with friends, have some takeaway food, and do a bit of charity shop shopping 😉 I hope to make a little video about my trip to share this Friday. ❤️❤️❤️

Katherine, I wanted to thank you for making 2024 a lovely adventure with slow stitching. My sister and I are both participating in your 52 week adventure. You mentioned your love of moss the other day and I wanted to share a lovely book with you. The book is Gathering Moss by Robin Wall Kimmerer. She also wrote an exceptional book, Braiding Sweetgrass. She and Suzanne Simard are two of my favorite authors. You may already have heard of Robin, if not enjoy.

I just loved this video for the stitching and for the laughter I had through much of the video being thoroughly entertained by the shenanigans of the dogs. I just kept thinking of my cat and how he likes to get up to mischief when I am stitching and not paying the attention he believes he deserves. Your Friendship star turned out great. So much thanks, as usual. You probably already know this, but Robin Wall Kimmerer's "Gathering Moss" is also excellent. My favorite part of Braiding Sweetgrass is when she asks her grad students, "How many of you would say that you love the earth?" and every hand went up. Then she followed up, "how many of you believe that the earth loves you back?" and every hand hesitated if it didn't immediately go back down. She goes on, "Knowing that you love the earth changes you, activates you to defend and protect and celebrate. But when you feel that the earth loves you in return, that feeling transforms the relationship from a one-way street into a sacred bond."
I have Gathering Moss as well. I remember the passage from Braiding Sweetgrass, it's indeed a life changing concept. ♥️
Hey from Texas kn3, I have learned with cats, it’s “If I fits, I sits”, no matter what it is😂😂. Animals do make life interesting, I was cross stitching in the recliner before I started watching this, and my littlest pup, Beau, decided he had to help, so he sat on my chest under my chin(he only weighs about 3lbs) and watched me, then wiggled down into my lap and played with the thread, wiggled under the pillow and went to sleep😂 Love your “wonky” or “scrappy” as I call it😊

I’ve been a long time quilter (machine). Spent years perfecting the straight line lol. Trying slow stitching this year ….isn’t it harder to ‘do’ a relaxed stitch .am so enjoying this series.
Yes indeed, it's tough to shake off the perfectionism. Nothing wrong with it if it makes you happy but can be quite stressful if it doesn't. 😁❤️

Being a clever girl and an experienced quilters I marked my diagonal line on my four squares, them marked the sewing line 1/4" on each side of the center line. Then I proceeded to sew a tidy backstitch right down the center line between the two sewing lines 😂 this fortunately made my laugh rather than weep. Tricksy little star, friends!
😂 oh I have done that many times, those drawn lines are just screaming at you to stitch on them 😉❤️

This was truely fun. I have to admit I had to trim a few times. And my star is a bit wonky, that was the fun. I made a mistake on one of my arms. On the bottom row, I did not see it till I thought I was finished. LOL. I had to redo the whole bottom row. HA HA. I had two arms going the same direction. That is the exploration of it all. Thank you K3n. It was great stitching for an afternoon. Love all the new friends we have all made on this journey of ours.

What a journey, once again, thank you! ❤You are so inspiring: not only the stiching, but poetry, stars, nature, dogs and cats, traveling. I love people being interested, curious especially these days when many of us feel that one's brains are too tired/ confused to really look for real things, real knowledge, books.
(It takes sometimes years for some books to be translated in my language in which sience text would be so much easier and often they are not translated at all. Not to mention that sience papers are written in English in many counties.)

I made this block by hand and it was too big. Soooo, I made another smaller one by machine (just to get it done). I am surprised to say, I like my hand stitched one better. I loved hand stitching as a girl and young adult, so I'm happy to be reminded that it is my first love. Loving these videos!!!!

If you love Entangled Life and Braiding Sweetgrass, may I recommend Underland by Robert MacFarlane, if you havent come across that already. As an artist-turned-ecologist I love all of Robert MacFarlane's books. And Merlin Sheldrake is one of the people he meets with in Underland!

Hello! I am a quilter, well actually more of a piecer, I have lots of quilt tops that need quilting. That said,I have a little box of little HSTs that were harvested whike making big quilts. Just got through watching this one a few days after you posted. I am tuning in from Greenville, SC and I just went on my library's website and all 4 copies of that book "Braiding Sweet Grass" published in 2013 no less, are checked out with 14 people on the wait list ahead of me. The 1st time I heard about stardust: “When the stars exploded billions of years ago, they formed everything that is this world. Everything we know is stardust. So don't forget, you are stardust." says the palm reader in the 1995 movie Before Sunrise starring Ethan Hawk and Julie Delphy. Thank you for sharing the scientific view of it as well.

I really tried, honest. 😂 Very fortuitous this week, Kathryn: in attempting to organise all my fabrics, I just rediscovered some large half-square triangle pieces intended for a quilt a few years ago (I lost my confidence)... This may help me move forward so that I can put those pieces to some use, and enjoy them again. Thank-you.

PS The way I got my mind around which way to place the diagonals was - from the top - acute, grave, acute, grave. I'm finding it a good mnemonic.

Friendship star week! The playful dog-cat battle that broke out midway through made me laugh! We have punaise here in the US too; they came from Asia in 1998 and are such an annoyance. We call them Stink Bugs and I personally don’t think they smell anything like almonds! One buzzed above my head into my lamp just last week, causing me to scream loudly which delighted my son, who dispatched the nasty interloper for me. I hope your trip to England was wonderful!

I am a quilter, though not a very good one, and it was freeing not to have to match corners, etc. I have told myself that this would be my year of embracing imperfection and you are a great help! I must confess that I still tend to want to make things neat, maybe that's me. What I also love about your weekly episodes is the link you make with language and poetry. (By the way today's poem was by Yeats). Thank you once more.

Hahaha … Fred-Fred, Stella and Sirius need their own channel. We are (sadly) in a dog-free phase, but our two were brilliant time keepers and one of them was definitely a shop steward. It was horrendous if we were trying to squeeze an extra few minutes for something. Oh, and one of them insisted on ‘helping’ whenever I picked up fabric, wool, needles,thread, paper, pen, book … Sewing is definitely less stressful at the mo, but we did have to buy a cuckoo clock so that we now know the time in the absence of demanding terriers. Dog-free now too ... still missing my doggie (Jack Russel type). But some things are easier without a pet, so probably it will stay that way

The closest I think is Cygnus who Zeus transformed into a swan so he could carry his friend's body safely to the afterlife. Zeus was so impressed with Cygnus' friendship and loyalty that he immortalised him as a constellation. ❤️

Hi Jeri it should be here tomorrow fingers crossed. It's with the delivery company not too far away, where it's been for nearly two weeks, they only come out here on Wednesdays and tomorrow was the first available slot. 🙄 Know the feeling, too many projects, too little time.
