    Love to meet other throwers. Was always told I was knitting incorrectly but no other way felt comfortable so I used to not knit in front of people!!! Now in my senior years I know it doesn’t matter what other people think 😂. Very excited to learn to knit socks. Thanks Kathryn for the very clear instructions.

      Hello Ellen, oh those know it all types who tell folk they're doing stuff wrong. I was once crocheting (I do that weird too) and my neighbour came round and said that's not the proper way to do it. I don't care any more either, as long as I enjoy it. ❤️

I'm not quite ready to attempt socks (my head is still on free-form machine quilting as my next sidebar stitching), but I love listening to you talk about your projects. I thought I was the ONLY one left using my 73 Year-Old-Happy-Ager Knees….I agree One must have a “box for the Fiddlies” for my ChiaoGoo changeable needles…..love the CARDBOARD sizing of family bare feet….Auntie Lilly and my Finnish Grandmother Ina seem to be on the same page when it comes to knitting and passing it on to the future…..

      There is much to learn from the 'new' ways of knitting but the old ways have their place too don't they? Apart from anything else, it's lovely to keep them alive. I have tried to teach my daughter to knit but she never took to it, though she likes to crochet. My son has asked about knitting occasionally because he finds it fascinating so I perhaps I will try and teach him, the Aunty Lily, Granny Ina method of course. 😁❤️

    Finally! Someone who casts on and knits the same way that I do. I think it must be a generational thing because my Nana (born in 1898) taught me. I've tried to copy the fluid, speedy way of others on many tutorials but my fingers won't join in. I didn't know I am a thrower 😁. Just giving it a name legitimizes it as a method so I am happy.
    Love the "2 strands at a time" knitting. It's a game changer. Ditto the cardboard feet. I now feel cautiously optimistic that I might become a sock knitter. I've knitted everything else but socks have always eluded me...until now. Thank you Kathryn.

      My pleasure Mary, yes I learnt the terminology of thrower or picker on the internet. Also referred to as English style or continental. For years of course, I didn't know there was another way. I can now 'pick' with the wool in my left hand but for some bizarre reason, only when knitting fairy isle, when I have one colour in each hand. When I use only one colour, I go back to what I have been doing for fifty plus years. 😂 I am certain you can knit socks, hope you enjoy it if you give it a try. ❤️

    First of all, thank you for sharing your knowledge and skills. ❤️🙏 I have been a knitter since I was in the womb (at least, that’s what it feels like), and I’ve been knitting socks forever. But never have I come across a nostepinner, which, I think as others have commented, is a game changer. I often use 2 strands together for thicker socks, so this is a game changer for me, too. I do, however, keep the specifics of each foot I knit for, but not in the organised way you do. I love your practical approach. I’ve learned so much in this short video. I knit cuff down, but can see SO many advantages to toe up. However, I struggle with circular needles for socks. Which is weird, because I knit other items on circs - in the round and flat - so maybe it’s just a ‘head thing’ for me. Anyway, I am really looking forward to Part 2. Take care, lovely K3n ❤️

      I wonder where you get your yarn from? I used to buy premium local merino wool. But now that I've been slow stitching and using reclaimed cloth, I dont know how I put so much money into yarn. I would like to use reclaimed yarn but I'm not sure where to start.

      There is a little wool shop run by a woman who spins and dyes her own wool in England near my friends house where I stay when I visit. She also sells commercial yarn, some from local, small businesses. I honestly can't remember where I got these little bits from, though I think they are pure wool and alpaca by the feel of them so they won't wear that well in socks. My biggest issue is that I find socks have to include some nylon or they wear out in no time. I think using thrifted sock reinforcement thread is maybe the most 'eco' thing to do but I do have quite a few balls of commercial sock yarn to use up which has a percentage of nylon in it. I also buy wool for fair isle etc from a mother daughter company here in France. I have unraveled thrifted sweaters to reknit in the past and it's quite a task. Getting your own goats or sheep would be a great way to go. 😂❤️

    • @ocean.almajeda
      @ocean.almajeda 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks Kathryn, that's very helpful :) I won't feel bad about buying lovely local wool. I think it's the best way to go for me. I've bought some commercial merino sock yarn with a bit of nylon in it, and they're incomparably durable! Less stretch though so I will make my next pair a bit bigger :)

    I have a nostepinne! Now I know what it is - thanks to you!! My son gave me it along with a few vintage spools and weaving tools! I do have a ball winder which is super simple but I’ll now have a go with the nostepinne.

    Thank you, Kathryn, for another informative video! I am an avid sock knitter, I must have made well over a hundred pairs, I've also made socks for hubby too, so much so that i dont even use a pattern anymore lol. I use either Chiaogoo or HiyaHiya needles, 2mm. I start off with Judy's Magic Cast On (I've never tried Nathan's version, I must have a look!) and finish with Jeni's Surprisingly Stretch Bind Off. The heels are just short row. I also throw my yarn, although when in knit Fair Isle I use both hands and continental. I've never knitted two at a time, but I really must try it....I suffer terribly from second sock syndrome!
    Thank you again, I'm really looking forward to seeing the rest of them x

      I am the same with fair isle. It's funny that we go back to throwing with only one colour. I try to make myself knit continental as it's a more economical movement but always revert to throwing. 😁❤️

    Thank you Kathryn! Can you repeat the names of that wooden yarn winding tool? I bought one in a box of old thread and lace at a junk shop in Ottawa last summer. Looked very much like yours except it screwed apart and had some very rusty thin knitting needles inside. I thought it was just a holder and wondered why there were grooves all along it. Looking forward to the rest of the series. I am a beginner knitter and socks are my ultimate goal. Cheers!

      Mine is a pirn, from the shuttle of a weaving loom but I use it as a nostepinne, sounds like that is what yours is, sounds wonderful with the needle storage. ♥️

    That’s the first time I’m watching a video and it seems I don’t understand English 😂! I’m not a knitter, my mother tried to teach me when I was a child, but as I didn’t like it, I never tried again. Never say never, who knows, but I think I would have to learn the words first 😂
    Much love 💙🧡♥️🩷💜💚🤍🤎💛❤️🩶🩵

      It's a whole other language. 😂 I just commented to Machteld about how I was so intrigued by the knitting patterns when I was a child, with the numbers and strange symbols, and how it seemed like magic that the women in my family could not only read them but take two sticks and some wool and produce a sweater 😁❤️

    Yeah, I never measure or gauge. It’s not a waste of time but I won’t make fitting objects anymore. I knit book covers. I knit the cover, then make a book to fit the cover. lol. My bad. ❤

    Hi Kathryn, I looked through the comments and didn't see this question, when you are casting on and testing your gauge, you're knitting with 2 threads from each end of the ball. I thought that each end was going to make a sock, so you make 2 socks at a time with one thread for each sock. Is that the case? Then wouldn't your gauge be wrong if you're testing it with double knitted threads? Or are we making one sock with 2 threads from each end of the ball? In that case, why not just use a fatter thread? Or should I just trust the process? Pardon me while I over-think it! 🙂

      Hi Amy, I am making these socks thicker so it goes quicker and I am recommending that newby sock knitters do the same. I would have used double knit but I don't have any, however I have all these little balls of fingering weight so I am doubling it up to equal DK. Hope that's now clear. 😉 You will see when I cast on in Friday's video. I think I confused you showing my Mum's socks, with a single strand of fingering weight on smaller needles. ♥️

      @@k3n.clothtales Ok, thank you, that makes sense. The yarn I have on hand is just a little thicker, so I'll stick w/ single strand. My #3 needle is the smallest I have too. I plan to work with that and see how it goes before I go hunting for new needles or yarn. Thanks for doing this, I'm looking forward to learning!

    Ok, I feel stupid, but why the business of moving the stitches to make stockinette rather than purling?

    • @k3n.clothtales
      @k3n.clothtales  23 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Hello, not stupid at all. 😉 Some people have different tension when they purl instead of knitting, when knitting in the round, you don't purl for stockinette so this way of knitting a swatch mimics knitting in the round. Hope that's clear 😉❤️
