    you should print the scales with hubert curve patterned bottom layers. Prusa slicer has it and it would look good polished

    That was a hell of a lot of work . Glad you are happy with result .,
    My MODs consist of grind the can opener and slightly mod the top to give a better can opner a small usable flat with clearance which also works great as Phillips. I also just grind off the ring as i find it just gets in the way .

    You can get a glossy pei mat for some printers and print the outside scale facing it for a smooth surface.
    Also I have designed a whistle scale and a ruler scale on printables, in case you ever feel like mixing it up as I do.

    Absolutely top work! I am tempted to have a go at modifying my own now. I did modify a Leatherman to give it features I wanted and weren't available, I think the Leathermans are a little easier to work no though as they don't have pins, you can unscrew them, no springs to worry about either.

    • @DIYTinkerer

      Thanks, I also have a Leatherman but haven't tried modifying it. I think the main issue is the SAK really isn't meant for taking apart, if you want the same number of layers, you have to buy new brass pins, I was lucky because I was making it smaller and had a few spares from the donar knives.

    • @caskwith

      @@DIYTinkerer I suppose if you could find the right diameter rod you could make your own pins. I have a SAK with the ALOX scales that someone made for me as gift, I think they made their own pins as they are simply rivetted over the scales.
      The leatherman is quite easy to take apart once you have the right screwdriver bit. Of course the limitation with the leatherman is that you cannot change the number of layers like you can with a SAK.

    That was a lot of work Simon, glad you got a good outcome after all that effort, definitely the right choice with the finish although I guess in some circumstances the texture might be a good thing !
    I think Victorinox are missing a trick here, they should offer a custom knife service I'm sure many people would pay a premium to get their own bespoke pocket knife !

    • @DIYTinkerer

      Yes I agree a custom service would be good, I guess they build the by robot and it is not worth the agrivation for them, thanks for watching 👀 🙂

    • @caskwith

      They sort of do offer a custom service. You can go into the Victorinox store in London and they can produce a knife for you, there are of course limitations compared to doing it at home but it is possible to get something more custom than off the shelf. You can also choose the scales and get the scales (and maybe blade) engraved with your name etc.
      It's not expensive either, the store it well worth a visit.

    • @DIYTinkerer

      @caskwith wow, I never knew that, I will have to look them up next time I'm in town. Although not as fun as doing it yourself 😉

    • @caskwith

      @@DIYTinkerer If you have the skills such as yourself then yes homebrew is certainly more fun, and you can get exactly what you want. I highly recommend a visit to the Victorinox store on Oxford street though, even if you are just going in for a browse like myself. The staff were all very friendly and helpful too.

    awesome mod, well done.
    I just don't understand the light solution.
    So you weren't happy how the original light kept switching on on its own and draining the battery, and you've fixed it by making it even easier to switch on on its own?

    • @DIYTinkerer

      Well not quite, but almost :-) My intention was always to get rid of the light to reduce the thickness. When I saw the LED scales I thought why not try, re the 'on button', it doesn't seem to come on in my pocket, unlike the original, and the batteries are 5 for £3 rather than about £15! To be honest the light is a bit of a gimmick- that said I have used it.

    • @procrasti86

      @@DIYTinkererSure. Any light is better than no light at all. I have carried one of those standalone coin "torches" which are essentially made out od a coin battery and an LED, with a tacky plastic frame. Not too bulky for a keychain. I did, with time, decide I'd rather rely on the ligh that comes with my phone for when I need it quick and not for long. If I need something for longer, there's a head torch always in my backpack.

    Could you use the pen as a tube to hold the firestick

    • @DIYTinkerer

      The pen and fisticuffs are the same size, so you can replace the pen with the fireside if you value it more than the pen , thanks for watching 😀
