  • This video highlights the Black Swallowtail and has clips of caterpillars that are just starting out in October. These young caterpillars are trying to survive for 3-4 weeks so they can turn into a chrysalis. Once a chrysalis they are able to overwinter and become a butterfly in the spring. See the host plant, Rue. Also the New England Aster is highlighted. This flower is a magnificent late season bloomer. Will these small Black Swallowtail Butterfly caterpillars make the transformations into beautiful, majestic butterflies?

Fall color you show almost makes me miss Midwest. In FL, just got 1st black swallowtails on parsley. Stayed 8 days in chrysalis. Let them go.

Excited to hear you have swallowtails on your parsley! It is beautiful hear now with the trees changing, however, the frost is just around the corner. I am not looking forward to that.

I’ve got three black swallowtail chrysalis that are going to overwinter here in Nebraska. They formed a chrysalis about 3 weeks ago

That is fabulous, I hope they make it! I am not confident mine will make it through the hard freeze we are suppose to get over the next few days.
