  • Is is not too cold to start planning your butterfly garden! This video shows how to cold stratify seeds so they will have success sprouting in the Spring. Native plants to northern climates have developed over years. The seeds of these plants need to go through a freezing process so they will come to life when the weather warms. Dave the Butterfly uses Meadow Blazing Star (Liatris LIgulistylis) seeds in his video. The Meadow Blazing Star is an amazing flower that attracts all kinds of butterflies and hummingbirds.

I learned something new about "cold stratification" - who knew you could plant seeds and then put them outside during a Minnesota winter!

Oh my gosh Dave was wondering what you've been doing. I just started some parsley and dill inside for the black swallow tall butterflys that I raise. My milkweed I have some in the refrigerator being cold stratified and the others i planted outside in a milk jug. Did you ever hear of winter sowing?

Nora, nice to hear from you, Nice job getting your black swallowtail plants started. I think winter sowing and cold stratification are similar in that the seeds need to spend time time outside experiencing freezing temps, snow, etc. I think in both cases moisture and cold temps play a key role to help the seeds germinate. Keep up the great work!

Everything i’ve read or seen on youtube says cold stratification is done 4-6 before last frost. Depending n your zone, of course

Meadow Liatrus is the best! I got my seeds from my sister-in-law. However, many nurseries sell the seeds. I am attaching a link to a nursery I have used before. They will mail you the seeds. Good luck!
