  • A hardtail e-bike ride around Alston, in the Northern Pennines. The route travels along part of the South Tyne Trail, crosses remote sections of the Alston Moor and also takes in several quiet country lanes (roughly 45% off-road). A route for those with mountain bikes who don't fancy the more technical, higher level routes; the routes that are readily available in books, magazines, youTube etc.
This ride is 28 miles long but easily shortened. A basic map of the route is available at the end of the video.
The video pays particular attention to the terrain to ensure potential riders can judge if the route is suitable for their level of riding ability. The bridleway down to Garrigill is the trickiest section of this ride but it is only a short distance and can be walked.
I've put together this ride and several others (work in progress) as I've found a distinct lack of detailed information on rideable off-road routes for those of us with mountain e-bikes (hardtail or full suspension) who want to enjoy an easier ride. I've spent considerable time walking bridleways to assess rideability as many are just not suitable for our needs or just overgrown!
The number of e-bike riders (especially seniors, like us) appears to be rapidly increasing and I'm hoping these routes will be useful to those visiting Cumbria and the Lake District and maybe even the local residents, like ourselves.

Nice route. Just back from a couple of nights at the Nent Hall hotel. Really interested in going back over to do some riding especially following old lead mine trails. Ive just recently started riding the lead mine trails near Derwent reservoir. I see from your map at the end you've plotted this on Komoot, I really like the komoot app. Could i ask what your account name is so I can follow you and check out your routes. I have a couple of routes up near Blanchland you may like to look at both on youtube and on komoot.

Hi Steve and thanks for the comment. Account name for Komoot is Cumbrian e-bike trails. I'm still in the process of making some of my routes' public and unfortunately the Alston completed ride is fragmented so I've opened up the planned route for you to view. Hope it is of some. I think my routes may be too tame for you as they are aimed at the novice rider like my husband and myself. 😊
