  • This video highlights planting Meadow Blazing Star (Liatris Ligulistylis) to attract Monarch butterflies to your butterfly garden. The Meadow Blazing Star seedlings were ordered online from Morning Sky Greenery located in Morris, MN. Dave the Butterfly Guy demonstrates planting these Liatris seedlings into his garden along side seedlings grown from Blazing Star seeds that were cold stratified this past winter. Blazing Star is a spectacular butterfly attractor and the Meadow Blazing Star is the ultimate Monarch Magnet. There are also photos and a short video of monarchs on the Meadow Blazing Star.

I see very few monarch butterflies in my area here in Idaho. I do have a lot of hornets though. Have a very blessed day you and your family 🙏❤️🤗🐈🐾🐕🐾

It has been hot and dry in MN this year. Not very good for monarchs. I have seen a few but not many. Thank you for your kind words, Have a wonderful week!

I live in south-west England and didn’t know about Laiatris Spicata, so thank you. I saw one today in the garden centre and recognised it from watching your video, I would not have known if not for you.
I bought the plant and have ordered more. I’m making a butterfly garden. Your information was very useful, cheers.

Having this liatris along with mexican sunflowers has been working like magic to attract monarchs for me in Ohio.

Cheryl, I need to get Mexican sunflowers. I have Heliopsis but I believe it is a different species. I am excited you had a good summer with monarchs.

Hi Dave. Loved this video and what you're doing for the Monarchs! I ordered about 6 Liatris Ligulistylis bulbs this fall. I recently planted some Liatris Aspera and the fuzzy white and purple ones (not sure of the name). I planted the bulbs near a few different varieties of milkweed. I'm trying really hard to get the Monarch's attention even though we live in cold Michigan. Wish me luck. Thanks for what you're doing for all the butterflies! God bless.

Fantastic! Monarchs are amazing at finding host plants and pollinating flowers. Good luck with your bulbs! I appreciate you watching the videos!

Your property is beautiful. The Liatrus will make a lovely addition!
I live in California (I can really relate to smelling smoke). I hope the Monarchs will come to my Liatris the way yours did.

I have several liatris but none in bloom yet here in Bellevue NE. I have seen several monarch cats on my swamp milkweed, all fell prey to birds or other enemy so I recently took 4 cats inside and raising them.

Hopefully your liatris will bloom in July! I also have taken in 4 monarch caterpillars over the past couple of weeks. 2 are already chrysalis, 1 is in a J-hook and one is fat and eating a lot of milkweed. I hope to release the monarch butterflies in a couple of weeks.

@@davethebutterflyguy9841 hi Dave!! All liatris are blooming. I have released two monarchs (male and female) and have one in a chrysalis hope to release in a few days. How did yours do??

Hi Dave; I finally found you again. I don't know if you remember me. My name is Roger and I live in Idaho. I planted Layatris about three years ago. They did great but they were the white variety. I can't find this variety anywhere. Mine had several purple ones sprout the second year but I haven't had any since. This year they haven't done as well. It has been brutal on all of my plants this year because of the scorching, ongoing heat. They finally bloomed but they didn't get very tall and there were several that never came back up this summer. When you mentioned the smoke and heat it hit home. We have had so many fires in the west that you can barely breathe some days. I hope you find this and that you are doing good. Thanks for posting what you do. 👍

Thanks for your message. This year has been so much wetter and milder in the upper midwest. My Liatris is back and finally healthy. I am super excited about year two of my Meadow Liatris, it is just ready to bloom for the first time. I have monarchs hanging on it already. Take care and good luck with your garden!

@@davethebutterflyguy9841 We have had just the opposite weather pattern. we have broken so many records I can't keep up with them and it has been like living in hell trying to keep my gardens alive. I'm glad you have had cool wet weather. We aren't used to the weather we have had here this summer and the smoke from all the fires in the west is thick when you go outside.

Georgia, There are lots of kinds of liatris, but this Meadow Blazing Star is magnificent at attracting monarchs! The first year may not bloom much, but by year 2 they should provide a lot of nectaring flowers for butterflies and hummingbirds! Thanks for watching the videos!

Just love liatris in the garden. Monarchs don't come to my area here in N.Y until August. Smoke was so bad here one day they warned us not to go outside without N95 mask. This is gonna go on all summer news said depending on the wind shifts.

    • @davethebutterflyguy9841

Nora, I hope you end up with lot's of butterflies later this summer. The smoke and air is crazy. I saw some of the news reports from N.Y. it looked terrible. Hopefully the worst is behind us. I am optimistic your liatris will flourish in July!

The Monarchs have been sparse in MN so far this year. Butterfly Bush and Purple Coneflowers are great for attracting Butterflies. I am excited to be heading to the U. P. of Michigan in July!

What type of soil do you have I have clay and I heard meadow blazing star doesn’t appreciate it but the Liatris punctata I have tolerates it well.

    • @davethebutterflyguy9841

I also have clay. I am hoping in year 2 this summer the Meadow Blazing star takes off. My Liatris punctata star does do well. I did put down about 4-6 inches of black top soil down. Thanks for the comment!
