Easy gravel route (Green Trail) through Grizedale Forest followed by a more 'fun' bridleway

  • A 15.5 mile hardtail e-bike ride through Grizedale Forest, in the English Lake District National Park, along the Green Trail (fire roads) followed by a scenic descent to the shores of Coniston Water and a somewhat more challenging climb on a bridleway. A fabulous route with breath taking views for e-bikers who don't fancy the more technical, high level routes; the routes that are readily available in books, magazines, youTube etc.
This ride is 15.5 miles long but can be shortened. 95% off-road approx.
A basic map showing the route is available at the end of the video.
The video pays particular attention to the terrain to ensure potential riders can judge if the route is suitable for their level of riding ability. The bridleway up from Coniston Water is the trickiest section but this is easily avoided by continuing along the Green Trail to return to the start.
I've put together this ride and several others (work in progress) as I've found a distinct lack of detailed information on rideable off-road routes for those of us with mountain e-bikes (hardtail or full suspension) who want to enjoy an easier ride. I've spent considerable time walking bridleways to assess rideability as many are just not suitable for our needs or just overgrown!
The number of e-bike riders (especially seniors, like us) appears to be rapidly increasing and I'm hoping these routes will be useful to those visiting Cumbria and the Lake District and maybe even the local residents, like ourselves.

Nothing really flat immediately round Grizedale that I can think of but the lakeside path (not that far from Grizedale) from Windermere ferry north towards Wray Castle is a lovely level off-road path and it goes on towards Clappersgate (Ambleside) but that section has a few small hills . A couple of my routes cover these paths so you can check them out. If you are a visitor to Cumbria perhaps the Keswick railway (disused) track might be an option. I know its not Grizedale Forest but it is a lovely flat route.

Also thinking (adding on to ride down side of Windermere) you could ride cycle path from Wray Castle to Hawkshead (fairly level) and ride back to the ferry via the road to the west side of Esthwaite Water (close to Grizedale Forest) to make it a circular route.
