Keeping Squirrels off of your Bird Feeder for $3.97
This video shares an inexpensive way to keep squirrels from getting to your bird feeder. The video shares a look at some bird feeders that have save guards built into the feeder that prevent squirrels from getting to the bird seed. The 3 feeders highlighted range from $54 to $124. Then Dave the Butterfly Guy recommends going to Walmart and buying a Slinky for $3.97. Dave goes on to demonstrate how to place the slinky on your shepherd's hook. He also shows how to place the slinky on a shepherd's hook that has two arms at the top. There is video of Cardinals eating at a birdfeeder as a squirrel watches from the ground. There are also shots of American Goldfinch and Downy Woodpeckers eating at a birdfeeder.

    I read about a fellow who planted a 1/4 acre of milkweed and had several hundred that he raised. The next year he grew 2 acres of milkweed. And they remembered and brought their friends. He had thousands. Tens of thousands. So much so that researchers could see the impact of his 2 acres on butterfly migrations in that one year alone. It has certainly given me an idea.

    • @davethebutterflyguy9841
      @davethebutterflyguy9841 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for sharing. I hadn't heard this story, yet I do believe that planting milkweed is the key to the monarchs survival. Every little bit helps!

    •  12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@davethebutterflyguy9841 Yes, absolutely. It also goes to show it doesn't take that much to make a big difference if just two acres seeded with milkweed is showing up in migration patterns. I bet there are a lot of farmers and land owners with fallow fields that would be happy to seed them with milkweed if they knew how beneficial it would be. 2 acres is nothing for a lot of these folks in the country. Or even parks departments and municipalities or corporate parks and college campuses. Everyone needs to chip in to save our pollinators.

    • @davethebutterflyguy9841
      @davethebutterflyguy9841 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for thinking about the butterflies. I made a video a few years ago about placing a butterfly feeder in my garden. The liquid in it is similar to a hummingbird feeder. However, I never see butterflies on the feeder except when I place rotting fruit on it. So, I don't think you will get butterflies with a hummingbird feeder, however, I do think if you place fruit out, such as oranges, bananas, berries, especially once they are getting a bit old and starting to rot, you will get butterflies. Here is a link to the butterfly feeder video. th-cam.com/video/09lZRSNYkKI/w-d-xo.html

    Those squirrels are tricky Dave. My husband puts Vaseline on the pole which helps. They've even jumped off the roof of my house onto the seed tray. My husband kept wondering how they were getting up the pole with all that Vaseline and he kept putting more until we see him jump one day. We had to move the pole further out from the house. Im gonna try your slinky method on another hook.

      They are tricky. We have tried greasing the pole and they still seemed to climb it. They are good jumpers so it doesn't surprise me they jumped from the roof. The slinky has worked for a few weeks now. I believe this is the magic way to keep them off the feeder.

    Hi, luv your info on Mourning Cloaks. I live in So. California and have 12 Mourning Cloaks chrysalis on my front porch beginning on June 10...seven have hatched and gone their merry way, and still have 5 hanging in various spots on porch. They are so beautiful, but I live in a city and find it extremely odd that these butterflies can survive here. Is this common for the Cloaks?

    • @davethebutterflyguy9841
      @davethebutterflyguy9841 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Wow, you have a Mourning Cloak nursery! To survive in the city, they need access to host plants like willows, elm, aspen and birch trees. As an adult butterfly they need access to food like rotting fruit, sap and nectar. I would think these food items are located in the city but it is surprising.

Plus the lizards and hornets seem to wipe out most of the caterpillars before they get half grown. A local park has giant milkweed, and a lady there gave me a slip to start my own plant. I’ve been taking caterpillars to the park so hey can survive.

      I started out using repellent, but we have had rain almost every day since the spring, so it was pointless.

    There are bunch of beard tongues in North America, I have 3 in my garden this year (all purple serralatus, rydbergii & ovatus), I'm in NW Oregon --- I don't get any butterflies visiting them sadly, bumble bees love them though, as do hoverflies and other native bees. They all supposedly like well drained positions but I have one, Penstemon ovatus that has tolerated clay really well this year. I've tried to grow red flowered varieties native to the southwest like Firecracker Penstemon (eatonii) but they've all died (after they were devoured by slugs 😢). But there is probably a Pentemon for every garden, you just need to find the one that works in your area!

      I don't thin so, but not positive. I think they may be Beardtongue Penstemon Grandiflorus Strictus Cobaea

    Can anyone help me with common diseases or issues with the giant milkweed? I have an issue with mine and I don’t know what to do. The only thing I’ve found online are other people with the same issue but no one has been able to say what it is.
