An enjoyable, easy route for the novice off-road mountain biker. The video pays particular attention to the terrain to ensure potential riders can judge if it is suitable for their level of riding ability.
This is a lovely, circular, emtb ride in the English Lake District National Park travelling right round a large chunk of rock called Whitbarrow Scar.
Our route starts from just outside Sizergh Castle, riding on minor roads (unavoidable) for a few miles before hitting the cycle path alongside the A590. The route then becomes a wonderful rough gravel bridleway through woods running just below and parallel to White Scar (southern edge of Whitbarrow Scar) before heading north to Witherslack Hall with Whitbarrow Scar to the right. A somewhat rockier bridleway through more woodland, a section on a very minor country lonning is then followed by a short, but slightly steep, rockier climb up onto a good, rough surfaced, public byway travelling round the northern limits of the scar. After approx 50 yards on the A5074 a left turn takes us onto lovely grass/gravel track * across Lyth Moss towards Brigsteer. From there grassy bridleways descend to Sizergh Castle, where there is a lovely cafe if in need of refreshments, before returning to the starting point.
    * Please note; the ride across Lyth Moss travels through an advisory 'No public access' sign. For those riders not wishing to ignore this advisory the alternative is to ride further along the A5074 and take the left turn, signed for Brigsteer, and return to the planned route a few hundred yards along from the junction. We decided our route was safer that riding down the A5074!
This ride is 18.5 miles long & roughly 45% off-road. Almost all the road sections are on very quiet country lanes and as you would expect, the scenery throughout is spectacular.
This is a lovely route for those riders who don't want anything too technical; the routes that are readily available in books, magazines, youtube etc.
I've put together this ride and several others as I've found a distinct lack of detailed information on rideable off-road routes for those of us with mountain e-bikes (hardtail or full suspension) who want to enjoy a non-technical, but fun, ride.
The number of senior e-bike riders appears to be rapidly increasing and I'm hoping these routes will be useful to those visiting Cumbria and the Lake District and maybe even the local residents, like ourselves.
A basic map showing the route is available at the end of the video or you can view the route on Komoot at 'Cumbrian e-bike trails'.
