  • We're having a party next week and I've been thinking (again!) about how to maximize the seating in my living room. I got a great idea from the best decorating book I've read in a long time. I can't wait to show you what it is!

    You did a good job ,a suggestion be to turn that mid century chair a tad so it’s not looking straight on .Alsoi think the rocker looks out of place by the coffee table also it’s blocking the view of that lovely comfy chair .Im from England now live in Florida ,I was very confused with decor when I first came over .I liked a bit of every style.by now I think I’ve got to where I’m satisfied with how my decor turned out .I like carved furniture so found a hutch at a yard sale ,I also found a little cabinet in a similar style only years later found out it’s French Provincial .We have our dining room sort of in that style ,our living room is English /American with leather couch,Oriental rug and rustic elements .x

    Just thinking about the scale of the different chairs and wonder if......you could do some swapping :) I would suggest moving the rocker to spot the chintz ikea chair is sitting. Not only would the height match the settee, but who doesn't love a rocking chair by the fire :) You should also gain some floor space with the "rockers" in corner and not in the middle of the room. I would pull the mid century to the space the rocker left and add the chintz ikea chair the the right of the fireplace. Having shorter chairs opposite the sofa will open up the sight line to the settee grouping. One final thought. You may be able to find an oval coffee table. I think it would make navigating the room easier.

    The rocker and other chair across from the long couch will be helpful during the party, but gives the atmosphere a very crowded feeling. I know you are enjoying moving furniture around.

      I think she has definitely achieved what the designer suggested! It's just the mismatched style of the rocker, and the light colored armchair is a little off to my eye. If they were a pair of light colored armchairs, that would be perfect! But it's definitely a Chester Jones style!😊😊😊

    I love this way of arranging furniture into conversational groups. Floating furniture off the wall so that it’s layered with other pieces thus creating intentional “pockets” to meander around always feels very designer to me.

    I think you are achieving exactly what you are hoping to, cozy and comfortable, but still with such style! My home lends itself to English country style also, and I am enjoying thrifting items to achieve it over time.

    In a basic apartment, unfortunately, there really is no focal point to speak of. I guess the larger window that looks out to the street would be the focal point. So I flanked it with bookcases and drapes. But, this is where the tv is as well. (I hate seeing the tv first thing as I walk in.) The other large wall is where the couch is, and I have one club chair that gets moved around because it's really more then anything... in the way. Lol.
    I really think you executed the design of Chester Jones perfectly!!🎉🎉❤❤❤

      I found a really pretty fabric and put it over the TV. Kind of like a dust cover but it keeps it from being this giant black hole in the room. No big deal to pull it off when we want to watch but it makes it feel so much more calm to me when we aren’t watching.

    • @lydzphens
      @lydzphens 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @wendyduncan9084 humm! I've often thought about what I could cover or hide the tv with but could never come up with something convenient to slide, move, or pull easily out of the way. But a fabric cover is a clever idea. Tkx!

    • @lydzphens
      @lydzphens 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @OldWorldFarmHouse yes it is! But I think the real problem is that apartments are mostly too small and built without style in mind. Basically, it's a box with a door on three of its walls, and if you're lucky enough to get a large window on the last wall to allow light to come in.

    Id take away the wood chair from the fireplace, the chintz chair and the grey one. Keep rocker beside the fireplace and add a lovely desk with a wood chair. The chintz chair is very low unless you add new legs, unless you need seating for so many i would thin it out and bring chairs in when needed. You dont want it to look like a waiting room. Lol. Check out some british movies and youtube videos, great country home ideas. Its a gorgeous room and cant wait to see the new curtains. Love your channel.

    You have such beautiful architecture. It very much lends itself to English or Irish country. I prefer French and Scandi country but our house is 1970 with a sunken living room. Very groovy. Very friendly. Our furniture is a mixture of antique, thrift, and family pieces. I think the direction this house is taking us is kind of artsy country. Some painted furniture to lighten the wood walls, cozy blankets, and soft spring colors. After the party could you do a quick video that includes a bird’s eye view of the room and furniture and tell us how people actually used the room? I feel like the rocker would draw me to curl up in one of the window nooks and relax. Do you not use the more prominent door?

      it's so interesting how one's house sort of tells you what to do isn't it! that is a great idea for a video and I will try! thank you!

    Really enjoy your channel and you are lovely! You absolutely have to change those curtains though! You need something lighter, thicker and more full. It will really elevate things and bring some cohesion because you have so many different patterns and disparate elements. The room is pretty but there’s just too much going on. I would re- cover several pieces in the same or complimentary fabric and then bring in that fabric in pillows or a lampshade. I love the English aesthetic but the room is so big that things don’t feel balanced or cohesive. Changing the curtains will really help. I would also paint the mantle one color that complimented the fabric of the curtains. I don’t mean matchy matchy just less busy. This is all just my humble opinion. I prefer your style to so many of the other more “professional” type design channels which tend to all do the exact same things - Etsy prints in gold frames, stoneware and baskets, green walls etc. You’re really developing a thoughtful design style based on classic principles not trends. It’s great! Good luck ❤️

      thanks for your thoughtful comments! love it! I should have explained in this video that this room is not done or finished in any way - the paint and paper are what was here when we moved in, and the curtains are just a stopgap measure. furniture is not a planned group of any kind but what we have got at the moment. I totally agree with what you are saying here. I need to remember to add a disclaimer when I do videos in here😂 This room will probably get "Designed' last bc there are more urgent matters in this fixer upper of ours.

      I hear you! I love watching your rooms evolve in an authentic way, rather than the fake-curated-collected thing that a lot of other TH-camrs are doing where they thrift etc but still are looking for all the same things and then arranging them in all the same ways, which really isn't much better than buying everything from one store in one shot! So I totally get what you're doing, it's great. You're so authentic and are sort of just taking us on your journey while sharing what you're learning along the way. "Linsey's recycled Bliss" kind of does this too, nothing is perfect but it's attainable and real-life but aspires to something. In my house I'm always "upgrading" I have an antique shop so I buy stuff and then replace what I've got and then sell what I've moved on from. This takes years and years, and I always say I have the shop to support my habit! We can make our homes lovely and full of personality while it's on it's way to where we want it! Thanks so much for what you do, please feel encouraged, you're a joy to watch! Ok that said, girl take down those curtains! Get some drop-sheets from Amazon or Lowes...lol
