As someone who lives in Stockholm, in an apartment from 2013, I LOVE the architectural features and existing colours since my place is white and completely boxy xD Considering Robert Kime and Rita Konig, would it be possible to turn the couch so its facing the fireplace? And the two armchairs then flanking the fireplace? I saw a project where Rita put a small desk behind the couch which invited people to sit down there as well to work on their laptop, write postcards etc. Another thing that stuck out to me is the lovely red, small patterned chair behind you, my fingers were itching to throw that yellow, large-patterened cushion on it for a lovely and very English mix of colours and patterns. Regarding the black fireplace, I saw Caroline Winkler covered hers with some pretty peel-and-stick and that did such a difference for something that might be "black hole" or eyesore.

Have you thought about using two small kitchen cabinets to make a tiny L shaped bench? Then use one of the chairs. It would keep your walls from getting beat up. Plus, visually it wouldn’t look so full and cluttered without the tall chairs taking so much space up.

I love your pantry. A good tip is to put small pieces of trim on the back of your shelf wall and sit the spices on them. Another idea is to put a box with very shallow shelves on the wall so you can line your spices up to easily see them. I’ve tried many strategies for spices, and if you can’t see them all the time, in an organized way, they always get out of control.

I love your kitchen and all your beautiful pieces. On the subject of color, what I’m seeing is that it is never a good idea to mix muted and clear colors. If your walls were a clear color they would be more harmonious with your bright, clear furnishings and curtains. Sherwin Williams would be able to help you choose a color. Maybe Calypso, Surfin, Fountain, Skyfall or Flyaway? Take your color cues from the Van Gogh. You see that he was consistent with his use of clear colors. Don’t let anyone tell you that you have to go muted or it will be too bright. If you love color, go with it! (A nice, bright, not too creamy white would also work). You could also go lighter on the colors I named, but you chose a more saturated color the first time and like it, so you might want to stick with that. One more thing: if you do paint your walls, paint the cord to the light fixture over the sink the same color. It will blend in. Thank you for being unique!

I love unfitted kitchens. When I remodeled my kitchen four years ago I unfitted my kitchen dining area and I have absolutely no regrets. My husband and I Diy’d the majority of it and everything else we bought in thrift stores. I didn’t hide my appliances and they’re stainless steel as well . What I did to tie them in was surround them in vintage furniture and decor example behind my stove I place a vintage mirror, my fridge a vintage basket on it with old rolling pins. I played around with the positioning of the furniture and I found the perfect place for everything. I really believe in going with your heart and surrounding yourself with things you love.

I’m not really a gardener either but I do enjoy puttering in it. I was fortunate to purchase not a house and cottage with fairly established gardens. For the first few years at each I was quite deferential to the previous owners’ choices. As I’ve gained a bit more knowledge I’m now at the point I’m ready to make some larger changes - taking out larger plants/bushes to replace with ones I like better. I’ve found both a hyper local and regional Facebook gardening groups to be very helpful. Also, you probably listen to the Homemaker Chic podcast, but if not they just did a few helpful episodes about cottage gardening. I look forward to seeing how your grows, and the anticipated changing for the dining room.

I am no landscaper. Just like you I tend to focus on my interiors. The yucca plants are great anchor plant for the ends of your porch. They have great structure for the winter months as well. I think the garden club would be a great resource. Most gardeners love to share start of plants. Your neighbors and friends probably have lots of hardy perennial. Two things I have learned is: Plant in threes and vary texture of the foliage. Really these are design formulas that work inside or out. Looking forward to seeing your garden grow.

I am not the best gardner - the running family joke is if you have a plant you no longer want, give it to me. Our summers in southern NJ are hot and humid. We try to keep to plants that can tolerate and thrive (almost) independantly. Hostas are my absolute favorite. They have different varieties of leaves. They flower! They come back year after year. They can be divided. The ones we have are originally from my grandmother and grandfather's Pa home, at least 35 years old now. They've been divided and my daughter now has these same hostas in her home.

I joined a garden club in my area with a lot of wise older farm women but there are some younger ladies too, one of them is an actual flower farmer growing fields of all types of peonies. I live in the upper Midwest so our garden season is very short. These ladies know what works in this area, are very knowledgeable and are generous with sharing perennial plants that they need to divide. We have monthly meetings through the entire year, dues are a whopping $2.00 for the year 😉 Members take turns hosting and can decide where r to meet - church basements, members homes, coffee shops, etc. We always have a “business” meeting, a long and short topic topic concerning gardening, games with prizes, “a little lunch” and a secret pal exchange (I chose this year not to participate in the secret pal because I tend to be more minimalist in my lifestyle). I am probably the last person to consider myself a gardener but they still let me participate. 😊 I have learned that gardening is work and that patience and persistence pay off. I have also learned that it brings a lot of joy and a feeling of accomplishment at the end of the day!

So i am cleaning kitchen cabinets. They have a nice finish. But, the cabinets above the stove are greasy. I know how hard it is to get old grease off pots. You have to use oven cleaner and heat. I am afraid that will kill the finish on these cabinets. Also this grease isn't burnt on. So what to use. Dawn will work fine on most of the cabinets. But those around the cabinet. Arg. One thing i know, those microwave vent fans are not sufficient if you do any amount of cooking. Any suggestions?

    • @OldWorldFarmHouse

hi, I would try tsp. test it in an inconspicuous place to make sure it doesn't hurt the finish first. the vent fan ... that is a toughie. I would get a real vent to the outside if it's possible. the micro ones are not powerful enough for sure.

I now look back at pictures from years ago and think, I looked so young and pretty, why was I so hard on myself! I don't want to get to the end of my life and feel badly how hard I was on myself. I also agree with you about loving what clothing you buy regardless of the price. When I first discovered 2nd hand shopping I went crazy over the great labels and finds. I had to reign this in. I tell myself if it's not an "oh yes!!" it is a no for me. I need to leave it so it can be an "oh yes!!" for someone else.

Such a timely video! I am hosting my daughter's baby shower for 40 next weekend. She wants a ladies' garden party. I love hosting, and we do alot throughout the year, but mostly groups of 10 or less. I have to admit when it gets to be the last few days before having a party or dinner, I get so stressed. I'd love to get to the point in life that I don't anymore. I have tried and true recipes I stick with for entertaining and use the "help" of mixing in pre-made along with homemade. I try to remember that I always love being invited to someone's event and never mind what they're serving or how fancy/informal it is and I'm sure people feel the same for my events. They're happy to be included. It hasn't helped with the stress, but I'm working on it!

I don't know how to not be stressed; I want everyone to enjoy themselves and things to run smoothly. I do like hosting dinner parties for 1-2 couples plus us. That I can relax and enjoy.

I really enjoyed this video and learned so much. You inspire me! ❤ I enjoy hosting, but my husband and I don't do it very often. I don't feel very good at it, probably because I don't give myself much practice and I'm an introvert. Thank you for sharing your prep with us!

I LOVE this so much!! I did not attend finishing school. I’m not sure it was in our area as a teen. I was a child of the 80s! I came from a large family and have a large family. A holiday can easily reach 40 with just my girls, the older daughters their spouses, grandchildren. I’m involved with the women’s ministry at church and enjoy feeding the masses! Preparation is KEY! With 7 daughters, hosting has been something we have taught them to do. They can all host beautifully and enjoy hosting together. When the older girls were at home, we hosted themed parties. It started with homeschool curriculum and literature. When we completed, we would host the themed party. Ive collected so many different and interchangeable things that one daughter and I are thinking of hosting and opening it to homeschool groups in our area. All of that to say, your advice is so helpful! Even after all I host, greeting my guests as you recommend is my new addition! Your home is so lovely! Your event sounds perfect!! You are a treasure to your friends, I’m sure!! Keep it up! Our society needs things like this! We can definitely learn from each other.

Is it time for us all to go back to finishing school? In today's video, I am exploring what it takes to enjoy entertaining, and what we could learn from the past! What do you think of finishing school? Did you attend?

I am intimidated by shopping second hand on line. This video is great! I am going to try shopping using this method.

These are great tips! It never occurred to me to use the word dupe - brilliant! I'd like to suggest going into the higher end stores (I'm thinking Anthropologie because I went there yesterday with my daughter) to become familiar with their labels. I'd been in a 2nd hand store that morning then met my daughter for lunch and a browse in a few stores we don't often get to. I realized I'd seen Anthro dresses that morning in the 2nd hand shop but didn't know they were $300 retail!!! If I'd known they were such expensive dresses, I'd have at least taken a closer look!
