- The latest episode of Wonky Wednesday where I explore log cabins and related projects. This week is joining Manx quilt blocks which fascinate me as all the measurements come from the maker's own hand. I also show how I make a basic cushion.

The large quilt it a fantastic idea. Quilting along with folk from around the world would be very special. Thank you!
A global quilting bee 😁❤️
Would love a whole quilt or any other project if it comes from you. So delighted to have found your channel. Thank you for all you do - I love every minute of it.
Thank you so pleased you are happy here ❤️
I would love if you did a “whole quilt” series! Thanks for all you do!!!
Thank you Danielle, I think 2025 will be a weekly quilt along. 😁❤️
I appreciate your manner of teaching..it is clear and concise. I would like a quilt as you go in this style. Thank you for sharing your talent and flair ❤
I’ve been thinking about making a quilt but the thought of tackling a huge quilt all by hand since I don’t have a sewing machine seemed a bit daunting…but you showing us how to make it in small manageable pieces is brilliant. And you answered some questions I had about the process. Thank you for your videos & your wittering, I love both! 😊
Hello Cathy, so pleased you are enjoying the videos. I think next year's weekly project will be a hand stitched quilt made in sections. Seems like a popular idea. 😁❤️
@@k3n.clothtales That would be wonderful ❤
I have five large pieced tops that I will never quilt. I’ve finally decided to put them aside for machine quilting someday. Probably hired to do so. I much prefer quilt as you go. I can do a million small pieces and no large ones. As I say this I’m making a tablecloth that’s rather large but I plan to slow stitch on it for many days to come. Love to sew along with you. You give me all kinds of permission to let myself be more creative. ❤
That is a good solution for your quilts, and your table cloth sounds lovely ❤️
Really enjoyed learning the Manx quilt block. The cushion turned out beautifully. Thank you for sharing your skills with us!
I so appreciate learning these different ethnic methods and your style suits me to a T. An entire quilt? That's what you just now finished, for me. I'm sure there's much more to the process but I think the artistry is in these samplings and explorations and what one does with it is another thing. I will be here, no matter what you create, with gratitude.
Thank you Ann, I would of course design a full quilt project in such a way that it enabled me to share lots of techniques and ideas and also so that people who didn't want to make a quilt could use the individual pieces for other things. ❤️
A whole quilt would be so good. Thankyou.
Wonderful, maybe for next year's project then. 😁❤️
@@k3n.clothtales❤❤❤
Thank so much for sharing all of your amazing skills with us.
I do love having all the little weekly blocks to finish ❤
My pleasure 😊
I had forgotten about Wonky Wednesday, or Thursday morning for me down here, so when I saw you had posted it I got excited. In my head I could hear you saying, "Hello lovely people," and was looking forward to your "whittering
as you call it. I find you whittering very soothing while I stitch, enhancing the mindfulness of slow stitching, as well as fascinating with the stories you tell and tangents you go off on. As for ironing, I have a Quick Press Seam Roller which I've found so good for these blocks and the weekly project we are all doing. Thank you for being you and doing you.
Hello Christine thank you for being here ❤️
Beautiful cushion Kathryn, so wonderful to be able to make ‘stuff’ yourself! I would never say no to a quilt series (or any project) if it comes from you. Thoroughly enjoying myself slowstitching away🍀💖
Thank you Machteld, my cushion looks good on my new sofa which was delivered today, it's really small but nice in my studio. Fredfred and Stella haven't discovered it yet 😂
@@k3n.clothtales I’m sure that won’t take long! 😀🍀💖
Lovely Manx cushion.
It was very clear to me as always. Your cushion is beautiful
I’m imagining Fredfred or Stella being delighted to sleep on that cushion 😴 I believe that little Stella would snore 💤 even more 😆
It’s beautiful! Really beautiful!😍
I made many, many crochet blankets for my bed and sofa, but I never made a quilt, so it would be really interesting for me to try to make one 😊
Lots of love from rainy, windy and cold Portugal (it seems winter has arrived… again…😂) 🤎♥️🩵💜💙🧡💚🩷🤍💛
The weather is like that here as well, apparently it was warm and sunny all last week here while I was over in England 😂 much love, I think next year, we are making a quilt together 😜❤️
Very clever way to join the blocks....... love love love it !!!
Thank you 😊
Thank you, a full quilt sounds good 😊
Great, something to look forward to next year 😁
Love the finished cushion and the baby block. I also use the envelope backing for cushions and pillows etc. I really must get back on Instagram, I haven’t been bothered with it for ages as I find it too distracting, it’s the same with Pinterest, there’s just too much! I just have to learn to be more disciplined with it. Very excited to start Manx quilt experiment, thank you for sharing it. Have a lovely Easter.😊❤
I know it can be overwhelming, endless scrolling and rabbit holes to go down. 😉♥️
Cushion turned out beautiful. 😊
Thank you 😊
Thank you, Kathryn, for all the little details you give us. I'm learning so much from you. ❤
Every project you've given us this year has been a delight, and I feel confident to complete my own wonky cushion cover, and so much more.
❤😂❤
You are welcome Sheila, so pleased you are enjoying yourself ❤️
I love the fact that you are not persnicky about " these are the rules that must be follwed"! I have made many pillow covers with the envelope back, much easier than piping and zips and it uses up fabric you might not otherwise want to use. One of my favorites is done with a block I found in box of gifted fabric from a friends mother. The block about 12 inches square is hand embriodered with hearts and flowers in a neat nine patch pattern, low volume blues and pinks in a gazillion french knots, the lady probably made it in the 1970s very simple and attractive I bring it out for valentines and spring. Thank you for all the inspiration. I started the weekly slowstich in March and a caught up..finished a small boro inspired journel yesterday an put all my blocks into the journal..I did skip making the feather block but may try one today, my sewing room needs a serious tidy before I do any sewing today!
Yes I think if 'they' make rules, they are just begging for them to be broken. 😂 So pleased you are enjoying the weekly slowstitch, happy tidying ❤️
Ahhh. Lovely, clear description of assembling the Manxes. And, yes please a whole quilt. xo
Thank you and I think next year we are all hand stitching a quilt 😁❤️
I would love to do a whole quilt with you. I am an admirer from down under. love your creations ..thankyou 💕 love manx quilting too
Thank you so much lovely to have you here ❤️
Hello Kathryn ,thank you for another wonderful video ,on the subject of quilting I would love to see you make a large Siddi quilt , maybe lap quilt size then hopefully it would not be to big to fit on your work space 😊
Hello, I would love to make another one and when I do, I will share it here ❤️
How fabulous the cushion looks, I never would have paired it with the fabric you chose for the backing but I love it. Yes please for a whole quilt (if ever you get time)
I am thinking it will be next year's weekly project so a while away but it's good to have a plan 😁❤️
So Lovely. will make one for myself. I Love Manx Cats ! !💙
I first learned about Manx quilting from Pepper Cory who did a very interesting tutorial. The history is fascinating! I love log cabin blocks, so this is wonderful. TFS!
My pleasure ☺️
A whole quilt would be so nice
Next year's project I am thinking 😁❤️
Hi Kathryn - yes please to making a quilt but as next year's project. Perfect for the winter months.
I love your wonky Manx cushion and the backing material is gorgeous!!!
I only ever make envelope cushion covers...loathe putting in zips. I think the envelope gives a smoother finish anyway.
My broadband is around 65 but my daughter on the mainland gets 1300ish.
Unimaginable.
Looking forward to the next wonky Wednesday.
Mary x
Hello Mary wow that's super super fast 😁 I think the quilt will be great for next year, my brain is already working on it, something to look forward to ❤️❤️❤️
What a coincidence!!! I just emailed Espoma last week or so about my dogs eating the Plant Tone!! I’ve been using it for years, and wasn’t really worried when they would go after and eat it, but emailed just in case.
Espoma did say there was nothing in their fertilizer that would harm an animal-if anything maybe an upset belly.
As Espoma said to do, keep ALL fertilizers in a shed or garage away from animals, and to bury it in the soil a bit and water in well.
I do have to put small fences around just in case they want to dig.
Thanks Laura and Aaron for all the knowledge you pass along to everyone…I have ABSOLUTELY learned a lot these past 5-6 years!!
Hi Susan, I think TH-cam has skipped you along to the next video and your comment has ended up in the wrong place. Happens to me all the time. 😁❤️
Yes … ballet shoes … it would have been chain stitch 🙌 And thank you as ever ❤
Thank you for that, I was pretty sure that is what my friend did but it would have been 50 years ago (scary thought!) so it's nice to have it confirmed ❤️
@@k3n.clothtales There’s other ways too, but definitely at the classes I went to it was chain stitch. I saw someone else comment today that she used crochet … that makes sense too.
whole quilt sounds great
I think it's happening 😁
Nice. I might square those two blocks with a rotary cutter if I were to be picky about it. For a pillow, it won't matter if it's wonky.
You do you 😁❤️
So lovely!
Thank you 😊
Thank you : )
Hello from Beautiful British Columbia Canada 🇨🇦
My daughters (4) did ballet.
The oldest went the furthest ...
I used crochet cotton(#10) to make little round covers for her pointe shoes. I may have used some fabtic glue, then hand stitched with a bendy beading needle around the edges.
Later she had some that came with suede-ish toes. She will be 49 this year.... the second one may have had pointe shoes. Sewing ribbons and elastic to shoes, and taping down the ties to the underside of the toes. Crocheting bun warmers...mending tights ..tutus, all kinds of costumes
Sounds like a lot of work, my Mum got off lightly when I gave it up 😁 if I can find the photo of me in my tutu, I will share it one of these Mondays. I was so cute! 😊❤️
I want to finish are weekly book first and hopefully next year work on a quilt. Doing your weekly project and Wonky Wednesday and then my own projects I have no time.
I am thinking of the quilt project for next year, when we have finished this year's weekly book. ❤️
Such a lovely cushion Kathryn. I have made mine using zips but definitely what to give this method a try.
Making a quilt as you go quilt would be so exciting ❤
I think that will be next year's project for sure 😊
Hi Kathryn. Another fabulous video! I'll have to wait until the weekend to assemble my cushion. Meanwhile, the thing dancers use to harden the points off their shoes is shellac. My daughter is a dancer, so she does that a lot.
Hello, shellac, yes that was it, thank you so much 😊♥️
Beautiful ❤️
Thank you Julie ☺️
I love your Manx cushion! Haven't had a chance to try a Manx block, but I will at some point.
Hadn't done patchwork
before....so glad you are my first inspiration.....
I am honoured to be ❤️
Beautiful!!
I think I want to turn my Manx Blocks into a rice bag. Just not sure how to attach them. Would it be similar to how you put them together for the cushion? Probably wouldn’t need the batting? Hmmm. I have to many questions…may have to pick something easier to take on. lol
Love your cushion. Hope it goes lovely with your new sofa.
Hi Jenny, you absolutely could make a rice bag, you could replace the blocks I made in the rice bag video with Manx blocks and use that method of joining and lining, or you could do it this way without a lining. maybe use a slightly thicker foundation cloth for the blocks, your bag would still be squishy but it would work I think. ❤️
Could we make a quilt that had all different squares rather than all the same? I think that would be a fabulous year-project!
it could be the week's squares turned into a quilt?
I am thinking of doing something along those lines as a weekly project next year ❤️
Beautiful cushion! I am trying to resist starting a log cabin while I finish a UFO, but it looks so fun and visually appealing.
My favorite use for button plackets from men’s shirts is to use them for cushion backs, in lieu of envelop back. Now I cut them off the shirt with at least half an inch seam allowance.
That is a fabulous idea, thank you 😊❤️
Lovely project, K. Happy about a home-made stuffer cushion. Sorry to say I'm not clear about the size of the fabric for it. You mentioned same size as the outer shell before the seam allowance. But, the seam allowance on which? It's said to end up "larger than the outer", but I'm not getting how. Would you kindly clarify this size and seam allowance measurement when you have moment? Thank you so much. I very much enjoy your 'Clothtales":)
Hello, the cover was 15" less a half inch seam all round so finished at 14" but I made the cushion pad 15" finished size so it's basically an inch bigger. Hope that is a bit clearer than mud 😁❤️
Love the ‘wonk’. Gives such freedom, which gives such joy. Thank you. Did you treat yourself to new scissors whilst in the UK?
No, I completely forgot, too much excitement going on. I will have to get some when I go back in May. 😁❤️
A quilting project would be lovely. My Monday weekly challenge blocks are coming along nicely as a quilt as you go quilt. Did you end up getting new scissors in England?
To be honest, I completely forgot 😂 I got some other bits and bobs though, there's a little video coming on Friday about my trip. ❤️
Sorry if I missed this but should your cushion be the same measurement as your finished square?
Hello, yes that would be usual but I like to make my pads slightly smaller so the cushion fills out the cover nicely. Just me, you do you 😁❤️
Hi Kathryn, my understanding, having watched the Manx ladies in Cregneish doing this, is that they joined their blocks in the same way. It's fiddly, but I found it quite satisfying 🙂
Brilliant thank you Rosy ❤️
Lovely pillow, yes yes yes make a quilt PLEASE ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Next year!! I've got my daughter's wedding to get ready for in October, but I would love to start a quilt together next winter.
@@kimberlyjardine8634 I hope you can wait until next year, I think it will be the new weekly project 😁❤️
@@newmoonjlp good luck with that, how exciting. 🥰 So quilt making will begin next January. 😉❤️
I meant our not are. Oh well!
