the scene where nick asked how she wanted him to boil the pasta, my first inclination was weaponized incompetence. then he says "i don't want to upset you" which made me think, he wasn't confident in how to do it the way she wants. if we go with the 2nd one, and if he's not confident in the kitchen it's because he lied about him knowing what to do. i think it's really sad that he doesn't help his parents in the household, which is obvious b/c he's just useless. smh. as for being treated like an equal... well, if he acted like an equal, she would treat him like that. he can't hang with an authentic human.

At your age I did not know all of this consciously but instinctually every time a boyfriend started talking about kids and marriage I would fill with dread and look for the exit because I didn't like the idea of the role of wife and mother for all the reasons you've said and now at 52 I'm happy with my choices but I have still been vulnerable to social judgement. Once a woman asked me if I was married with children and after I said no a "friend' piped in to say 'but she has cats'. I now know she was using the mad cat lady troupe to make me feel bad and at the time along with all the negative media representation of single women it worked. Now I understand that, that is just one the many forms of social control to try to prevent women from not centering their lives on men. My only regret is not realising this sooner because recognising it for what it is takes away its power.

Another thing I’ve been recommending lately is martial arts classes. Please take them, and if you have daughters, enroll them in classes, too, as young as they’re allowed. And keep taking them for at least five years, or whatever it takes to get a black belt, until those defensive responses are absolutely automatic. They could save your life in states that don’t allow pew pews. Men who attack women always do it because they know that women are smaller and weaker than them, so, we need to surprise them with the moves that will render those men a lot less powerful, or much, much worse for them. If the majority of women started getting training and being able to fight back, men will start realizing their power isn’t going to get them the control they are going for. So, look around at what different types of martial arts training is available in your area, and go to their studios and ask questions about the styles, why theirs is better than others, and what the ultimate goal of the skills are. If it’s solely for defense, as in allowing the attacker to walk away mostly unharmed, I don’t recommend those. I recommend the styles that will teach you to *finish* any encounter. Also, I don’t know if there are any women-owned and women-taught classes, but, if there are, I would definitely suggest those. Good luck out there ladies. Actually, *make* your own luck! ❤

I heard another good retort today: “Your loneliness, my choice.” Also, I’m recommending everywhere that women with daughters enroll them in martial arts classes, as early as the school accepts them, and keep them in there for at least several years, or at least until they get a black belt, so that the moves become automatic. Also, whether you have daughters or not, do the same for yourself! Look around at different schools for different styles, and pick your favorite, although I honestly recommend that you take a style that will finish your opponent rather that just “defending” yourself, unless it leaves him unconscious long enough for you to get far away, because these guys are out for blood. Surprise them by being the winner. Period.
