A short, circular, extremely scenic, but more challenging route for us novice off-road mountain bikers. Described in various publications as an easy to intermediate ability route, so thought I might as well give it a go!
The ride starts from the village of Threlkeld and heads off uphill on tarmac towards the Blencathra Centre for approx a mile. From there its off-road for nearly all of the remaining route. The first section of the ride is easily ridden on a good gravel surface before a more challenging section, towards and across Lonscale Crags, over boulders and then rocky outcrops. We pushed our e-bikes across these parts and a couple of other places, but, in the main found it rather exhilarating considering our senior age and level of ability! Once beyond Lonscale Crags the ride is mostly downhill on a good gravel surface and then into Keswick where it joins the the disused railway cycle path for the return to Threlkeld.
Although a more challenging route for our level of ability, we feel the spectacular scenery throughout the ride makes it well worth the effort.
The video pays particular attention to the terrain to ensure potential riders can judge if it is suitable for their level of riding ability. I am extremely conscious, from the safety angle, that it may not be for everyone. Going across Lonsdale Crags, even when pushing the cycle, can be treacherous particularly if it’s raining!
This ride is 12.9 miles long & roughly 80% off-road. A basic map showing the route is available at the end of the video. The route is also available to view on my Komoot site at 'Cumbrian e-bike trails'.
The number of senior e-bike riders appears to be rapidly increasing and I'm hoping these routes will be useful to those visiting Cumbria and the Lake District and maybe even the local residents, like myself.

Well done, you certainly chose a great day ! Excellent film quality - GoPro ? Have ridden up the right hand side of the valley past Skiddaw house, Mosedale etc but not the Crags so thanks for showing what that section is like. You'll be up Skiddaw next !

🙂 Thank you. Use GoPro 10 but helped weather was so good! 🤣 Not up Skiddaw but I have the ‘Back of Skiddaw’ route planned for next spring when, hopefully, the ground will be drier! 👏

Hi love you videos, and rides, have you thought about doing a video on how exactly you plan and set up your rides

Thank you. I’ll maybe tackle your suggestion one day but all it really takes is time/research, our local knowledge (we are Cumbrians), Komoot, OS maps etc and picking son-in-laws brains (experienced local, extreme mountain biker) as to what route NOT suitable for our ability and senior age! I tend to walk any section of a route I’m not sure about as some bridleways just not rideable by us and e-bikes are not light even with walk assist! 🤣

Great video of that route and well done on riding that more technical terrain.

Thank you. Tbh wasn’t sure about uploading this, but decided to as thought it may be helpful to others . The video clearly shows the severity of the terrain in places and might help potential riders (senior or otherwise 🤣) to decide if it’s for them or not!

Awesome video. You had amazing weather, exactly type of route I’m happy with. Nothing more technical. Out of interest, a couple of questions regarding your bike set up, if I may. What’s the small device attached to the top tube ?
I note on the newer cube you are using your phone for navigation as the bikes don’t come with their own display. Do you prefer this or the dedicated cycle display. I’m so scared phone would get damaged and that’s also the communication device lost. I do however like the bigger screen. What’s your opinion.

Thank you, really pleased you enjoyed the video.
The device is the GoPro remote as I find this the easiest way to set GoPro off (voice control not reliable and sometimes tricky finding button on the Gopro when riding!)
The bike came with a Kiox 300 display but as I need to wear glasses (variable lens) to ride I found the display too small to read and much prefer the larger, more detailed map the flow app provides on the iPhone. The map is the main thing I use the display for and when riding a new route I find the Kiox 300 route display a tad too basic for my liking. I note that Bosch now do a larger Kiox 500 so maybe that display will be easier to read (it’s just an age thing for me! 🙂).
I use the Bosch phone holder which I find to be really secure ….. it attaches to the bike display holder and allows the phone to charge and you can still move between different display screens to view ride info. This system works well for me and phone has not once fallen off but 🤷‍♀️🤞🏻.

Thanks for the reply., really appreciate you taking the time to do so. I’m not a go pro user so didn’t recognise the device but this makes complete sense. I also wear glasses so understand the need for a descent screen. I love the routes you are doing and I’m hoping to get down soon to ride some of these. Keep up the brilliant videos Thanks. Hugh

That looks a lot tougher than your normal rides, well done!!! Your phone mount looks very secure, may I ask what type it is?

👍Thank you. I use the Bosch iPhone holder which attaches to the bike display holder letting the phone charge as well as getting ride info from the bike. Has been a secure method for me (so far 🤞🏻)

@cumbriane-biketrails7944 thank you, I'll look into it. My wife (60) has just got her first ebike and your videos are a great inspiration for her. I normally ride slightly more technical stuff, but it has been really good riding together and watching her confidence grow!
