  • A novice emtb route, albeit a bit more challenging in places, in the English Lake District National Park (Lowther Valley & Helton/Askham Fells) with panoramic views down onto Ullswater. This ride includes the more challenging bridleway from the Cockpit stone circle on Askham Fell down to the hamlet of Howtown and the video is particularly useful to riders wishing to view the terrain prior to riding it.
The route uses bridleways (roughly 70% off-road) and minor roads where possible and is suitable for those who riders who don't fancy the more technical, high level routes; the routes that are readily available in books, magazines, youtube etc.
This ride is 19 miles in length. Should the Howtown section seem too challenging then this route can be easily adjusted by avoiding Howtown and descending directly into Pooley Bridge and continuing the ride from there.
A basic map showing the route is available at the end of the video.
The video pays particular attention to the terrain to ensure potential riders can judge if the route is suitable for their level of riding ability. I've put together this ride and several others (work in progress) as I've found a distinct lack of detailed information on rideable off road routes for those of us with mountain e-bikes (hardtail or full suspension) who want to enjoy an easier ride. I've spent considerable time walking bridleways to assess rideability as many are just not suitable for our needs or just overgrown!
The number of senior e-bike riders appears to be rapidly increasing and I'm hoping these routes will be useful to those visiting Cumbria and the Lake District and maybe even the local residents, like ourselves.

We love this area and if you do ride the route down to Howtown you could always use the Ullswater steamer to take you/ebike back to Pooley Bridge. 👍
