- This video shares an inexpensive way to keep squirrels from getting to your bird feeder. The video shares a look at some bird feeders that have save guards built into the feeder that prevent squirrels from getting to the bird seed. The 3 feeders highlighted range from $54 to $124. Then Dave the Butterfly Guy recommends going to Walmart and buying a Slinky for $3.97. Dave goes on to demonstrate how to place the slinky on your shepherd's hook. He also shows how to place the slinky on a shepherd's hook that has two arms at the top. There is video of Cardinals eating at a birdfeeder as a squirrel watches from the ground. There are also shots of American Goldfinch and Downy Woodpeckers eating at a birdfeeder.
Thank you, Dave. This was very informative. I’m going to try it on my feeders.
Glad it was helpful! Best of Luck!
Im definitely gonna give this a shot...thanks Dave!! 👍
Your welcome, good luck!
Thanks worth a shot 👍🏻
Those squirrels are tricky Dave. My husband puts Vaseline on the pole which helps. They've even jumped off the roof of my house onto the seed tray. My husband kept wondering how they were getting up the pole with all that Vaseline and he kept putting more until we see him jump one day. We had to move the pole further out from the house. Im gonna try your slinky method on another hook.
They are tricky. We have tried greasing the pole and they still seemed to climb it. They are good jumpers so it doesn't surprise me they jumped from the roof. The slinky has worked for a few weeks now. I believe this is the magic way to keep them off the feeder.
Got. 0ne. And. It works. Love it. Ty. For sharing
Excellent!
Thats a great idea thanks. I have one of those squirrel busters & it was crazy expensive (but it does work) but they always get to my suit still. Have to specifically look for the hot pepper suite which they don't like. Not now i am going to use a slinky :).
Squirrels are very clever, however, this is still working for me. Good Luck!
Thanks for letting me know that.
Your welcome! Good luck!
This works at first but then smart guys learned how to get a running start and jump from the ground up to the bird feeder in one ninja jump!
Squirrels are crafty buggers!
Would a plastic one work as well?
I think the metal works best. Squirrels could eat through the plastic. However, it may work for a while until the crafty squirrels figure out to do with it. Thanks for watching!

Slinky absolutely do not work on your pole. I have them the squirrels still managed to get in to the feeder.
Sorry to hear your squirrels get around the slinky. So far this summer my squirrels haven't figured out how to get around the slinky. Good luck!
