  • I fix a design oversight on this entry level cabinet saw from Axminster, by modifying the bolt that holds the crown guard in place so that it can be used from the left or the right, its such a simple fix that it really should have been made like this from the start (IMHO).
Tables saw is the AC216TS now branded as the AW216TS, but this crown guard design is used on lots of table saws.

So, if you are thinking that Axminster supplies an auxiliary fence to 'overcome' this problem, then think again, the auxiliary fence is low enough to clear the handle, however the problem with this is that the handle still gets in the way of your push sticks/blocks, so the auxiliary fence doesn't actually solve the problem in most situations.

Without actually having one of these saws, I just wondered why a spacer or thick washer wouldn’t have worked. Am I missing something?

Hi thanks for the comment, the bolt isn't long enough for a spacer, it was also my first thought :-)

Nice fix Simon,no doubt Axminster don't do product testing before releasing into the market ,I imagine it will be a cost saving thing

I wish it was, but I really can't see how changing the design would increase cost, those bolts must be custom made, so making the slot wider or making the crown guard symmetrical would have solved it. I think it really is an oversight/ lack of product testing.

Nice one Simon. The Bosch gts 10xc has something similar but the bolt has a square section that will only fit on one side of the crown guard. I solved that by throwing the bolt away and using a furniture bolt from the opposite side. There is just enough friction to hold the bolt while tightening the bristol lever.

it is so silly, there are so many ways to fix this at design time - for instance the crown guard could have been made symmetrical - leaving it for users to fix shouldn't happen with these manufacturers.

Well done Simon, It's funny how we sometimes put off these type of little jobs, then wonder why we hadn't done them months or even years ago !
