Love seeing what butterflies you have and what flowers they love. You inspired me last year to plant more host plants and it’s really paying off this year! Thanks for the new video🦋

Great job Dave, awesome garden. Where did you buy that fence. Rabbits drive me crazy!

I bought it at the home improvement store Menards. Although it was easy to install, the fencing is made of cloth so the rabbits can eat thru it. They have done this twice in two years which isn't bad. Otherwise it has kept the pesky rabbits out.

Your gardens are beautiful. Always look foward to your videos. I dont know whats going on this year. Im in N.Y and last year i raised so many Black Swallowtails and this year ive only seen 2 and no eggs. My flowers and host plants are thriving from all the summer rain but no butterflies. Ive seen a few Monarchs but we usually get more at the end of August.

Nora, Thanks for the comments. We are in the same boat on these Black Swallowtails. Where are they this year? Hopefully they show up in August!

If you shear the catmint back, you might get a second flush of blooms.

Is it too late to create a butterfly garden in the St. Louis area??? Its August 11. I have recently decided that I would love to have one, but I don't want to waste my time if its too late to do it this year. I am having a hard time finding a definite answer to this question.
    Thank you for your help!

It is a bit late. Although you could plant perennials like Asters and Sedums that will bloom this year and then come back next year. Annuals will be short lived, so I would stick to perennials and some host plants that will come back, like butterfly weed.

Do you have any tips for growing Agastache? I am on the west coast and the only native west coast species that I can get is Agastache urticifolia, which I tried to plant multiple times from transplants this year and it died both times. About how warm does it have to be outside for them to survive? I think maybe the nursery I bought them from didn't have them hardened off. I have a couple of babies now that finally sprouted from seed outside that I am trying to keep alive, I hope I get some growth on them before the fall.

My first couple of years with this plant was milder heat and plenty of rain and the Agastache flourished. The past 3 years have been hot and dry and I have lost several of these plants. I have replanted and have 9 this summer. Unfortunately, they are not as full as previous years. I think some partial sun in hot climates helps and keeping them watered heavy once a week vs a little bit frequently. You want the roots to go deep! Good Luck!

Is there a reason for having the flowers planted beside tall grass?

    • @davethebutterflyguy9841

No, when I moved to this property there was about an acre of wild grasses, golden rod and other plants like thistle. Each year I dig up additional space and add to my garden. I wish I could just work with a prairie restoration outfit to help reseed the whole acre.
