Cumbrian e-bike trails
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 12 ม.ค. 2022
Predominantly off road (and minor road) e-bike trails in Cumbria and the Lake District for those riders who want to hit the trail but don't want to ride the more technical, high level, mountain bike routes that are readily available in this area.
The husband and myself are Cumbrians and just prior to Covid we purchased Cube hardtail e-bikes (now upgraded to Cube full suspension e-bikes). We struggled to find safe, off road, routes suitable for our senior age and riding ability. I therefore thought it might be useful to record our rides so others can benefit and hopefully enjoy.
These videos aim to highlight the routes terrain in order viewers can assess the suitability of the ride for themselves.
A basic route map is included at the end of each video and if you have the Komoot app they are available at ‘Cumbrian e-bike trails’.

Coniston, Tarn Hows & Walna Scar, an amazing emtb ride through stunning scenery in the Southern LDNP
An enjoyable, more challenging route for the novice off-road mountain biker. The video pays particular attention to the terrain to ensure potential riders can judge if it is suitable for their level of riding ability before riding the route.
This is a lovely route for those riders who don't want anything too technical but fancy a little bit of a challenge!
This is a scenic, circular, emtb ride in the English Lake District National Park starting from High Cross car park on the northern edge of Grizedale Forest. A gravel and in places rocky bridleway takes you up to Tarn Hows and then down & across the A593 to ride a gravel cycle path to Coniston and up to the Coniston Copper Mine (disused). Another rocky bridleway is followed by a short but steep tarmac climb up to the car park on Walna Scar road. With views to the right onto Coniston Old Man you then ride a gravel section along Walna Scar road before turning left onto a bridleway, grass at first and then rocky, riding down passed a water filled quarry, into Torver. Easy cycling on a disused railway line/cycle path takes you alongside Coniston Lake before another steep gravel bridleway returns you back to the car park at High Cross.
This ride is 17.2 miles long & roughly 95% off-road.
I've put together this ride and several others as I've found a distinct lack of detailed information on rideable off-road routes for those of us with mountain e-bikes (hardtail or full suspension) who want to enjoy a non-technical, but fun, ride.
The number of senior e-bike riders appears to be rapidly increasing and I'm hoping these routes will be useful to those visiting Cumbria and the Lake District and maybe even the local residents, like ourselves.
A basic map showing the route is available at the end of the video or you can view the route on Komoot at Cumbrian e-bike trails using the following link: www.komoot.com/tour/1573258072?share_token=aQCJi7jRVOuV5KHtm9ssNmOLJAPIhXzCW1maXmTOG65KJDSbpm&ref=wtd

An interesting ride for the novice off-road mountain biker. Basically a long, gradual slog up grassy/fell land to the top of Loadpot Hill (above Ullswater) and then an even longer downhill section. How have you found the switch from a hardtail to a full suspension bike? Is it now more enjoyable to do these rides ....thinking of making the change myself but was wondering what your thoughts were on this.
Full suspension for me is a more comfortable ride over rougher ground and it seems to travel over the bumpier stuff with ease and makes me feel a lot more confident tackling stoney tracks. At times my head might say “I can’t do this” but the bike has other ideas and before I know it I’m over the problem! I just have to trust the bikes ability! I am a senior, novice rider so not got a lot of experience but just love the full suspension and wish we’d gone straight for them instead of hardtails. Hope this helps.
@@cumbriane-biketrails7944 thanks for the reply...will bite the bullet, take the loss on sale of my hardtail and go full suspension...enjoy your videos and as i have the komoot app will try some of them out...like you prefer non technical scenic routes in the Lake District
We watched this video then finally got around to doing this ride in May. We ended up getting the train to Ravenglass and having a ice cream on the beach, then followed the trail back to Eskdale. We made a few detours around Eskdale to visit the mill and Japanese gardens and finally had dinner sat outside at the Woolpack. This was such a enjoyable ride with a bit of everything with the right conditions it can make a perfect day. I can’t believe how quiet this area is too. Thanks for making this video, it was really appreciated 😊
Thanks, really pleased you had a good day 👍
Great video. I ride alone this seems perfect for me to do. An explore without much biking knowledge of the area and nothing too hairy that I'll come a cropper
I’m sure you’ll love the route. I’m way too old to risk a fall and I would happily ride the route again by myself - the only bit I hadn’t previously ridden was the Coniston up Walna Scar and down to Torver bit hence why I dragged Andy along just in case but it wasn’t as rough as I had anticipated!
Would love to know what’s silly about techy routes!
🙂Perhaps wrong choice of word .... was speaking from my perspective as a senior rider meaning unsuitable for my own age & ability!
Another great vidio🙂
Cheers
Love the look of this ride I’ll have to give it a try is it on ur Komoot thanks
Thanks, it really is a lovely route. It is on my Komoot….a link is included in the description towards the end. If you are going straight to my Komoot page I’ve opened the complete route on my planned page as on my completed ride page it shows as 2 rides because I was having a technical issue! 🙂
@@cumbriane-biketrails7944 great thanks a lot for that, keep riding safe
Hi Kate could you please tell me whats the make of Nigel’s bag he uses, I’m thinking of changing to this type of bag. Is Nigel happy with it. I’ve recently purchased a Cube Stereo Hybrid 140, with a 750 battery, absolutely love it. Thanks again keep pedalling, love the videos 👌👏
Hi there and thank you. The bag is an Osprey Tempest 6 and Nigel finds it comfortable to wear. It is quite roomy and holds all we need for our rides. Only down side is the light grey easily gets dirty! I agree with you re these bikes, they are such fun.
Loved your route very nice part of the country , great tip for the squeaky brakes ,when cleaning the bike use a green scotch pad with hot soapy water give the brake disc a good scrubbing as if you are sanding the disc on both sides where the pads meet , finish off with a spray of brake cleaner it stops that squeak. All the best Sam
Hi Sam, thanks for your suggestion and I’ll give it a go. 👍
Thankyou...i will look forward to watching it
Another great video....keep em coming...can i ask have you done a video on Kielders lakeside way (even though its not cumbria lol)
Iron Keld is a super route, pleased you liked it! We do ride round Kielder but haven’t as yet recorded it but I intend to this Summer. 👍
Wow awesome scenery cheered me up on this wet miserable spring day. Langdales one of the best places in the lakes, walked there many years ago.
Couldn't agree more!
Great video again. Bit of advice, I noticed, when going down the slate chute, that Nigel was sat down and then had to take his foot off to keep his balance. It would be much easier if he stood up , used his legs, as more suspension, to absorb the bumps. Staying sat down just tends to bump you up and down through the saddle. "On yer feet, not the seat". Not a criticism, just advice. Keep the videos coming, really enjoy your relaxed delivery.
Thank you and appreciate your thoughtful comment but unfortunately Nigel has 2 dodgy knees (right one replaced last May) and consequently he rides with care! 🙂
Another great video, thanks for taking the time to post these. Some fantastic views. The route was pretty dry, out of interest ( from your local knowledge) do you think the route would be too wet at this time of year.
Pleased you enjoyed video. Most of the route will be rideable however the Iron Keld section will be wet/boggy in places at the moment as we’ve had prolonged, significant rainfall.
Hi.These routes are great for my wife and me.keep up the good work.👍.can i ask what the app is on your phone you use to navigate?.
Thank you. Good to hear. I plan the routes using Komoot and then transfer to the e-bike flow app and open that on either my iphone (held firmly on my bike with the bosch smartphone holder) or on the kiox 300 display. As I wear glasses I prefer seeing the larger screen on my iphone so that's what I usually use.
@@cumbriane-biketrails7944 thanks for the reply, I'll look into the app.
Your videos are really useful for me to plan rides when we visit the lakes. My partner is not so confident on more technical routes and doesn’t appreciated when I’ve mistakenly taken us up Skiddaw! Clear instructions and give me a much more accurate idea of the terrain than just planning on a map app. Just a couple of observations. For me, the music isn’t necessary, and a separate mike or ‘wind muff’ would enhance the videos even more. But great rides and please keep posting. Thank you

Thank you and appreciate your comments. Your partner is the very rider these videos are made for so good to hear they may be of use. I’m not on Strava but you can access my rides on Komoot at ‘Cumbrian e-bike trails’ 👍. I’m not tecky so this is a steep learning curve and in the future will try to sort a way of putting a gpx link in the description! 🤪 Also am wondering if music necessary as even though I try to keep it quiet when editing, when it’s uploaded TH-cam seems to up the volume 🤷♀️🤣 Hope you get as much enjoyment out of riding these routes as we did and continue to do 🚵🏻♂️🚵♀️
Come on guys, we need you to get out every week to keep us going through these last few winter weeks!! Hope you are going to stockpile plenty of rides to keep us motivated next winter!

Glad you enjoyed it
It's great to see you're both doing well 😊 I did the same route back end of last year, was a bit more boggy in some bits Funny I ended up pushing bike in same places as you haha 😄 But an enjoyable ride 😊
It's so much fun getting out on these e-bikes but must admit I like drier conditions ..... still Spring is just round the corner 🤞! I want to try some of the bridleways up on the Green Quarter/Kentmere area so definitely need it to be drier! 😊
This is so helpful; I am a roadie at heart but the roads in the Lakes are too narrow and stonewall sided for it to feel safe. I will be basing my first hard tail adventure on this route. Many thanks
Good to hear the video is of use to you. Hope you enjoy your ride. 👍
Hi love you videos, and rides, have you thought about doing a video on how exactly you plan and set up your rides
Thank you. I’ll maybe tackle your suggestion one day but all it really takes is time/research, our local knowledge (we are Cumbrians), Komoot, OS maps etc and picking son-in-laws brains (experienced local, extreme mountain biker) as to what route NOT suitable for our ability and senior age! I tend to walk any section of a route I’m not sure about as some bridleways just not rideable by us and e-bikes are not light even with walk assist! 🤣
hello, we are coming to the lake district in June (from the Netherlands) I see your nice ride, do you also have a GPX of the ride? Greetings Erik
Hi Erik, Thank you for your kind comment. I use the app Komoot (Cumbrian e-bike trails) and I have made routes available on there to view but to download GPX file on Komoot I think you have to unfortunately unlock the local Komoot map for which they charge! Sorry can’t think of any other way to get GPX to you as not techie! Hope you manage to sort as it really is a lovely route.
hi, thanks for your response, maybe you can post a link of your ride in the response? then maybe I can use it. Have A Nice Day

yes it works, thank you very much😊. One of us also has komoot, we are staying in a beautiful house just outside Ambleside and can pick up the ride there (or another ride of yours) we are looking forward to it, wish you more nice rides, I will continue to follow you on TH-cam👍. Greetings Erik
Excellent vid perfect for me at 72 with a dodgy knee the gnarly tracks are getting a bit to tricky now 👍
Thank you. We are not far behind you age wise and hubby just had partial knee replacement earlier in year but up and out there again! So much fun 🚵♀️🚵🏻♂️👍
Brilliant guys, love your vids😁👊❤️🇬🇧
I can almost smell the hills watching your video. Can’t wait to get back up there. 👍
Loved this one I’ve done most of this but not some parts so looking forward to following this one
That looked a great ride with great weather as well Going to give that a go hopefully soon if weather stops raining lol Well done 👍
Thanks 👍
Great video of that route and well done on riding that more technical terrain.
Thank you. Tbh wasn’t sure about uploading this, but decided to as thought it may be helpful to others . The video clearly shows the severity of the terrain in places and might help potential riders (senior or otherwise 🤣) to decide if it’s for them or not!
Awesome video. You had amazing weather, exactly type of route I’m happy with. Nothing more technical. Out of interest, a couple of questions regarding your bike set up, if I may. What’s the small device attached to the top tube ? I note on the newer cube you are using your phone for navigation as the bikes don’t come with their own display. Do you prefer this or the dedicated cycle display. I’m so scared phone would get damaged and that’s also the communication device lost. I do however like the bigger screen. What’s your opinion.
Thank you, really pleased you enjoyed the video. The device is the GoPro remote as I find this the easiest way to set GoPro off (voice control not reliable and sometimes tricky finding button on the Gopro when riding!) The bike came with a Kiox 300 display but as I need to wear glasses (variable lens) to ride I found the display too small to read and much prefer the larger, more detailed map the flow app provides on the iPhone. The map is the main thing I use the display for and when riding a new route I find the Kiox 300 route display a tad too basic for my liking. I note that Bosch now do a larger Kiox 500 so maybe that display will be easier to read (it’s just an age thing for me! 🙂). I use the Bosch phone holder which I find to be really secure ….. it attaches to the bike display holder and allows the phone to charge and you can still move between different display screens to view ride info. This system works well for me and phone has not once fallen off but 🤷♀️🤞🏻.
Thanks for the reply., really appreciate you taking the time to do so. I’m not a go pro user so didn’t recognise the device but this makes complete sense. I also wear glasses so understand the need for a descent screen. I love the routes you are doing and I’m hoping to get down soon to ride some of these. Keep up the brilliant videos Thanks. Hugh
That looks a lot tougher than your normal rides, well done!!! Your phone mount looks very secure, may I ask what type it is?
👍Thank you. I use the Bosch iPhone holder which attaches to the bike display holder letting the phone charge as well as getting ride info from the bike. Has been a secure method for me (so far 🤞🏻)
@cumbriane-biketrails7944 thank you, I'll look into it. My wife (60) has just got her first ebike and your videos are a great inspiration for her. I normally ride slightly more technical stuff, but it has been really good riding together and watching her confidence grow!
Well done, you certainly chose a great day ! Excellent film quality - GoPro ? Have ridden up the right hand side of the valley past Skiddaw house, Mosedale etc but not the Crags so thanks for showing what that section is like. You'll be up Skiddaw next !
🙂 Thank you. Use GoPro 10 but helped weather was so good! 🤣 Not up Skiddaw but I have the ‘Back of Skiddaw’ route planned for next spring when, hopefully, the ground will be drier! 👏
Hi just viewed this video today and wow as usual brilliant commentry, was hoping you had this on ur Komoot but couldn’t see it but I’ve managed to follow ur map at the end of the video and planned this on Komoot so look forward to giving it a go so many thanks
Pleased you enjoyed video. I’ve just checked Komoot and renamed the route to ‘Cartmel, Hampsfell & Yewbarrow’ so easier to find…..apologies! 👍
@@cumbriane-biketrails7944 great thanks for that, loving following all ur routes
Thank Kate for your reply Well, how about this then Kate .......Create your own book for the niche of rider you make the videos for.
🤔🤣 It’s a thought ……
@@cumbriane-biketrails7944 '20 Pleasurable Bike Rides In Cumbria'......for the less dynamic cyclists I have no doubt you have a market for it. Don't procrastinate.... otherwise someone else will get there first :-)
Thank you for your videos. I'm planning to go e biking in Cumbria in the Spring. I too am of a senior age. So your videos are useful. Can you recommend a book or books on off road mountain bike routes in Cumbria?
Thank you for your positive comment. Tbh I don't use books as I feel, in the main, these are aimed at a much more advanced rider than myself and hence why I have done these videos? You may find Komoot more useful than books and you will find my routes available to view on that app under 'Cumbrian e-bike trails'.
Hi kate, nigel. What a fantastic slow smooth track, with beautiful views,, ullswater is not an area iv peddled much but will now😉👌❤️🇬🇧
We love this area and if you do ride the route down to Howtown you could always use the Ullswater steamer to take you/ebike back to Pooley Bridge. 👍
Hi Kate some of your back ground music is loud,, cant hear your commentary my dear😮beautiful ride😊👍🇬🇧never understand kate why the national trust cant maintain these paths of shrubbery and weeds, they make enough money to do so.... There should be a complaint app that you go on and mention the track in question so it can be strimmed and sprayed,,,if possible😊👌♥️
Oh no, thank you, I’ll take another look at it! This is one of my favourite routes. 👍
Looks some fantastic single track kate... My kind of trails 😊👌❤️a think the boys will love your tracks to😊as for your full sus, you will never go back kate to a hard tail...i think this track in the winter kate would be beautiful to ride in the snow
Really a lovely, quiet route…..hope you get to ride it sometime! 🙂
Kate iv noticed you have a new bike hun😮😁👌💜you need to show us😍👊the new kiox system by bosch is fantastic kate, much more advanced than the first one, yea. I find it brilliant display and more informative 😊just picked my new bike up on Friday 30sep 23👌stereo 160 TM😂looks a fantastic ride guys 😊👊🇬🇧
Yep we went full suspension and now ride the Cube Stereo 140 TM ebike, a great bike for trails we ride. As I wear spectacles I found the kiox display a tad small and the direction page a bit basic so opted to use my mobile with the Bosch phone holder and that works well for me. Maybe this is why Bosch have brought out the bigger Kiox display! Also I like changing the settings for the various riding modes using the flow app and hence why I’m not always in emtb! 🤣 😉 Have fun on your new bike 👍
Fantastic great to see more in the E BIKE FAMILY 😊❤👍
Fantastic little addition never new that track was there,😮iv always come up from Keswick roundabout to the carpark, past the spar place 😢😂😂❤👌what a fantastic job done to the old tunnel, with lights... I dont believe you had one scoop😂😂
Buuuuu the fly😂😂😂😂great 👍
Fantastic efforts guys😉👍🇬🇧❤️another brilliant video giving me more tracks to blast on my cube, E in one of my favourite destinations 😁👊👊🇬🇧❤️
Thank you
Come on guys, eco will bust your legs n lungs,,,,😂done a bit of these tracks on my gravel epic ride, 2022 😊👌🇬🇧fantastically explained video👏👏👏❤️🇬🇧if you put the bosch in to emtb mode your bike will give you power only when you need it so your not constantly changing power modes😉👍
Appreciate your comment and tbh husband does ride in emtb mode! These bikes are such amazing fun! 👍
Hi just found your channel, brilliant I like the commentary, I've retired from the top's, I think your rides are fantastic looking forward to riding them. 😊
Thank you. Really hope you enjoy them 👍
Nice to see something informative for a change
Thank you 🙂
Thanks, great explanation of the route. Not sure if you share routes via kamoot would love to try some next time we are in the Lakes.
Thank you and yes routes are available on Komoot under 'Cumbrian ebike trails'.
Hi, just wanted to let you know that I used your video as a guide from Tarn Hows on the pathway. I found this very helpful, as someone who is visually impaired and 66, I camped at Satterthwaite, while up at my sisters in Flookburgh, and used my mountain bike to get around, not an ebike, so plenty of walking on steeper gradients, got lost a few times, sign posts were not easy to see. Well done, love the guides, this was my annual 1 week respite, so may not get back to the lakes for a few years, cheers Alan.
Thank you and well done ……. really good to hear my video was of some use to you. 🚵🏻♂️👍
a brilliant navigation commentary ,excellent ride coverage you cant go wrong listening to this best coverage of a route ive watched well done
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
Hiya,,,what app is that you are using?
Hi there, I use Komoot to plan the rides and transfer to the Bosch flow app which I view on my iPhone or Kiox 300 display.
what would you say was your best place in the lakes.....irene
Hi Irene, difficult question to answer as all routes offer something different! Perhaps the route beside Grasmere, Rydal Water and up onto Loughrigg Fell / Terrace gives a good mix of scenery and easy cycling but also caters for those wanting something a little more challenging.
You are doing a brilliant job. Keep up the good work which is much appreciated. Regards
Thank you, I will
