  • The Marigold Myth: Marigolds will keep rabbits out of your garden. Dave the Butterfly guy discusses what he Marigold has to offer. It's pungent smell does repel insects like Mosquitos, wasps, flies and ticks. Marigolds will also not be the favorite feeding choice of deer, raccoons or rabbits. However, Dave suggests that Marigolds alone will not prevent rabbits from eating plants in your garden. Dave is using Marigolds as part of a 3 step approach to keep rabbits out of his garden:
    1) Plant a marigold border
    2) Use fencing to protect your most valued plants ( Liatris, Phlox, Sedums, Asters)
    3) Use a live trap to catch rabbits
There is also short video clips of how monarch butterflies love Meadow Blazing Star, or also know as Meadow Liatris.

Your pest is Rabbits and mine is a skunk. He doesn't eat my plants but he's constantly digging wherever there is fresh dirt looking for crubs. I planted out my tomatoes and next day he had them all uprooted! I had to replant most of them the next day. Then i planted some squash seeds. Next day he dug them up.I think now hes just climbing over my fence as i cant see any spot where hes dug underneath of it sometimes . I'm gonna have to put a plastic container over my seeds until they sprout now. And the chipmunks and squirrels just love to dig out my dirt and bury things in my flower pots uprooting my flowers. Its a constant battle. Good luck Dave! Always look forward to your videos!

Sounds like you have your hands full with the critters! You may want to scatter some marigolds near some of your favorites? Good Luck!

Marigolds are also a good companion plant for many garden vegetables. Marigolds help abate harmful tomato nematodes when planted next to them, for example.

Liquid fence works great for rabbits. I’ve have had some of my natives desimated by rabbits after liquid fence I haven’t had one issue

I have also used Liquid Fence in the past. It also worked for me. However, I felt anytime it rained I needed to stay on top of respraying.

I started out using repellent, but we have had rain almost every day since the spring, so it was pointless.

Rabbits chew threw plastic. My large front garden has turned into the baby Bunny nursery. So it's getting a chicken wire fence this fall. I grow everything myself and I hate watching my babies get eaten.

I agree with you. I need chicken wire for my fencing. The rabbits eat thru plastic so quickly.

Down here in South Florida, we hear that marigolds repel snakes. But the downside is that snakes get rid of the rats which we have with local construction. Oh well!
I can live with the rabbits . It’s the iguanas that do even more damage!
