Welcome to my channel.
I’m a retired six sigma IT consultant, but don’t let that put you off, my family never understood what I did for a living so I don’t expect you to either - and I promise to not mention it again!
Like many people at working age my interests took a back seat and now I’m retired I’m free to explore them and learn the skills needed to be successful at them. This channel is about my journey and I’d love you to share it with me, either as a sage I can listen to and learn from through the comments or someone not so far along the road that I can pass what I’ve learnt onto.
I’m not sure how it will turn out but you are welcome to find out with me.

Thanks Simon, as you said, not a particularly scientific test but that is a surprising outcome, I'm intrigued to see your project video now !
Surface preparation is the key pardon the pun lol ,if you decide to re do the rest it would been interesting to see a weight test Interesting video Simon
Yes I agree, thanks for continuing to watch my videos :-)
is this how our ancestors did it too? 🤔 I wonder how old this technique is
Well they probably didn't have masking tape, but I'm with you, it's not a new technique, but was new to me :-) And was very happy with the results when I first used it. Thanks for watching.
Lock the door by turning left? In my opinion, locking the door should be by turning to the right ;)
Lol, they are actually really nice to use.
I would say Spot On!! Nothing wrong with your suggestion ... It worked!
Thanks 👍🏻 😊
Brother you’ve just recreated the problem a different way
It worked for me. Is there a better way?
Nice job
Thanks! Glad you liked it
The problem is lining up the two holes so they're concentric.
Exactly! Tf is this video
I guess it depends on the level of accuracy you are after and how much care you take, which admittedly I wasn't when I drilled the wrong one - I was tired- but it worked for my project, is there an easier way to fix this problem?
@@DIYTinkerer Actually, you can do everything you did in one step with hole saws. You embed the smaller hole saw inside the larger one with the center arbor holding them together. Just make sure the smaller hole saw sticks out further. For forstner bits, it's harder. You could create a wood plug of the same diameter as the small hole with a pilot hole in its center and plug it into the hole. The larger forstner uses the plug's center to drill concentrically. Just make sure the plug is somewhat flush with the surface.
Thanks for the suggestion Bob 😀
Thx for sharing and the tips
No problem! Glad you liked it
I got my Firefly fitestarter from Tortoise Gear (thanx, y'all) and they have both sizes regular SAK, and the little one. ONE NOTE: Firefly is very small. DO NOT strike it using the wider flat part. Only use the edge, otherwise can break. Instrux on pkg. T.G.tells you can use SAK saw spine because is true 90 degrees, which it needs to work, like any other. Fits in slot snugly, gives good spark. I actually need a few more for my other Victo SAKs. Great product. Dont break it !! Treat it fragile and works great. They also had the rod starter for corkscrew, but its not as long as the flat firefly it seems. I stuck with the Firefly in toothpick slot.. so glad to have fire onboard my SAKs..Oh, btw. Pull striker toward you, not away from you. Seems to work better. SAK folks will really like onboatd fire.
Thanks Simon, this was an interesting project, you got a great result from two doubtful component parts so that's excellent ! The timber didn't look promising for anything other than a naturalistic sculpture, but you managed to get some good usable bits out of it, strange design that knife, not really a full tang when it's got a massive void in the middle. I'm glad you reconsidered how to fill the void, that would be a challenge for anyone to make a tight fit all round, I thought you were going to print an insert to fit it ! It would have been nice to see you use it to cut something at the end, but no worries, as I said you did a great job ! Btw, surely you don't need a big knife like that for Pot Noodle or Beans on Toast ? 😉
Thanks, yes, I should have chopped some carrots and onions! thanks for the suggestion. Much to our surprise and joy, he has become pretty good in the kitchen!
Great vid, how are you £10.000 down out of interest?
I was surprised also when I added it up, there's a few big items, such as the Table saw, band saw, lathe, but also items such has video storage devices, laptop for video production, microphones etc. (I already had a camera) But just things like sandpaper, glue, hinges, really add up, I did a project the other day where all the wood was reused, but needed casters and spring latch bolts £60 later that video will net me about £1.20 ... Anyway, I get this is a hobby, and I get I could work in McDonald's for a week a year and earn more, and I also get my viewers don't get revenue from watching, but I guess I could do the MacDonalds job once a year, and double my woodwork, by not doing the videos. But I like doing the videos... I only really added it up to make sure I didn't owe the tax man anything. Boy, was I surprised !
Very nice Simon ,I'm sure your son will have fond memories when using it
Thanks 👍🏻
Excellent rescue turning an ordinary kitchen knife into a family heirloom. I hope your son appreciates the craftsmanship!
Thanks, he is a budding engineer and has made a few wacky Bass and electric guitars, so he does at least understand the effort to make things :-) thanks for watching
Well done. I especially like the way of working not to throw things away, which can be repaired otherwise. That‘s the charme of the woodworking tools in my humble opinion.
I agree, I'm forever finding uses for offcuts, if you didn't see my transformation of an old fence, then that is a great example of reuse. Check out my channel for it. Thanks for watching 😀
Nice work. Ive watched loads of that USA knife/sword making prog on TV. They always use epoxy to bond handle scales to knife tang. So you're bonding & sealing all wood surface to metal. Your current glue uponly bonds wood to wood. Water can still ingress between the tsng and degrade the handle
Thanks for the advice, I did use CA glue for the wood to metal bonds, but I'll consider using an epoxy next time 👍🏻 thanks for watching
Thx for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Clever
Thanks 👍🏻
Very good 👍🏻
Thank you! Cheers!
Great work, thank you. Similar mindset on working with wood.
Thanks for watching!
Nice one Simon, again, always good to learn new skills and the carving effort was great… 👍🏻 My guess was a Spork, but your ending soon spoiled that idea… 🙄 😜
Close! But no banana 😕 thanks for watching!
Liked and Sub'd, because you asked so nicely. Nice project and a good video.
Thanks, that's very kind of you! 👍🏻
Looks great!
Thanks! Was fun making too.
It also looks like it would be good for eating fish and chips, perhaps you should keep one in the car Simon ? 😉
Good idea!
I've always known it as a Widger,I can't see why that wouldn't last a life time if looked after

I really enjoyed this video which I enjoy all of the videos Great project Keep building

Hey everyone hit the like button and tell your friends
Thanks Simon that came out great, they're often referred to as a dibber but more accurately a transplanting tool !
Thanks, I thought the dibber was just the bulb planting tool, but a few people have suggested this
It's actually called a transplanting tool 👍
Thanks that makes sense
Thx for sharing
My pleasure
You're a god damn genius
I'll take that, LOL 😆
Good tip, thanks Simon !
No problem 👍glad you liked it thanks for watching
Or measure
It's easy to mess up measuring, this you'll never mess up
Thanks for the comment, I used to measure, but find this to be more reliable. You only have to be half a millimetre out and measuring fails ( in my experience) . 😀 !
That is certainly my experience, slightly blunt pencil, slightly off with the brad point bit, when drilling, but using the tape and a bradle you have to try hard to get it wrong! 😀
@@DIYTinkerer well if half a millimeter would mess it all up then you were doomed from the get go drilling holes free hand lol. It's a good tip. I'm not being that guy. Happy woodworking!
Bench dogs have a hinge system that has a companion that off sets the 20mm holes and might be your answer on your track saw problem. I’m using a Chinese nock off that is selling for $120 versus $207 plus shipping to the US. Bench dogs Uk is a great place to shop but shipping is expensive for us in the states. Plus I have their dogs that can sandwich two pieces together and extend my bench out. Have a good day and continue making tbhings
Thanks for the tip 😀
Looks good! What 3d design package are you using?
Hi, thanks for watching, I use onshape, it's feature rich (although I only scratch the surface) is free for makers, and runs in the browser, I have used sketchup in the past but it's not so good for 3D printing, and Tinkercad, which is a great place to start, but isn't parametric, which for the way I like to design is essential.
@DIYTinkerer Thanks, I've been struggling along with FreeCad. Slowly getting there, but it isn't easy!
@rakeng I tried freecad a while back and gave up, I was thinking of trying again now I'm OK with the concepts...
@DIYTinkerer I bought a kindle book to help, but ran into issues that it didn't deal with. I got more help on the basics from TH-cam. Good luck, I'm sure you'll manage! I've also been looking at Alibre, the one off cost isn't too bad, and it means I can use it without relying on a good internet connection, as I spend two months a year abroad with expensive broadband!

Thanks, I'm really happy with how it worked out, it's really nice to create something
Thanks for your time & info. I have been looking at this type of router lift for a bit of time but could not find a "real" info on the quality or functionality. I do have one question, what is the outside diameter of your router motor? Thx, Red
Hi Red, this is for a trim router, mine is a KATSU which is a rip off of a Makita trim router, it is ~65mm diameter
@@DIYTinkerer Thanks for the measurement.
Good job and project thx for sharing Cheers

Great save Simon , an inspired re-use of otherwise waste timber !
Thanks, Andy, glad you liked it!
Very cool!
Thanks, glad you liked it!
Excellent transformation Simon, great reuse of timber that many would dispose of… 👏🏻 ✅ How long would a project like that take you to complete all in?… 🤔 Nice gift for any gardener/allotment holder too… 👍🏻
Thanks for the lovely comment Venomator. It's quite a quick project from fence to Trug perhaps 4 hours of work, quite a bit longer with all the video recording. I specifically wanted to only use the wood from the fence, but if you had lumber for the handle and the sides then you wouldn't have any milling to do. Thanks for watching.
Nice job Simon, well done.
Thanks Steve, I'm glad you liked it :-)
I was three quarters through the video before I seen the Trug ,but it is 6.15am lol, nice job Simon
That's a bit early for me! Glad you liked it. 👍🏻
